Can you believe it?! Nathan Fillion is the lead in a television series that made it to a second season!

Castle, the new hit ABC series is moving full steam ahead into its second season and it looks like it just might have a bright future.

I don’t get it. Everyone who watches Fillion on screen immediately falls in love with the guy and the characters he plays, yet he’s had two shows in a row canceled on him early. Join us as we look back at some key moments in Fillion’s career and talk about his recent successes…

Although, he made a name for himself with Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place alongside Ryan Reynolds, Nathan Fillion’s cult following began with Joss Whedon’s Firefly, which was incredible, but was unfairly treated by Fox and thereby canceled only a fraction into its first season. Fan support managed to bring a great feature film (Serenity) to theaters but it didn’t bank well at the box office.

Next, Fillion played a part in the final 5 episodes of Whedon’s Buffy series which also soon ended. Then, he starred in a show called Drive which lasted approximately one night before it got the axe. I don’t feel too bad about that one though.

After a stint on Desperate Housewives and his role as Captain Hammer in the internet phenomenon that is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, the Canadian actor finally has a steady gig in a lead TV role.

His latest show is called Castle and if you’ve not watched it, you should. He plays the title character, Richard Castle, a cocky, humorous and lovable New York writer who specializes in writing murder mysteries. The show is about him using is connections with everyone who matters in New York (including the Mayor) to force the department (whose entire staff also loves him) into a partnership with Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), an officer who happens to be an obsessed fan of his work.

While entirely reluctant to work with Castle, she has no choice and must allow him to tag along to write stories based on their adventures (he loves it when they get called to horrible crime scenes). The show follows Fillion’s character and Beckett as they solve the crimes of the city and while Fillion writes novels about a character based on her. They have their ups and downs as their relationship continues to develop and the viewers get to watch their great interaction on screen.

The show is funny, well-written and full of heart. The best example of the latter is when we get to see Castle at home with his daughter and mother. They represent three extremes that make the perfect family and their relationship and interaction is a treat to watch. The comedy bits of the show only work because its Fillion and I can’t picture the series working with anyone else in the role – he’s made for this part.

The best part about the series however, is that it’s successful! The first season of Castle had great ratings which warranted season 2′s creation (it premiered last week) and it continues to stand strong in the ratings where it dominated Jay Leno this week with its second episode.

The following is a snippet from the ABC press release yesterday:

“Castle” (10:02-11:00 p.m.)

Producing its strongest “DWTS” retention ever, ABC’s “Castle” topped NBC’s “Jay Leno” by 3.7 million viewers (9.2 million vs. 5.5 million) and by 29% in Adults 18-49 (2.2/6 vs. 1.7/4).

  • “Castle” was up from its week ago season premiere in Women 18-34 (2.1/6 vs. 2.0/6) and Women 18-49 (3.2/9 vs. 3.1/8).

My hopes are that this show lasts long-term and that it helps build Fillion’s profile for more roles in feature films. He sure deserves it.

For those who don’t know, Fillion’s also been active in the video gaming industry where he’s voiced a few characters in games such as Jade Empire and Halo 3. More recently, he’s not only voiced, but he’s the model for the main character in Halo 3: ODST which just hit shelves last week for the X-Box 360. For the Firefly fans out there, joining Fillion are Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk who also voice characters in the game.

What do you think of Castle and are you a fan of Nathan Fillion?

  1. I love Castle. The show is great! Castle and Beckett are great playing off each other.

  2. Thank you for an article that speaks true about Nathan Fillion standing strong. He is amazing and I admit that I literally hold the hope in my heart that he succeeds beautifully in everything he does in his career. He truly deserves it. Go, Nathan!!!

  3. I was on the fence about getting ODST – then I found out that Capt Reynolds, Jayne, Wash, and #6 were going to be in it. That pretty much sold me.

The fact that it’s a great game too is merely a bonus :)

  4. well I have been touting it in the OD threads, it’s good to see him land in a series with good writing that is actually backed by a network

  5. excellent actor and excellent cast and AND great writing. dude deserves this.

  6. I have never even heard of this show.

  7. I Love Castle.
Glad to hear its doing well.

  8. From what I heard of Castle Season one, it barely survived.
However, I am grateful that ABC renewed it. I find it great and anticipate every new episode. However, I am in the minority. I am a viewer from a country that dosen’t matter.

  9. > I don’t get it. Everyone who watches Fillion on screen immediately falls in love with the guy and the characters he plays, yet he’s had two shows in a row canceled on him early

Me neither. I’m a purely hetero guy, and *I* can see why women would love him. He’s got both the down-home, not too prissy, earthy kind of guy, yet he’s cool and classy at the same time.

    > Then, he starred in a show called Drive which lasted approximately one night before it got the axe. I don’t feel too bad about that one though.

Two nights, actually, three eps. And you should, it was a fantastic concept — The Amazing Race crossed with Lost, created by the same people who helped Whedon bring you his great stuff. It looked to be interesting, intelligent, *and* entertaining. It joins Wonderfalls, Love Monkey, and Day Break as the worst F-ups the network programmers have made in the last 5-odd years.

  10. Whoo hoo! I’m so happy!!!!

  11. Bloody hell, Rob. “the internet phenomenon that is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”, “Firefly, which was incredible”.

Get your tongue out of Joss Whedon’s backside.

  12. I love the show. Can’t get enough of Fillion.

Not unlike O Bloody Hell, I’m hetero and I’ve got a pretty serious man crush on this guy (Fillion, not Hell).

I hope this show continues for a long while. Fillion deserves it.

  13. @kosta

What is your problem? Dr. Horrible was a HUGE hit (enough so that it was included in a bit at the EMMYS), and Firefly was an awesome show with such a strong following that despite having been canceled after only two seasons ended up with a feature film (which was awesome as well).

So you need to relax and watch it with the rude comments.

  14. I love Castle but then I’m a big flan of Nathan’s – yes flan… a browncoat through and through.

  15. I admit it, I’m a huge fan of his work!! I’ve seen everything I believe he’s been in, with the exception of regularly watching the soap he was in (not a soap fan). From everything you read about him he’s genuinely a nice person, you don’t see him in the tabloids constantly, he keeps his private life private, he’s an awesome actor….and distractingly charming. I really wish this man the best. Castle is one of the best shows on tv right now, I’m so glad ABC saw fit to renew it. I watched the whole first season and couldn’t believe it was actually on the fence…would have been a shame to lose it.

  16. @ O Bloody Hell,

I disagree, lol. Drive was very bad. Despite a neat idea, every character was difficult to watch other than Fillion’s. And for some reason, they didn’t reveal his true character till AFTER the 2-hour premiere.

  17. @ kosta,

If Dr. Horrible isn’t an internet phenomenon, what is? It won an emmy and is helping kickstart the push internet media – it was incredibly successful, earned a massive fanbase AND critical praise.

    And you didn’t like Firefly?

ps. I’m not a big dollhouse fan and I didn’t watch Buffy… show a decency and thought, dude.

  18. Great show, get everyone to watch it. Great chemistry between the leads, and everyone on the show. Just a fun, fun show.

  19. Don’t think Castle is a sure thing, the ratings aren’t looking so great – but encouraging people to watch via Hulu (as well as when the episodes air of course) and giving the ABC feedback will make a difference.

Details on where to write/call here (it’s also really easy to do with the info provided)

  20. The writing is very fair, the direction is okay. Fillion is good, but not good enough to take sometimes-cheesy scripts whose dialogue is hit or miss to the next level. Compared to a lot of crap on TV, this show is certainly better than the average, but it falls far short of stuff like Firefly.

  21. Castle is one of the better shows out there right now but you also have to look at some of the crappy shows it’s competing with that shouldn’t even be on the air. As for Firefly, it had some of the most unique writing and dialogue in the history of television. Plus it had an extremely underrated cast. But it seems that imagination and being unique are not what the heads of studios want these days.

  22. well that might even be said to be true as far as audiences go, look at the ratings, people want to watch Idol, survivor or dancing with the stars (Not my style, but then again, I can be picky about my choice of brain candy, tyvm). Although it does appear that Castle is kicking the crap out of Leno so far, and while it’s not The Wire or Mad Men, it’s not trying to be either.

  23. Me encanta la serie , y los actores la actuacion de fillion es fresca y bien desarrollada, todos los personajes me encantan, ojala aqui en venezuela llegue pronto la tercera temporada.Saludos. y Dios los bendiga
