At one point, doing voice-over work for cartoons and animated films in Hollywood was considered to be below the standards of many big name stars and “serious” actors. That hasn’t been the case for a while as in recent years, not only have studios realized that attaching a well-known name to a animated character is a great way to draw attention to their product, but actors too have realized that voice-over work is a pretty comfy way to make an large paycheck.

Warner Bros. announced today they are producing Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, a direct-to-video animated film to complement their upcoming summer tentpole, Green Lantern. Also announced was the stellar list of actors and actresses who will lend their voices to the film.

After the excellent fan-made Nathan Fillion trailer for Green Lantern went viral a couple of years ago, fanboys were hoping Fillion would eventually play the part of Hal Jordan in the live-action adaptation. Now their hopes have turned to reality – just not in the way they originally thought. Fillion’s voice should be familiar to fans of the animated DC Universe as he also voices Steve Trevor in the animated Wonder Woman.

The Green Lantern: Emerald Knights cast list:

  • Nathan Fillion – Hal Jordan
  • Elisabeth Moss – Arisia
  • Jason Issacs – Sinestro
  • Arnold Vosloo – Abin Sur
  • Kelly Hu – Laira
  • “Rowdy” Roddy Piper – Bolphunga
  • Wade Williams – Deegan
  • Henry Rollins – Kilowog
  • Michael Jackson – Ganthlet

Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) voices the young recruit Arisia who is forced into her first mission on just her third day as a Green Lantern. The rest of the list is filled with familiar names and the ones that stand out to me are Jason Issacs (Harry Potter), Henry Rollins (Sons of Anarchy) and 80s wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

Issacs is solid in just about everything he does and Rollins has a big following in both music, poetry and acting, so hearing them as the voices of Sinestro and Kilowog should be amazing.  Most people will remember Piper from the cult 80s film They Live and his famous line, “I’ve come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum!”

Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths), Jay Oliva (Doctor Strange) and Christopher Berkley (Transformers: Animated) are all teaming up to director Green Lantern: Emerald Knights while Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One) will be producing.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights comes to home video June 7th, 2011.

  1. Michael Jackson as Ganthlet?? Is there another MJ I’m not aware of?

  2. This would’ve been perfect for the live action version. Fillion for Hal, and Issacs for Sinestro sounds like a win to me.

  3. yeah i saw mj and i was all like wtf O_O HEEEEEEEEEEEEEHEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  4. If Only the live action could of looked this good. Nathan Fillion is a great chocie for Hal and a much much better fit than Ryan Reynolds who should of been The Flash or Kyle Reiner.

  5. Is it bad that I still think that fanmade trailer from last year is more exciting than the actual official trailer? The only thing the official one has over it is better looking alien GL’s like Kilowog and Tomar-Re.

    • You are 100% correct that fan made trailer put the actual trailer to shame. It was really good and really did the job it was supposed to. The actual trailer was embarrassing to me as a long time GL fan. For the next few years adult every where will only associate GL with little children and kid friendly humor. No one will think that GL is an adult relate able super hero because of this film.

  6. I still think the live action film will surprise a lot of people.

    • I agree with you DSB, I have high hopes for the GL movie, and to me the Trailer looks great

      till next time

      • nice avatar Keno, use to love the ROM comics, still have a few

  7. Oh come on I like Hal but can we give the the other Earth GL’s a chance, we already have “First Flight” now this, then the movie and then the animated series.

    • B-Flash I have no problem with using Hal. Honestly it’s for a reason. He’s the most loved and respected of the GL’s. Honestly the only two I have any interest in seeing are Hal and John Stewart. I hate Guy Gardner I think he’s the worst GL and possibly worst comic character in DC. I also have a strong dislike for Kyle.

Everyone has their fave GL and most hated GL. It’s just a safe move for DC to go with the most loved and least hated GL rather than take a risk on the others. If it’s not Hal it would probably be John because he’s the most recognizable of the GL’s to the mainstream because of the JLU cartoon. We have a much smaller chance of seeing Kyle (thank goodness) and it’s next to impossible that you’ll ever see Guy Gardner as the main focus of any GL feature unless it’s just a short attached to one of these films.

  8. Not a big Nathan Fillion fan but I will enjoy listening to Arnold Vosloo as Abin Sur.
