Naomi Watts Is Marilyn Monroe

Published 4 years ago by , Updated June 27th, 2013 at 3:11 pm,

A promotional image at Cannes Film Festival presents actress Naomi Watts doing her best Marilyn Monroe. But this is no tabloid photo. Watts is in costume and makeup as she prepares to portray Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming biopic Blonde.

Based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same title, the story follows Monroe’s highly publicized life, including relationships with John F. Kennedy and Joe DiMaggio.

This is one way to pick up the buzz for a film not set for production until January of 2011. But did you really need convincing that Watts would pull off the look of Monroe? She is a gorgeous blonde and just as charismatic as Monroe. More importantly, she has proven an ability to deliver a performance directly from the unforgettable era of the mid-20th century.

Although Peter Jackson’s King Kong was set in 1933, Monroe’s popularity was not far behind. It is tough to truly pinpoint another actress so perfectly suited to sing “Happy Birthday” to the President.

Marilyn Monroe is a relatively untapped resource in entertainment. There are plenty of fascinating storylines from her life to focus on and explore in the film. And frankly, there are not enough films for leading ladies to shine as the main character.

But the Weinstein Company has their own plans to put Michelle Williams in the iconic role. The Williams-led My Week With Marilyn begins filming in September and tackles the actress’ time on the set of the film The Prince and the Showgirl.

  1. Is Naomi Watts eating a lot of cake to look the part..? She should. Don’t get me wrong — I really like her BUT she’s like half-a-Marilyn

  2. I like Naomi Watts, but not sure if she fits this part.

  3. Marilyn was 28 when she married DiMaggio. Naomi is 42.
Michelle Williams is closer in age, likeness, and body type.

Neither woman has the charisma of Marilyn
who probably was the most charismatic
    woman ever in Hollywood history.

  4. If Rob Keyes can write on Screen Rant, then Naomi Watts can play Marilyn.

  5. Naomi looks sexy but i dont think she can play Monroe unless its spot on.

  6. Why don’t they hire one of the ‘crazies’ that dress up as Marliyn and walk Hollywood Blvd. for money … that would be one of those movies with the ‘I can’t look away’ accident scene fell do it… much like Marliyn’s real life.

  7. Naomi Watts is too attractive to play Marilyn Monroe.

    Not that I’m complaining!

  8. Watts has the beauty and acting ability but Monroe was voluptuous while Watts is athletic. I would rather see an actress with Watts acting ability but with the body of one of those Monroe look-a-likes.

  9. Watts too thin & too old, Monroe was thick, shapely voluptuous and extremely sexy so much so that she’s still the number sex scandal of all time and nobody really complained. Clinton on the other hand uh,not so much, maybe if he had an affair with a Monroe type chic then maybe people would’ve sort of left him alone.

  10. I love Naomi Watts.

    • Lol

  11. I love her as an actress but I really think they should have looked for someone a lot curvier than Naomi Watts. :P

  12. 我爱娜奥米沃茨 我是她的中国粉丝
    I love naomi watts

  13. Hey Guys,
Come-on, give her a chance. She is a good actress and I believe she will do justice to her role as Marilyn Monroe.

  14. i love naomi watts
i’m your chinese fan 哈哈哈哈 我爱娜奥米沃茨

  15. Look at it this way. Naomi is already gorgeous and an amazing actress with the ability to play this complex part. If she eats some cake, she’ll fit it to a tee.

As far as the age difference, who cares? They’ve got good lighting, etc. Plus she has a youthful look.

Who do want? Some bubble-head like Kate Hudson or Scarlet Johnason playing this part? They don’t have a lick of Naomi’s talent!

    • First of al I just have to say this. Marilyn Monroe was NOT fat! The biggest she was was a size 4 and that was when she was pregnant during the film Some Like It Hot. Just because she had hips and breast does not, will not, annd she was definitely not fat. Its actresses like Kiera Knightl who suffer from eating disorders and look like waifs that have altered everyone’s perception of fat and thin and it is definitely sad.

  16. I’m a huge fan of marilyn monroe! Don’t think Naomi Watts is right for the part though, I think they should get Suzie Kennedy, a marilyn impersonator she’s gorgeous just like marilyn.. That would be the best bet to use an impersonator! Hopefully will be a brilliant film.

    • Susan Griffiths would be better. Almost a deadringer.

  17. Marilyn had a heavy set overlapped eyelids like Madonna, if they could give her prosthetic heavy set of eyelids and if she could do her high pitched breathy sexy sultry voice then, Naomi could probably do the role justice. Until then, no she doesn’t possess marliyn’s heavy set overlapped eyelids, which sometimes were exposed in her films and photo’s. If they could fix that problem with her then I might pay to go and watch this.

  18. Naom is hot like Marilyn and will do well. She has it. Not only in beauty, I mean it all. Unlike poor Marilyn.

Too bad Marilyn has to be betrayed as a JFK speculation. What took JFK was a Power Move not a sex scandal. So much conspracy theory of fact and none of this sex conspiracy ever proven. Except by Frank Sanatra and the Rat Pack. Believe what you want from a guy who carried his brains some where else than in his head.

    • Poor Marilyn is an incorrect statement. Marilyn studied with Lee Strasberg and was part of the Actors’ Studio. Marilyn was one of the first women to have her own production companies, which produced two of her movies: Prince and the Showgirl and Bus Stop. If you believe she was just a dumb blonde then she just proved to you how great of an actress she was as the majority of the roles were that…aka Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How To Marry a Millionaire, etc. She was well read and a perefectionist. She came from nothing and became the most famous woman of all time and forever. Guess uses her imagery still today in fact their last campaign was of her in Bus Stop. When beauty and hollywood glamour comes up she is the first go to image. Yes she made mistakes. Yes there are conspiracies concerning her and the Kennedys. You must take consideration at what the time was when she became famous. How things were actually ran in hollywood. It was a time where the mafia ran rappid. The casting couch existed and alot of actresses at the time par-took of this to get where they got. Marilyn did it on her own and her own terms. Never denying anything that she has done. Always owning up to her mistakes. Thats one reason people liked her and still do today. She was beautiful, feminine and honest.

  19. How come no one asked Charlize Theron to do the movie? If there’s an actress that could knock this role out of the park, looks alot like marilyn, and has the curves to pull it off is Charlize. ALTHOUGH: I have to say that Michelle Williams did knock it out of the park in My Week With Marilyn. She did not necesarily look like her but there were instances of pure honesty and you almost believed she was her. It was the first time anyone has ever portrayed Marilyn as a real person and not 2-dimmensional or what most actresses who played her go to charater; Loralie Lee from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Also didn’t Poppy Montgomery already do Blonde? Why the re-make? Why doesn’t anyone do Marilyn’s own biography My Story that was writtend by her?

  20. Have you all forgotten King Kong? She was spot on Marilyn in that movie, I thought they must have done it on purpose, but I have recently seen video of Marilyn that looks just like Naomi Watts, “Marilyn without makeup signs autographs” on youtube.com look it up as well as her last photoshoots. She lost weight in ’62 and was thinner and looked a lot like Naomi, so be kind and rewind.
