While we Jim Henson fans wait and wait for Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller’s The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time to be made, at least we have the occasional Muppet Studios music video to help us through.
In the past we’ve seen amazing covers of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Dust in the Wind” and “Habanera” from the opera Carmen. And now we have an Easter treat to add to previous holiday-themed Muppet renditions of “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Carol of the Bells.” This latest video features the monster Big Mean Carl appropriately wearing bunny ears and singing that Easter favorite, “Stand by Me.”
Well, it’s going to be a traditional Easter tune for me from now on. The Ben E. King classic, which became famous again with the film of the same name, has little to do with the Christian holy day – though I guess you could really stretch things and imagine the lyrics are directed at Jesus (calling him “darlin'” would be a little weird, though).
Instead, the song was apparently picked in order for Carl to lure in little bunnies as his musical collaborators. And dinner. Check it out:
Oh, I should have pointed out that those of you who don’t like to watch Fatal Attraction or Watership Down because you can’t stand the killing of rabbits may want to skip this. Of course, the bunnies do continue the song from inside Carl’s stomach, so maybe they’re not quite dead? Despite being clobbered with a giant carrot?
Hopefully the kids aren’t too frightened by this. There is already enough nightmare-inducing, Easter-related content from Critters 2: The Main Course, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill! and, most famously, The Passion of the Christ.
As a critic, my favorite thing about these Muppet Studios videos is how they end – with Statler and Waldorf offering their ornery opinions about what we and they have just watched. Man, do I wish they were still reviewing movie trailers and cynically prejudging new releases at Movies.com.
