Disney successfully (re-)introduced the late Jim Henson's Muppets to the big screen back in 2011, so it should come as little surprise to learn that a sequel will arrive next year. The followup, which is titled Muppets Most Wanted, will include a handful of new human puppets... er, players - including comedic television stars Ricky Gervais (The Office (UK)), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Ty Burrell (Modern Family) - in a movie co-written by Nicholas Stoller and director James Bobin: two-thirds of the team responsible for the previous Muppets flick (minus the co-screenwriter and male human lead, Jason Segel).

Watch the Muppets Most Wanted teaser trailer above (the preview will be attached to Disney's Planes in theaters this weekend), then check out the official synopsis:

['Muppets Most Wanted'] takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe's most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World's Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais.

As is to be expected, the Muppets Most Wanted teaser doesn't really dive into the film's plot - or touch upon the similarities between this movie and The Great Muppet Caper (released back in 1981). Rather, the footage is composed of primarily what many younger and older audience members expect/want to see in a Muppet flick: irreverent Muppet comedy and knowingly-hammy performances from the humans - who tend to act as in a staight-man (or straight-woman) capacity, behave like Muppets in human form - or a combination of the two (see Tim Curry in Muppet Treasure Island, for a great example of the latter).

Scott and penguins in the Muppets Most Wanted trailer

On a final note: in case you're a Muppets fan who prefers it when the characters perform original musical numbers, as opposed to riffing on popular songs (see: Scooter and the penguins' rendition of "Moves Like Jagger"): Muppets Most Wanted will also feature new songs written by Bret McKenzie, the Flight of the Conchords alum who secured an Oscar for his "Man or Muppet" tune from the last Muppets installment. Good news, right?
