It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights, it’s time to get things started on the …. sequel to Disney’s 2011 reboot of The Muppets, as The Muppets… Again! kicks off its filming schedule with the old familiar faces reconvening for a road trip adventure across Europe.
The Muppets… Again! has been filming on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles this week, and L.A. resident Jon Klaft snapped a photo of the shoot in progress, showing that the production is recreating the final scene from the end of the last movie, with Gary (Jason Segel), Mary (Amy Adams), Walter, Kermit and Miss Piggy taking their final bows after the Muppet Telethon.
Luckily, they’ve also got a blue screen, which means that they don’t have to reassemble thousands of extras and try to remember what order they were all standing in.
Now, don’t get too excited. Though The Muppets reboot was more or less Jason Segel’s baby, the actor has already confirmed that he won’t be returning for the sequel, since his goal was to bring the Muppets back rather than become a permanent fixture in the line-up.
It’s unlikely that we’ll see Amy Adams again either, since Segel’s departure strongly suggests that Gary and Mary’s role in the Muppets’ story is complete (for now at least). Judging by the set photo, the “Gary and Mary” posing with the Muppets are almost certainly stand-ins rather than the original actors.
Ann Pantaleon also tweeted some photos from the shoot. Check them out below:
While there’s no major revelation to be had in these set photos, they do tell us something interesting about the set-up for The Muppets… Again! Apparently, the sequel will pick up mere seconds after the end of the last film (though before the events depicted in the credits). Producer David Hoberman has said that, in terms of plot, The Muppets… Again! will bear a number of parallels to classic ’80s Muppet movie, The Great Muppet Caper, with a story that culminates in all the Muppets returning to London.
It’s only a small snippet of information while we wait for the film’s spring 2014 release, but it does create a great opportunity for theaters to set up back-to-back screenings – or, when The Muppets… Again! is out on DVD, for fans to splice together the two movies at the transition point and create a Muppet Megamovie.
