Serving as the launch of the all new Universal Monster Movie UniverseThe Mummy stars Tom Cruise in an all new take on the classic supernatural horror/adventure property that has its origins in the 1932 film of the same name, starring the late Boris Karloff. In a concerted bid to give the likes of Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures a run for their money, Universal is all set to deliver its own connected movie universe fit to rival the likes of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe.

Following the release of the first full-length trailer for The Mummy, a steady stream of information has been forthcoming from longtime Hollywood producer Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness), who is directing the movie based on a script co-written by Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange). Things are certainly looking up for those involved in the making of the rebooted Universal Monster Movie Universe, and the latest featurette for the first brick in the wall has just been released online.

In the footage featured above, distributor Universal Pictures teases potential viewers with another alluring glimpse at all of the mystery and intrigue soon to come from The Mummy, while taking plenty of time to explain some of the backstory that will be put into play in order to set about establishing subsequent installments in the franchise. Cruise and co-star Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond) – who will be portraying the titular movie monster – are both on hand to talk about how Kurtzman intends to bring the old school Universal Monster movies of the early-20th century back in a big way.

Based on all of the footage shown thus far (including a glimpse at a fight scene between Cruise and Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll), Kurtzman and company appear to have something that could be truly epic in scale on their hands in the production of The Mummy. If everything goes according to plan, then fans of the classic movie monsters that will soon come together to assemble the rebooted Universal Monster Movie Universe, have a lot to look forward to over the course of the next few years.

At the same time, some of Cruise’s unbridled enthusiasm for the project rings a little hyperbolic, and the special effects put on display don’t really seem all that far removed from your average action blockbuster. Only time will tell how The Mummy and the rest of the Universal Monster Movie Universe will go about setting itself apart from the likes of other big-budget franchises – but here’s to hoping for the very best, in the meantime.
