Teen Wolf Renewed for Season 3 MTV Renews ‘Teen Wolf’; Season 3 Will Have 24 Episodes

After a strong first and second season, MTV’s hit supernatural drama Teen Wolf claws its way into a third season. The network not only announced the show’s renewal this week at Comic-Con – but also that the series episode count has been doubled to include 24 episodes, instead of the 12 they had for the previous two seasons.

Loosely based on the ’80s film of the same name, Teen Wolf centers on recently-turned teen werewolf Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), who is learning to cope with his newfound power while trying to maintain a normal life.

This season, Scott’s life was made even more problematic as he had to not only avoid  his girlfriend Allison’s (Crystal Reed) werewolf hunting family – but a new lizard-like shapeshifting enemy known as a “Kanima,” revealed to be his high school rival Jackson Whittmore ( Colton Haynes). Scott had to make the difficult decision to join current Alpha-wolf Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) to help Jackson before Allison’s family could put him down for good.

Teen Wolf currently airs on Mondays nights at 10/9c and draws in an average of 1.8 million total viewers each week. The series also has consistently dominated its timeslot in the 12-34 demographic, since the series premiere last year. MTV’s head of programming, David Janollari, had this to say in a press statement:

“Teen Wolf represents a terrific foray into the scripted world for the millennial MTV audience, and marks tremendous success in the continued diversification of our schedule. Renewing the show for a third season celebrates the creative vision of Executive Producer Jeff Davis and the remarkable talent of the cast who bring this bona fide fan favorite to life.”

The season 3 pick-up of Teen Wolf is undoubtedly great news for fans of the series – but the plan to extend the show may not be the best thing for a scripted show on MTV, which has always been more in the reality TV business. As a show that doesn’t feature the “Freak of the Week” format other similar shows like Smallville, or Supernatural follow, the season-long villains and storylines of Teen Wolf may be at risk of becoming overly drawn out, or could lose some of the less committed viewers.

Teen Wolf Renewed for Season 3 Kanima MTV Renews ‘Teen Wolf’; Season 3 Will Have 24 EpisodesJackson in his “Kanima” form

As of late, MTV has put a greater focus on scripted programming – with the renewal of freshman comedy Awkward and the launching of two new comedies The Inbetweeners (premieres Monday, Aug. 20 at 10:30), and Underemployed, which will premiere this fall. Teen Wolf season 3 will mark the highest episode count the network has ever given to a scripted series to date.

  1. What a great show, I was totally taken by surprise when I watched it. It’s really hitting it’s stride this season. As for season three, producer and writer Jeff Davis has already confirmed via Twitter that the show will keep it’s twelve episode arcs, and season three will effectively be split in two to avoid filler episodes. Such a great move on their behalf, so the show won’t get drawn out.

    • We get it, bro.

      • oh man, now I look a little too enthusiastic. My phone wasn’t posting the comments, whoops.

        • lol i was wondering why you kept posting the same thing over and over

    • wonder if Jackson will be on the second half of season 3

  4. It already gets drawn out with 12 eps. So far all the same storylines rolled over from season 1. Even “new” characters turn out to be old ones from season 1, just in a different form. They better step it up with something fresh.

  5. Jeff Davis has stated that even though it is going to be 24 episodes they will be using 12 episode arcs

  6. Sooooooooo happy it got renewed, love this show a lot. I thought season 1 was good but season 2 just got even better. I also think the cast are amazing!

  7. This show is differant show and the cast are fantastic usealley acting is quite bad in these shows but its not in teen wolf… as far as the storyline goes its getting better and better more creatures, the characters are developing well and i fell this show could go on for at least 4-5 seasons if it keeps up this momentum.

and i dont fell it already drawn out as one guy said you cant have everyone dying and the world about to end in every single episode that just makes bad tv it would become the same old you need to have a bit of pace but still a storyline or it would just be a movie…

i also really like how the mythology is becoming more involved i think that t works great when used in syfy

  8. The only thing this series shares with the 80s film is the name, nothing more. To say it is “loosely based” on the movie just isn’t true.

  9. All I wanna know is how much are they gonna make us wait till they air the 3rd season. I can’t handle wait till next summer.

  10. I think it’s a great idea to bring more episodes me and my kids love the show and are sad this season is coming to an end so soon I hope it runs for more seasons after 3 love the cast ESP stiles gr8 work to all the teen wolf crew! N

  11. I LOVE TEEN WOLF SO MUCH. I hope Derek gets a love interest in the next season, someone his own age. Not erica. But anyways that would be really cool and maybe stiles could have one too or just stay with lydia or erica. anyways i love this show so much its SO GREAT AND YES IM A BIG FAN

    • LYDIA

  12. Personally, I LOVE the Teen Wolf series and I hate when the seasons come to an end! We watch it every week and it’s always so thrilling! However, Awkward, is not as great. There are so many other shows that are based around “normal” teenage life and high school in today’s society. I think that Teen Wolf takes the “normal” teenage lifestyle of today’s generation and throws a crazy, edge of your seat si-fi twist into it. This makes it fresh, fun, and so gripping you want to watch it every week. 24 episodes would be great! I feel like the season actually ends too quick ! It’s no sooner getting started again and beginning to fulfill anticipations before it ends. As much I don’t want this season to be over, I can NOT wait to see what season 3 has in store!

  13. I love this show, I got all my best friends hooked to it and I guess you can say we are obsessed. I’m up every Monday night at 10, watching teen wolf. I think its awesome they are going to double the episodes. I have purchased the season 1 dvd and I am going to purchase season 2 as well as season 3 when it comes out. I hope they dont make us wait till next summer for season 3 cuz that would be rediculous. If they insist on making us wait, they should make us wait till Halloween and release season 3 then.

  14. i got hooked before even watching it when i saw a sterek video on youtube..than after several more I just had to watch it. I finished season one in just one day.

  15. omg wat will happen to jackson x

  16. I really love this series movie, its awesome , i never missed an episode. I am looking forward for season 3. Yea the cast really are doing a great job on keeping their viewers…… I LOVE TEEN WOLF yeahhhhh :-)

  17. Im so excited about season 3!!!

  18. So wats Lydia’s power?!??

    • So far she is a supernatural antidote I guess. Cause the Kanimas paralyzation poison doesn’t work on her. And she can’t be turned into a werewolf.

  19. Hope season 3 starts sooner I luv teen wolf big fan
