What is thought to be awards season came to a close this year with the 87th Annual Academy Awards ceremony last month. Although the Oscars saw their own set of surprises, nominations for the awards were – for the most part – largely predictable. But once again, films focused on superheroes, comic book, Young Adult novel adaptations, and popular comedy were noticably absent from this year’s Oscars.

However, these types of films (among others) do receive recognition from the MTV Movie Awards in categories such as Best Fight, Best Kiss, and of course Best WTF Moment. With the Oscars behind us, the next major award show to pay recognition to Hollywood is the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, set to be hosted by Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) on April 12, 2015.

MTV announced the nominees for this year’s awards today, with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Neighbors, and The Fault in Our Stars leading the pack with seven nominations each. As further proof that a handful of films laid claim to the hearts of the mainstream, talent like Channing Tatum (22 Jump Street, Foxcatcher), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars), Emma Stone (Birdman, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), and Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) received multiple nominations.

A majority of the MTV Movie Award nominees are from the big blockbusters of 2014, though more dramatic films like Whiplash also received nods. As discussed in a recent episode of the Screen Rant Underground podcast, there is a disconnect between the films that received recognition from the Academy and those that the average moviegoer saw in theaters last year. This disconnect is especially evident in the MTV Movie Award nominations, which recognize both Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Zac Efron’s shirtless performance in Neighbors.

Typically, it’s the Oscars which have been viewed as the awards show most likely to honor the films and performances which astounded despite exposure to large audiences, OR managed to break into popular culture. But this year, a larger-than-usual number of Oscar-nominated films seemed to fall short of a wide release – no doubt contributing to the lowest-rated Oscars broadcast in years. Add a hosting job from Neil Patrick Harris that received mixed reviews, and suddenly, an awards show featuring movies and stars that pleased mass audiences – hosted by one of the most up-and-coming comedic talents in Amy Schumer – seems to be just what the doctor ordered.

Will you be tuning in to the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, and if so, what films do you hope to see get their time in the spotlight? Sound off in the comments.

The 2015 MTV Movie Awards will air April 12th @8PM ET on MTV.
