Things aren’t looking so good in the trailer for Mr. Robot season 3. USA’s critically-acclaimed drama enters its third season this fall and fans have finally been given a little tease of what to expect when the show returns. There is also now an official date for the new season’s premiere.

Very few details have been released about the upcoming season of Mr. Robot so far. Season 2 saw Elliot (Rami Malek) dealing with emotional trauma and “trying to place boundaries” on his relationship with Mr. Robot (Christian Slater). It also ended with a crazy cliffhanger that left Elliot’s fate uncertain – and led to even more questions about Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom) and Angela Moss’ (Portia Doubleday) roles in Mr. Robot’s plans.

The trailer for season 3 hints that something dark is coming. It’s set to the lyrics of Leonard Cohen’s “Democracy”, which fits with eerie perfection. The trailer features the familiar faces of Elliott, Angela, Darlene (Carly Chaikin), Dominique DiPierro (Grace Gummer), and Whiterose (B.D. Wong) as well as newcomer Irving (Bobby Cannavale) flanked by members of the Dark Army. According to TV Guide, eagle eyed Redditors unlocked this teaser trailer after following the clues posted on the official Mr. Robot Twitter page, which replaced some of Cohen’s song lyrics with numbers.

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail told Maleck the theme of season 3 would be “disintegration.” This carries over to the trailer, with images of violence and slum towns throughout the city. There is an uneasy tone, a feeling of a storm brewing under the surface. The whole city seems to be falling apart, not just Elliot.

However, Elliot’s mental state will also come into play, as he recovers from his gunshot wound and deals with the demon that is Mr. Robot once more. After the events of season 2, Elliot will be trying to reclaim his life – as he continues to figure out who he can really trust.

Fans are hoping the third season of Mr. Robot can return to the success of season 1. The first season was met with near-universal praise while the show’s second season was longer and more convoluted. Many people grew frustrated with the increasingly complex storylines and plot twists. Esmil is returning once more to direct all episodes of the third season. This helps the show maintain its heightened style throughout the series, but won’t ease the fears of anyone worried that the show’s creator is stretching himself too thin.
