As the second installment of the growing DCEU, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is also the foundation of the Justice league, which will soon be featured in another movie. Actor Henry Cavill reprises his role as Superman, also known as Clark Kent and Kal-El. Actor Ben Affleck takes on the Batman suit to play Batman and Bruce Wayne. Actress Gal Gadot also makes her first appearance as Wonder Woman and her alter ego Diana Prince.

Director Zach Snyder heads the production of the movie along with writers Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer. Also included in the cast are actresses Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch and Tao Okamoto as Mercy Graves. Actors also include Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Scott McNairy as Wallace Keefe, Callan Mulvey as Anatoli Knyazev and Robin Atkin Downes as Doomsday.

When plans for DCEU expansion progressed, the film was introduced not as a sequel but as a separate movie that will serve as the backdoor for other movies such as Wonder Woman and Justice League. The movie was released March 25, 2016 in the United States.

Suicide Squad (2016)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action

In Suicide Squad, a government agency recruits some of the deadliest villains in DC Comics lore to embark on dangerous missions.

The 2016 movie features the ensemble of antiheroes commissioned by a secret
government agency to save the world from a supernatural ancient threat. David Ayer both wrote and directed the movie.

The Suicide Squad team is made up of villains, captured and kept in a secret prison, offered reduced sentences if they participate in dangerous missions. In the tradition of continuity within DCEU films, the event comes in the wake of Superman’s death and the seclusion of Batman after the events that occurred in Batman V Superman.

Agency head Amanda Waller, played by award-winning actress Viola Davis, is the one striking deals with the inmates of Belle Reve Prison. Heading “Task Force X” is Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag, alongside actor Will Smith’s Deadshot, actress Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, actor Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, actor Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo, actor Adewale Akinnuoye’s Killer Croc, and Adam Beach’s Slipknot. Actress Karen Fukuhara’s Katana also joins the mission to keep Rick safe from the villains. Actor Jared Leto’s Joker also appears, as does Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress.

Actor Ben Affleck’s Batman also appears briefly in the closing credits of the film as a teaser to DCEU’s upcoming Justice League.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

This third Captain America film adapts the “Civil War” storyline from Marvel Comics, and sees Steve Rogers and Tony Stark at an impasse over who governs super heroes and how. Captain America: Civil War pits two teams of Avengers against one another and introduces new superheroes Black Panther and Spider-Man.

The divide between the two perceived leaders of the Avengers caused the other members to choose sides. It all started when the UN decided to take control of the superheroes’ involvement in fighting crimes. Steve disagreed with the UN’s proposal while Tony supported the decision. Things turn for the worst when Steve’s friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier, becomes the prime suspect in a terrorist bombing.

On Iron Man’s side are Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) joined their side and Tony recruited Spider-Man (Tom Holland). On Captain America’s side are Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Bucky also fought alongside them, as did Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) who Falcon recruited.

A short-lived reconciliation happened between Tony and Steve until the former discovered a secret about his past that the latter knew of for some time. The movie ended with Captain America leaving his shield embedded in the Iron Man armor.

Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo directed the film with screenplay written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Captain America: Civil War is the third installment of the Captain America franchise, and the 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), released on May 6, 2016.

In the post credit scenes, it is shown that Winter Soldier will be kept in a high-grade facility owned by Black Panther in Wakanda. Captain America, Iron Man and the rest of the Avengers will soon be seen in Avengers: Infinity War to be shown in May 2018.

Star Wars: Rogue One / Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire after The Great Jedi Purge, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story follows a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: steal the plans for the original Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule. The story takes place immediately before the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

Heading the group of rebels who bravely take on the Emperor and his army is Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones. She is joined by rebel intelligence officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and droid K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk).

Actors Donnie Yen, Wen Jiang, Ben Mendelsohn, Guy Henry, Forest Whitaker, Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen and Jimmy Smits are also among the cast members who give life to characters who secretly set in motion the events of the beloved Star Wars franchise.

Based on a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta, director Gareth Edwards worked with writers Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy to produce the first standalone film for the Star Wars universe. In order to differentiate Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from the trilogies, some deviation from the franchise’s traditions were made.

The most notable deviation would be the lack of an opening crawl, which every previous Star Wars movie had included. Two of the most iconic characters of the first trilogy, Princess Leia and Darth Vader, are featured in the movie. Princess Leia was portrayed by actress Ingvild Deila (with CGI to make her look like a young Carrie Fisher), while actors Spencer Wilding and Daniel Naprous take turns playing Darth Vader, with actor James Earl Jones providing the voice.

Deadpool (2016)

  • Rating: R
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi

Special forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is subjected to a rogue experiment that grants him accelerated healing powers. Shortly after, Wilson adopts the alter ego Deadpool, and with his new abilities and twisted sense of humor, goes on a hunt for the man who nearly destroyed his life.

The character was created by Rob Liefeld for Marvel comics and first appeared in “The New Mutants” vol. 98, released in February 1991. He started out as a villain for the series “The New Mutants” and “X-Force,” but began to evolve into an antihero and in 1997, a comic series in his name began. He also starred in a comic series alongside Cable, a mutant who was born Nathan Summers, the offspring of X-Men’s Scott Summers and Jean Grey’s clone, Madelyne Pryor.

The first Deadpool movie was an unexpected blockbuster and a second installment is already in the works. The first movie featured Ajax, played by Ed Skrein, as the main villain.

In both the comic and movie adaptation, Ajax is one of those responsible for his mutant transformation and for his “almost death.” The second movie will also introduce Cable and Domino, who is one of Deadpool’s love interest, and will serve as a introduction for the upcoming X-Force movie.

Doctor Strange (2016)

  • Rating: PG-13
  • -Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

However, after being taught about the different dimensions and learning about the constant threat that looms on Earth, he began to embrace his role as the humble protector. Taking after the responsibilities of the Ancient One who trained him before her demise, Strange went on to become the Sorcerer Supreme himself.

Dr. Strange, a character that was created for Marvel comics, is the brainchild of artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee.

The most recent movie which was released on October 13, 2016, features renowned actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange. He is joined by actress Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, another surgeon.

Actress Tilda Swinton’s role as the Ancient One is one of the biggest deviations from the source material. In the comics, Ancient One is a man of Asian descent while Swinton’s character, is a Celtic woman who learned from Ancient Ones before her.

Karl Mordo, a character portrayed by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is also introduced differently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While the comic character has always been a villain, the movie version starts as one of the good guys, who questions the ways of the Ancient One, and Dr. Strange eventually. The teaser for the next installment seems to indicate that he will begin his journey to the dark side in the upcoming film.

Wong, who becomes Strange’s staunch ally is portrayed by actor Benedict Wong. Director Scott Derrickson headed production with Kevin Feige as producer and Stan Lee as one of the executive producers. Jon Spaihts, Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargil wrote the script.
