February is starting to become the month when movie studios unleash their first wave of tentpoles for the year, as we saw last year when such films as RoboCop and The LEGO Movie arrived during that frame. That trend continues in 2015, as action-packed and/or big-budget offerings like Jupiter Ascending and Kingsman: The Secret Service will be occupying that same niche.

Kingsman, in particular, has been generating positive word of mouth ahead of its theatrical bow in the U.S. in two weeks’ time (it’s now playing in the U.K. though). 20th Century Fox has taken advantage of that by including several positive film critic quotes in the movie’s TV spot that will air during the Super Bowl XLIX game on Sunday – a trailer that can now be watched online (see above).

Here is the official synopsis for Kingsman: The Secret ...

]]> 7 ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Fan-Made Trailer: Tony Stark vs. Steve Rogers Fri, 30 Jan 2015 16:41:32 +0000

After Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr.’s contract was complete with Marvel but the studio knew as well as fans did that the story of Tony Stark was far from over. Iron Man is a centerpiece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and if The Avengers had yet to face their greatest threat, there’s no way RDJ could truly step away from it all. He said it himself: he likes to feel needed.

It didn’t take long before Robert Downey Jr. signed for another two films with Marvel Studios, and at the time they were referred to only as The Avengers 2 and 3. Since then we’ve learned that The Avengers 3 is actually just the beginning of two-part story titled Infinity War that spans two years in 2018-19. When Marvel made that announcement, unveiling their entire slate of Phase 3 ...

]]> 35 ‘Madame Bovary’ Trailer: Mia Wasikowska Breaks Free Fri, 30 Jan 2015 16:19:15 +0000

Film adaptations of timeless literary classics are a dime a dozen, but when they look as gorgeous as Sophie Barthes’ upcoming spin on Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, it’s hard to not take notice. The film’s first trailer treats its viewers to breathtaking compositions and images from the course of its running time; we’re left with a great first impression and the sense that Barthes’ work could live up to the source material.

And then again, maybe it won’t. Last year, Therese Raquin received a modern screen update via In Secret, and even the talents of Elizabeth Olsen (The Avengers: Age of Ultron), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) couldn’t carry the production; Madame Bovary, with its stacked cast and highbrow craftsmanship, is in the exact same vein, except that it looks more promising by far.

So the trailer does the job it’s ...

]]> 2 ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ TV Spot: ‘Avengers 2′ Trailers, Abridged Version Thu, 29 Jan 2015 22:13:15 +0000

Avengers: Age of Ultron is one of THE cinematic events of the year (but only our #2 most anticipated one) – in large part because Marvel’s superhero team are the same ones who left an indelible mark on the film industry back in 2012.

After The Avengers cracked 1 billion at the box office, the new era of comic book movie shared universes was officially ushered in, resulting in more than 40 movies in the genre coming our way in the next 6 years. That leaves a pretty high bar for Avengers 2 to clear, but so far, it looks like writer/director Joss Whedon is cranking everything up for the sequel – including the practicality of the marketing.

After two trailers for Avengers 2we can safely say that Marvel is reserving a ton of the footage, (hopefully) not to be revealed until Age of Ultron‘s ...

]]> 16 ‘Spooks: The Greater Good’ Teaser Trailer: Kit Harington Joins MI-5 Thu, 29 Jan 2015 20:19:29 +0000

Fans of spy thrillers might already be familiar with the long-running BBC series Spooks, which aired on a few different US networks under the title MI-5 and has since arrived in its entirety on Netflix. As well as being an excellent series in its own right, Spooks also featured a number of actors who either were or would go on to be major stars, including Richard Armitage, Matthew MacFadyen, and David Oyelowo.

Although it was cancelled in 2011, Spooks was popular enough to earn a follow-up movie called Spooks: The Greater Good, which is set for UK release this summer. Peter Firth reprises his role as MI-5′s head of counter-terrorism, Harry Pearce, who is blamed for the escape of dangerous terrorist Adam Qasim (Elyes Gabel) and disappears off the grid soon after. Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) joins the Spooks ...

]]> 7 ‘Ted 2′ Trailer: Ted Fights the Law Thu, 29 Jan 2015 18:16:32 +0000

Family Guy creator (and American Dad! co-creator) Seth MacFarlane made a huge splash at the box office with his live-action feature directing debut, Ted, back in 2012, but his sophomore project as helmsman – last year’s western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West – didn’t fare nearly as well. Now he’s back with the sequel Ted 2; and judging by the first trailer footage (watch it above), well… this certainly looks like a MacFarlane movie.

This green-band preview lays out the story for Ted 2 conceived by MacFarlane and his trusted collaborators Alec Sulking and Wellesley Wild: the living, foul-mouthed, and usually badly-behaved teddy bear Ted (MacFarlane) and his not so dignified girlfriend-turned wife Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) want to adopt a kid. First, however, Ted has to prove that he’s human – in the eyes of the law, that is.

]]> 26 ‘Terminator: Genisys’ Super Bowl Trailer & Poster: Everything Has Changed Thu, 29 Jan 2015 17:26:37 +0000

Depending on how you feel about football, and cybernetic robots fighting to the death, the battle between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks might not be the most exciting matchup of Super Bowl Sunday 2015 – now that Paramount Pictures is set to debut new footage from their quasi-Terminator relaunch, Terminator: Genisys. However, with a host of competing trailers set to debut during the big game (including confirmed spots for Jurassic World, Tomorrowland, and Insurgent, among others), the studio has opted to unveil their Arnold Schwarzenegger-powered Super Bowl spot a few days early.

While last year saw major first-look reveals, most notably the (controversial but highly entertaining) unveiling of Optimus Prime riding Grimlock in Transformers: Age of Extinction, this year’s broadcast appears to be stacked with second-look follow-ups that attempt to shed a bit more light on upcoming ...

]]> 51 ‘Insurgent’ Super Bowl Trailer: Tris is the One Thu, 29 Jan 2015 17:14:36 +0000

Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is back with a new haircut and a new set of allies in The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the second installment in a planned movie quadrilogy based on Veronica Roth’s young adult sci-fi novel series. The films are set in a dystopian future where society is divided up into five factions based on personality traits, and those with more than one prominent personality trait are considered dangerous and disruptive to the system.

The Divergent Series‘ heroine Tris is, of course, a “Divergent” and the fallout from the first film leaves her on the run with a group of rebels, including love interest Four (Theo James), after she and her friends break free of the system. Freedom doesn’t necessarily mean peace, however; Jeanine (Kate Winslet), a leader of the Erudite faction, is conducting mysterious psychological experiments on Divergents and ...

]]> 10 ‘Tomorrowland’ Super Bowl Trailer Teaser: A Place Where Nothing’s Impossible Thu, 29 Jan 2015 16:25:08 +0000

Walt Disney Pictures will replay footage from Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron (in Canada) during the Super Bowl XLIX festivities, but the Mouse House project that will benefit most from its respective game day preview is Tomorrowland. The sci-fi adventure has gained traction amongst cinephiles of late, but awareness within the general public isn’t so pronounced by comparison.

Above, we have a teaser for the Tomorrowland Super Bowl trailer (which will make its way online at a later time). Similar to the movie’s theatrical trailer, the footage here revolves around the discovery of Tomorrowland by young protagonist Casey (Britt Robertson), with voiceover narration provided by George Clooney – playing Frank, a onetime boy genius who (for reasons that will be revealed in the actual film) grows up to become a brilliant, yet disillusioned and reclusive inventor.

Here is the official synopsis for Tomorrowland:

Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, ...

]]> 9 ‘Minions’ Super Bowl Trailer: Party Like a Minion Wed, 28 Jan 2015 21:45:28 +0000

The movie trailers for this year’s Super Bowl XLIX have already started to flood the ‘Net, though the previews for big upcoming tentpoles like Furious 7 and Jurassic World won’t drop online until closer to the actual football championship game. In the meantime, though, we can tide ourselves over with clips like the one above, for the computer-animated film Minions - one that teaches everyone how to embrace their inner Minion while watching the big game.

Illumination Entertainment’s latest animated offering is, of course, a spinoff for the Despicable Me franchise, albeit one without the brilliant super-villain Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) and/or any other human characters from the previous installments. Despicable Me 2 was, in many ways, as much about the Minions’ shenanigans as it was a story about Gru and his adopted daughters, so it’s not surprising that a full-blown ...

]]> 8 ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2′ Super Bowl Trailer Busts Patriots’ Ballgate Wed, 28 Jan 2015 17:31:22 +0000

As Super Bowl XLIX weekend approaches, so do the flood of Super Bowl ads and movie trailers that have become as much a part of the annual Big Game ritual as the game itself.

Getting an early start is Paramount’s Hot Tub Time Machine 2, which wastes no time getting in on the “Ballgate” scandal involving accusations of cheating (by way of deflated footballs) which were levied against Super Bowl contenders The New England Patriots.

If nothing else, the editors of the TV spot deserve credit for a fast turnaround and spot-on tailoring of the sequel’s raunchy comedy to a situation they could have never seen coming during actual production of the movie.

As for the film itself: previous Hot Tub Time Machine 2 trailers suggest that it is pretty much a return to the form of the first film – not surprising, since the cast ...

]]> 6 ‘Child 44′ Trailer: Tom Hardy Tracks a Killer in Soviet Russia Wed, 28 Jan 2015 06:58:50 +0000

Accents are starting to become Tom Hardy’s “thing.” Whether he’s adopting a Brooklyn mumble in The Drop, a dulcet Welsh cadence in Locke, an Australian accent for Mad Max: Fury Road, or the gypsy timbre he aimed for in The Dark Knight Rises, Hardy is a chameleon of inflections. So he makes a natural fit for Child 44, the latest film from Safe House director Daniel Espinosa.

Espinosa’s movie adapts the best-selling yarn by Tom Rob Smith for the screen; Smith used the real-life misdeeds of Andrei Chikatilo as the basis for his novel, the first in a trilogy that chronicles the growing paranoia and political turmoil of Soviet Russia alongside his central murder.

So Child 44 isn’t light reading, which probably means it won’t be light viewing, either. Hardy plays Leo Demidov, an agent in Russia’s secret police force who is exiled from his ...

]]> 21 ‘Jupiter Ascending’ TV Trailers & Image Gallery Tue, 27 Jan 2015 20:51:49 +0000

Jupiter Ascending is the new movie from Matrix Trilogy architects The Wachowskis, who left that milestone franchise behind in the early 2000s and have continued to push their unique vision ever since; though sadly films like Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas have rewarded the pairs’ ambitions with divisive reception and disappointing box office returns.

Jupiter Ascending has been another such problem child; delayed from release last year and given a slot in the ominous February dumping ground.

That all said, with every new trailer or TV spot the film looks more and more intriguing and exciting – from a visual perspective, at least.

Many viewers are probably still not entirely sold a dog-faced Channing Tatum, or other stars like Belle‘s Gugu Mbatha-Raw or Agent Carter‘s James D’Arcy looking like other sorts of half-human, half-animal splice aliens. Could be another case of The Wachowskis’ ambitions (or the themes of transformation they ...

]]> 22 ‘Cinderella’ TV Trailer: Watch the Clock Tue, 27 Jan 2015 16:57:23 +0000

Following the storming success of Sleeping Beauty re-imagining Maleficent in 2014, Disney isn’t wasting any time getting more live-action remakes of its classic animated films onto the big screen. The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast are both on the production line, but next up is director Kenneth Branagh’s whimsical new take on Cinderella.

Branagh’s film was penned by Oscar-nominee Chris Weitz – who’s now working on a Star Wars spinoff for the Disney-owned Lucasfiln – and stars Lily James (Downton Abbey) as the lead and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as her Prince Charming. Apparently no one warned Cinderella that Robb Stark has a poor track record with marriages.

From the first trailer it was clear that Cinderella is not going to be a dark and gritty re-imagining of Disney’s animated ...

]]> 4 ‘Fantastic Four’ Trailer: Be Ready For What’s Coming Tue, 27 Jan 2015 14:27:55 +0000

[Update: Here are 10 cool things we know about the Fantastic Four reboot!]

The first of Screen Rant’s five geek movie questions of 2015 is “Will Fantastic Four Shock the World?” It’s a question born from the mystery surrounding Twentieth Century Fox’s reboot of the Fantastic Four. From uncertainty built around multiple release date changes, a sequel already getting a release date and questions about its position and connectivity to Fox’s X-Men franchise, there was reason to be concerned about the Marvel founding family after the previous attempt at a franchise came to a jarring halt after Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer opened in theaters in 2007.

The new Fantastic Four is being directed by Josh Trank who made a name for himself with the hit low budget, found footage super-powered thriller Chronicle. Outside of comparisons to Chronicle and a stellar cast of stars, there’s been little to ...

]]> 494 ‘She’s Funny That Way’ Trailer: Owen Wilson Is In a World of Trouble Mon, 26 Jan 2015 03:09:33 +0000

The last time Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston appeared onscreen together, it was in the 2008 family dramedy Marley & Me. However, while that release is perhaps best known for its downbeat ending, the pair’s next collaboration looks to be focusing solely on eliciting laughs from its audience.

Wilson and Aniston – along with an ensemble cast that includes Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Will Forte, Rhys Ifans and Cybill Shepherd – star in director Peter Bogdanovich’s new comedy She’s Funny That Way. The film follows a married Broadway director (Wilson) caught up in an affair with a prostitute/aspiring actress (Poots), who is currently in therapy. When she ends up trying out for his latest play, it sets off a web of lies that involves everyone in the production, as well as the therapist (Aniston). (Think of the film as a wackier version of Birdman).

]]> 4 ‘Knock Knock’ Trailer: Keanu Reeves Learns About the Perils of Infidelity Sat, 24 Jan 2015 20:40:03 +0000

From The Strangers to The Purge, the home invasion thriller is a subgenre that has been pretty well tread in the last decade or so, most likely due to the fact that the confined setting and limited cast can work wonders for a film’s budget.

Adding a (mostly) new wrinkle to that oft-used premise, Hostel director Eli Roth has set out to combine the tropes of a home invasion movie with those of a Fatal Attraction style “infidelity gone wrong” piece. The resulting final product is a Keanu Reeves fronted nailbiter entitled simply Knock Knock. The first trailer for the film is embedded above, courtesy of Roth’s Facebook page.Knock Knock stars Reeves as Evan, a successful architect with a seemingly perfect life. He has a a gorgeous wife, overachieving kids, and an immaculate dream home that he himself designed. ...

As we await Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s next installment in their shared movie universe – Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – their animated universe is picking up steam. ]]> 27 ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2′ Red-Band Trailer #2: No Decade Is Safe Fri, 23 Jan 2015 21:15:10 +0000

How many times can a studio cut a trailer for a film without showing off too much footage? In the second, very NSFW red-band trailer for Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (and its third trailer overall), MGM and Paramount treat viewers to variations on the same scenes and the same jokes used in the first two promos released for the movie. There’s a little bit more Adam Scott in the mix here (which is never a bad thing), but that’s about it.

The biggest addition to this teaser is a slight edit made to the story’s timeline. Remember back when Hot Tub Time Machine 2 had a Christmas Day release in 2014? Well, recall how that got pushed back to this coming February, which necessitated minor re-calibrations to the cast’s future-hopping. Instead of 2024, they’re going to warp to 2025 to preserve the script’s ...

]]> 6 ‘Dead Rising: Watchtower’ First Trailer; Release Date Announced Fri, 23 Jan 2015 03:16:41 +0000

Hollywood has been producing big screen adaptations of successful video game franchises for many years. Some have made the leap from game consoles to movie theaters and continue to find success, like Resident Evil, while others, such as Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, floundered. Still, with even more adaptations planned – Assassin’s Creed, World of Warcraft, and Uncharted to name a few – the video game movie trend seems to be ramping up.

Dead Rising joined the ranks of video games to be adapted when it was announced that the Sony-owned Crackle would produce a feature film based on the series (read more about the Dead Rising franchise at Game Rant). Now, a trailer and release date for Dead Rising: Watchtower have been revealed.
