Poster Roundup: 'TRON: Legacy', 'Three Musketeers', And More

We've got new movie posters dribbling out our ears at the moment, including new one-sheets for TRON: Legacy, The Three Musketeers, Tree of Life, Man On A Ledge, and Arthur Christmas.

That's five separate movies to take a look at, not to mention mock and/or praise as being worthy of our anticipation, so let's not waste any more time and jump right in, shall we?

TRON: Legacy

Disney is still in the midst of its marketing bonanza for this winter's 3D tentpole pic, TRON: Legacy and released yet another one-sheet for the film this week - in addition to the recent international posters (though the Tron throwback poster remains our favorite). This week, featured front and center is non-other than the pic's antagonist, Clu 2.0 (a.k.a. CGI young Jeff Bridges).

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) will team with his father Kevin (Bridges) and the warrior gal Quorra (Olivia Wilde) in TRON: Legacy, as the three do battle against the diabolical Clu 2.0 and his legions of digital Recognizers and cyberdisc-armed servants. If nothing else, their adventure will be full to the brim with eye-popping 3D FX and awesome eye candy (besides Wilde and Hedlund, that is).

The Three Musketeers

Paul W.S. Anderson is reuniting once again with his Resident Evil: Aferlife star (and real-life significant other) Milla Jovovich, as well as Orlando Bloom and Inglourious Basterds' Colonel Landa (Christoph Waltz) for a new take on the classical literary adventure tale, The Three Musketeers.

Doug Liman's Musketeers movie went out of commission a while ago, so Anderson's new project looks to be the only 3D, "re-imagining" of the Alexandre Dumas novel on the horizon. The source material is solid and Anderson does know how to handle action - will his new directorial effort be a significant step up in quality from his previous films (which include the first Resident Evil and Alien vs. Predator)?

Here's the official synopsis for Anderson's take on The Three Musketeers, followed by the teaser poster:

When famed Musketeers Athos (Matthew Macfayden), Aramis (Luke Evans), and Porthos (Ray Stevenson) steal highly coveted project designs from a high-security vault, the sweet taste of success is short-lived. Their beautiful partner in crime, Milady (Jovovich), drugs the trio and sells the designs to a higher bidder, the ultra-cool Englishman, Buckingham (Bloom). It’s a major blow to the famed swordsmen. So when, three years later, the devil-may-care young D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman) journeys to Paris to realize his dream of becoming a Musketeer, he finds them a shadow of their former selves, working menial jobs and seeking a cause worth serving.

The conniving Cardinal Richelieu (Waltz) hatches a deadly plot to overthrow the young King Louis (Freddie Fox). Employing the doubly agent Milady to do the dirty work, he frames the King’s new bride, Queen Anne (Juno Temple) in an affair with Buckingham. If the King buys into the lie, war with England will follow, the Queen will die and the people of France will demand a stronger leader—Richelieu himself—to see them through the crisis. If the King doesn’t buy into the lie, peace may yet stand a chance. But for peace to ensure, the three Musketeers and their young apprentice must undertake their most dangerous mission ever—to receive a priceless diamond necklace from the impregnable Tower of London and return it to the Queen in time for an all-important ball.

Tree of Life

Director Terrence Malick has released, on average, about a film every decade for some forty years now and will finally release a fifth, titled The Tree of Life, in 2011. His projects are generally showered with critical accolades and feature some of the most gorgeous visuals and cinematography ever put onscreen - naturally, there is a good deal of interest in what the filmmaker has to offer with his upcoming feature, which stars Brad Pitt and Oscar-winner Sean Penn.

Collider got the following description from Malick himself and provided the image of the film's poster (which can be viewed after the unofficial plot summary):

[In 'The Tree of Life'] we trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of love and mercy, where the father (Pitt) tries to teach his son the world’s way of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

From this story is that of adult Jack (Penn), a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle—precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.

Man On A Ledge

We got our first glimpse this week at Sam Worthington as the titular character in Man On A Ledge, a suspenseful thriller with a plot that sounds more than a bit cliche (and way too similar to the Samuel L. Jackson/Kevin Spacey showdown pic, The Negotiator), but features a pretty solid cast that includes the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Anthony Mackie, and Ed Harris.

Here's the official Man On A Ledge plot description, followed by the poster (which is kind of a cool graphic design, actually):

Nick Cassidy (Worthington) was an honest cop. Now he’s in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Desperate, he seizes the first chance to escape. Hours later, he is freshly shaven in an expensive suit, standing on a window ledge high above New York City. As a crowd gathers below, police cordon off the area and agree to Nick’s request to speak with pretty police negotiator Lydia Anderson (Banks). But Lydia doesn’t know that she is part of his grand plan, a plan that could give them both a second chance.

Speaking quietly into a lapel microphone, Nick coordinates the high-tech theft of a $30 million diamond—the same diamond he was convicted of stealing. It’s the only way he can prove his innocence, but he needs Lydia’s help—and he’s running out of time. When his identity is exposed, a SWAT team positions itself on the roof, read to take him out. Lydia isn’t sure he’s telling the truth, but if he really was set up for the diamond heist, it had to be an inside job, which means at least one of the cops on the scene wants Nick dead. With SWAT about to move, cops destroying the evidence that could save him and nowhere to go but down, Nick’s chances of survival are getting slimmer by the minute.

Arthur Christmas

Aardman Animation was the studio responsible for the delightful claymation Wallace & Gromit shorts and feature-length film, as well as the decent Dreamworks' release, Flushed Away, which utilized CG-animation in a manner that allowed the filmmakers to imitate the look and movement of clay-made characters.

Those same animators are currently at work on Arthur Christmas and have assembled a nice voice cast for the project that includes James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, and Hugh Laurie. While Christmas-themed films are often an iffy proposition, the talent involved in this holiday tale makes it one worth keeping an eye out for.
