Tuesday Movie Posters

In the past, posters were one of the primary items that studios would use to promote their upcoming films - and the only way a person could see them was at the local movie theater. Well, like the great Bob Dylan once said, "Times, they are a changing." With the advent of the Internet, studios can now put their posters in front of more eyes, and they aren't just limited to standard one-sheets either.

Today fans can enjoy all sorts of media types, sizes, and forms. All kinds of posters are popular and with more and more talented artists becoming increasingly adept at using Photoshop we've surely not seen the limit of their abilities yet.

Today we've scoured the blog-o-sphere to share with you fifteen posters for eight upcoming films - so let's jump right into it.

The Walking Dead

Anticipation has been slowly building for the AMC zombie TV show The Walking Dead for quite a few months now, thanks to some early buzz generated by industry insiders. The trailer and TV clips for the show are great and hint at a series capable of delivering everything zombie fans are looking for in TV programming.

AMC has done what it can to promote the show - including some creative marketing at this years Comic Con. Will it (un)live up to the hype? We'll just have to tune in next month to find out.

The Walking Dead premieres on AMC October 31st, 2010 at 10/9 Central.

Paranormal Activity 2

When the low budget horror film Paranormal Activity was in limited release last Fall, no one could have anticipated the amount of money it would take in. With a worldwide box office take close to $200 million, the only thing moviegoers aren't sure of is just how many sequels we'll be seeing. Paramount Studios was quick to green light Paranormal Activity 2, and after only a few months of production, the sequel will enjoy a wide release in theaters.

However, will Paramount's Demand It marketing approach (the same one they used for the original film) work for the sequel? Can lightning strike twice for the makers of Paranormal Activity 2?

If you haven't already watched the trailer you can do so HERE.

Paranormal Activity 2 enters theaters October 22nd, 2010.

Priest

Priest is going to either redefine the comic book movie genre, and will take things in a brand new creative direction - or fall flat on its 3D face (this generation's Judge Dredd). If Priest performs poorly at the box office, it will be hard to blame the cast: Paul Bettany (Master and Commander), Karl Urban (Star Trek), Cam Gigandet (Twilight Saga), and Maggie Q (Mission Impossible 3) all star with Sam Raimi producing.

In case you're unfamiliar with the source material, here's a quick summary of what to expect from Priest: 100 years after the war between Christians and Satanists, a Christian warrior priest (Bettany) disobeys church law by teaming with a young sheriff (Gigandet) and a priestess (Maggie Q) in order to track down a cult of vampire outlaws led by the insidious Black Hat (Urban) a former Christian-turned Satanic priest.

You can watch the trailer HERE.

Extraterrestrial

Very little is known about the film Extraterrestrial. However, the film looks like intriguing fun - at least judging by the film's posters. Spanish director/writer Nacho Vigalondo (Time Crimes) has added a fresh layer of interest to the alien invasion movie:

Everyone knows what to do if one morning the sky would be absolutely full of UFOs: run as fast as you can. However, what would happen if the invasion started while you are in the flat of the girl of your dreams, the one you have just met?

Extraterrestrial sounds like it could be an alien Shaun of the Dead, but there haven't been any teasers, clips or trailers released yet - so there is no telling what direction the film will take. One thing is for sure, if I was in the house of a girl I had just met and aliens started invading, she had better be wearing comfortable running shoes.

Extraterrestrial will in invade on January 1, 2011.

The Smurfs

The first trailer for The Smurfs hit theaters this summer and featured more inappropriate humor than we were expecting for a kid's film ("Smurf happens"... really?). Packed full of big-name star power, The Smurfs will feature live-action performances by Neil Patrick Harris (Starship Troopers), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Jayma Hayes (Glee), and Hank Azaria (Year One) as Gargamel.

Lending their voices to the titular blue creatures will be Alan Cumming (Gutsy Smurf), Katy Perry (Smurfette), Anton Yelchin (Clumsy Smurf), Paul Ruebens (Jokey Smurf), B.J. Novak (Baker Smurf), and classic funny man Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf.

Whether you like it or not The Smurfs make theaters their new village on August 3rd, 2011.

Spider-Man

Spider-Man has been an emotional roller coaster for fans of the web-slinging crime fighter. In an unexpected and shocking move, Sony showed the previous cast the door and announced it would be rebooting the big-budget franchise with director Marc Webb at the helm. To make matters worse, in another announcement (this time less shocking), Sony revealed they would be shooting Spider-Man in 3D as well as taking Peter Parker back to high school. The film is also expected to carry a darker and grittier tone and overall feel.

Casting Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as the titular superhero was a bold choice by Webb and Sony but Garfield shows real potential, so it could work out.

It's been a long and hard-fought road for the Spider-Man reboot; though you'd never guess by looking at the film's teaser poster. I can describe it in three words - LAZY! LAZY! LAZY!

The Spider-Man reboot swings into theaters on July 3rd, 2012.

Men in Black 3

While Men in Black 3 is still in the early stages of pre-production, we do have a few details, including the supposed story: The evil alien Yaz (Jemaine Clement) travels back in time to kill Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), and Agent J (Will Smith) has to go to 1969 and team up with a young Agent K (Josh Brolin) in order to stop Yaz from setting off a chain of events that will destroy the world in the future.

There is very little doubt that Men in Black 3 will perform well at the box office when it is released in 2012. The previous two films combined for an impressive worldwide box office haul of $1.1 billion. However, the teaser posters shares the same uninspired design as the Spider-Man one-sheet.

Arthur Christmas

Arthur Christmas is probably the least well-known of the films we're covering. This is the first official media we've seen, even though the film has been in the works since 2009. Even the Arthur Christmas IMDB page is pretty barren.

Hopefully, this poster marks the beginning of the film's media strategy - and we'll be getting even more information soon. According to Collider, Arthur Christmas will be co-directed by Barry Cook (Mulan) and Sarah Smith. Smith co-wrote the script with Borat scribe, Peter Baynham, and the CGI animation is being produced by Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit) as well as Sony Pictures Imageworks.

Arthur Christmas opens November 11, 2011.
