Priest The American New Photos From Priest & The American

A batch of new images have surfaced from two very different upcoming action films – namely, the comic book adaptation Priest and the George Clooney assassin thriller, The American.

Priest is based off the graphic novel of the same name by Min-Woo Hyung and stars Paul Bettany (the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man movies) as a religious warrior named, well, Priest.  The character lives in a dystopian world where the Church rules over the last remnants of humanity left after a centuries-long war against the vampires – a battle which is anything but over.

The film is being directed by Scott Charles Stewart, who made his feature-length film directorial debut earlier this year with Legion.  That flick was an unmemorable but stylish FX-friendly horror/thriller pic that featured – among other things – an obscenity spewing, spider-grandma monster.

Judging by these new images from Priest (see below), Stewart’s followup effort with his Legion star Bettany will have slick visuals and explosions aplenty.  Whether or not the feature will be a step up in terms of quality storytelling remains to be seen for now.

George Clooney will play a professional warrior (re: assassin) in his own feature, The American, which will hit theaters at the beginning of September.  The film finds Clooney’s hit man from the states overseas in Italy, prepping to pull off what he hopes will be his last mission – anyone care to make a wager that events don’t go quite as planned? 😉

The film looks to be a moody thriller that is heavier on atmosphere and personal drama and less like a Jason Bourne film that stars George Clooney.  These early pics from the film (which you can check out below) indicate as much and look positively low-key in comparison to the fiery, guns-blazing images from Priest.  To each their own, I suppose.

The American will arrive in theaters in the U.S. on September 1st, 2010.

Priest will attack theaters in the U.S. on May 13th, 2011.

  1. Never read Priest growing up but did see the covers all the time while buying my Marvel books. But this looks good, I like Post-Apoc movies and Paul Bettany so I’ll give it a try. I thought one of the key plots of the series was that Priest ws one of the last remaining fertile men on the planet but was, as a priest, celibate. Which, of course, adds a whole layer of angst (and pressure!) to our hero’s psyche.

And while American looks good, honestly, I’ve seen that move ten times in the last two decades. Clooney just has more gravitas than Stallone. Or Cage. Maybe not as much as Jean Reno…

    • I’ve read almost the entire series – the celibate thing isn’t anywhere in there. there are also no vampires in the series. It’s set in the old west and is a mainly about a war between fallen angels, god, and Ivan Isaacs (a priest who sold half his soul to a man turned devil in order to get revenge for the murder of the woman he loved). While this movie may turn out to be good, about the only things from the books are the title and charachter names. Also if you look at the pictures, the priest should have the cross on his forehead, not the woman. I’m really sad they didn’t stick to the original story. It was incredibly creative and not just another vampire story.

      • the reason the cross mark is significant is because belial marks him when he sells half his soul.

  2. Every time I see news on Priest I confuse it with Preacher and get really excited. Then I get disappointed.

  3. Paul, didn’t the Legion tell you not to become a Priest, but i guess you couldn’t stay away from religion or you found religion. Paul, I hope that you got to bang that hot pregnant girl in Legion before you became a Priest.

Clooney, just stick to political movies or as Danny Ocean and stop staring at goats. Goat play is not in season and neither is you playing an old looking assassin, but your still a great actor.
