I receive many emails asking me to promote various items, most of which I ignore - but when this email from Tara Settembre arrived in my inbox I knew that although it might take a little while to get to it, I’d have to post this up.
Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is a newly formed national initiative to help raise awareness and accelerate science toward finding an end to cancer. After all, cancer affects all of us. It kills more than half a million people a year in America alone. 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes.
SU2C is inviting emerging filmmakers across the country to join the fight against cancer by turning their cameras on this disease. How has cancer affected your life? Show us your perspective, from the insightful to the irreverent, and take a stand. Each film must focus on the subject of cancer, being affected by cancer, and/or the battle against it.
The entrants will have the privilege of being judged by some of the industry’s top filmmakers and producers, including Laura Ziskin (Producer, Spider-Man, As Good As It Gets, Pretty Woman), Robert Greenwald (Director/Producer Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism), Julie Taymour (Director Across The Universe) and Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men 1 & 2, Secret Life of Bees, Semi Pro) and Sherry Lansing (Former CEO of Paramount Pictures).
The top three finalists will premiere on Stand Up To Cancer’s website — alongside content produced by top filmmakers, journalists and performers.
Deadline: ALL MATERIALS MUST BE RECIEVED BY August 1, 2008.

Good for you Vic..Cheers to Screen Rant for picking a cause and supporting it with this medium….
I salute you!!!
Good cause indeed. My Mum’s been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and I’ve been raising money on the site for Macmillan Cancer Care.
I might see if she wants to be a star!
Vic
Thanks Vic. She caught C-Diff in hospital too - the hospital bug that’s been causing an uproar in the UK - so she’s really going through the wars just now.
Spirits high and keeping positive though.
My family’s thoughts and prayers go out to your Mom Richard…I wish you both peace and love..
Cheers
I wish your Mom the best Richard. Miricles happen all the time so don’t give up!

Its really a crime that Stem Cell research is being surpressed.
The cure lies there.
I personally believe that (the powers that be) don’t want a cure for the General population anyway. The medical establishment would loose billions if there was a cure.
1. It’s not being suppressed, just not financed by the gov’t. Private industry can research it to its heart’s content.
2. Nothing has come from embryotic stem cell research AFAIK, but some possible leads have come from ADULT stem cell research.
Vic
Well, private industry has found benifits, but most of those companies are out of the US, therefore its not covered by the Us media and you don’t hear about it.
Stem-cells can be grown without using Embryotic material. They can also be put into the body with no counter effects or rejection from the patient.
Its a natural cure that once perfected will extend the lifespan of humans, and cure “most” desease’s
Its easy to see why the medical community and the Government take a stand against it.
They don’t want to upset the status quo of BIG BUSINESS…
Many thanks 790 (don’t mean to hijack the thread Vic) that’s much appreciated. We’re all positive and she’s a fighter.
I used to know a Richard Brunton from Riverside Ca.
I will incude your mom in my prayers Richard….
