With more and more movies turning to existing properties instead of original scripts, actors being asked to embody established characters is now commonplace, not a rarity. The latest novel-to-big-screen adaptation puts Tom Cruise in the extremely-oversized shoes of Jack Reacher, and while it may be the latest instance of an actor cast in a role bearing almost no resemblance to themselves, it's certainly not the first.
Comic books, novels, TV shows and the inevitable reboots to come all mean that more and more famous faces and newcomers will be asked not to make people care about new characters, but live up to the expectation and legend of ones they already cherish.
The list is only going to get longer as the years go by, here's our Top 10 Characters That Look Nothing Like Their Source Material. Some might surprise you.
My favourite change was the character of Red played by Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption. They even poke fun at it in the movie by having Freeman joking that the nickname was because he was Irish!
I still to this day hate the Burton Batman movies, the only thing they share with the source material is the names of characters, places and things… And even to this day we had to endure the black rubber suit because of Burton.
facepalm to the maximum
They should have listed the entire cast of Wanted also. There was absolutely no similarities between the movie and the comic series other than the names.
I can live with Will Smith as James West, anachronisms aside. Constantine always reminded me of Sting in the comics. Michael Keaton ticked me off then and still does. (That was the first “serious” superhero movie and Burton put his small-framed, wavy haired, weak-chinned buddy in it. But Nicholson was good at least.
The last air bender… I watched every episode with my teenage sons and often found myself laughing out loud!!! That being said, when the live-action version came out I decided to judge it on it’s own merits rather than a strict comparison to the cartoon. even though the characterizations could not have been more starkly different, the movie was not “horrible”. It was an entertaining escape and quite enjoyable, ask anyone NOT ALREADY A FAN OF THE CARTOON. It would seem to me that the carttoonies just got all butt hurt because he changed things. Having said that, as a fan of the show myself, I wish he had followed the story characterizations much closer and was very disappointed in his choice to wander SO FAR from the source material but I’m not about to go an an immature rant about it… oh wait…. crap, i just did!!!
What about her? This is a list of characters who don’t look like their descriptions in the source material, not of characters who look 100% like they are supposed to in the source material (like Rue).
I haven’t haven’t had time to re-read through the comments, but Cruise in Interview with the Vampire should have made this list.

So is the same with Nolan’s “Batman”. I don’t see anyone b****ing about that. Atleast Burton got the darkness of the comics right.
