Bridget Jones 3 needs a new director Movie News Wrap Up: October 7th 2011 This week:

It appears that Bridget Jones may be the Bride, and not the Bridesmaid; action producer Joel Silver gets ready for The Envoy; War Horse‘s Jeremy Irvine has Great Expectations; every cloud has a Silver Lining for Julia Stiles and Chris Tucker – while Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is in hot Pursuit.

1. Bridesmaids helmer Paul Feig has dropped out of directing Bridget Jones 3 for Universal Pictures and Working Title Films.

This leaves producers in a bit of a pickle because the film is set to start shooting in January, with original stars Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant returning.

Feig developed the most recent draft of the script, but Deadline reports that “that both sides agreed it didn’t work out and that maybe this is just a quintessential British comedy that needs a British sensibility”.

Meanwhile, Feig is hard at work on a new comedy for producer Judd Apatow, which may star Jon Hamm and a man-obsessed Melissa McCarthy – who’ll be playing a character, not herself.

So, the hunt is on for a director to make the prospect of Bridget Jones 3 a reality. Shudder.

2. Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are attached to produce a new action thriller titled The Envoy for Warner Bros.

Robert Lynn wrote the spec script which “centers on young diplomatic courier whose routine delivery turns deadly when it’s discovered the sensitive information he carries contains stolen plans for an attack on American interests. He must make it to the American embassy in Vienna while various forces try to stop him.”

You can already hear the agents of every young Hollywood actor beating down Silver’s door. He is, after all, the producer behind action hits like Die Hard, The Matrix and Commando. Although, he did produce Gothika and the ill-fated Cindy Crawford starrer Fair Game– but we’ll let that those two slide.

Cue up some Warren Zevon.

3. War Horse’s Jeremy Irvine is set to join a vast array of acting luminaries in the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations.

Jeremy Irvine stars in Great Expectations1 Movie News Wrap Up: October 7th 2011 Irvine will play Pip in the film opposite Harry Potter stars Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Robbie Coltrane; X-Man Jason Flemyng and Trainspotter Ewen Bremner.

Shooting on the Mike Newell directed film starts on October 10th.

4. Julia Stiles and the lesser-spotted Chris Tucker will join Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in director David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook.

Deadline reports:

“The movie, based on Matthew Quick’s novel, centers on a teacher (Cooper) who is institutionalized for depression and released into the care of his mother. He ends up falling for an unstable woman (Lawrence) while trying to win back his estranged wife. Stiles, who is signed, will play Lawrence’s older sister.”

Tucker’s role is unknown, but I’d hazard a guess and say that he’s some sort of comic relief/best friend. Although, I could be wrong.

5. The ever-busy Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will star in The Pursuit for Emmett/Furla Films and Cheetah Vision Films.

According to Variety:

“The story centers on a cop and criminal inadvertently teaming up to track down an escaped bank robber while a determined U.S. Marshal hunts the men to prevent them from killing the convict.”

Into the Blue scribe Matt Johnson wrote the script, while Soul Plane’s Jessy Terrero will direct the film, which sounds as generic as they come.

  1. I’m still waiting for a movie starring my dream cast: 50 Cent, Vanessa Hudgens and Taylor Lautner. A cameo by Robert Pattinson would be the cherry on top. :)

  2. The Envoy is the only one out of those that sounds interesting. Why am I thinking that James Franco is going to get the role?

  3. Pursuit & Envoy sound watchable, like on my Netflix account. Not worth going to theatre or buying DVD, tho.
