We're in the middle of the summer movie season yet again, and May already brought its share of both hotly anticipated crowdpleasers (Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) and underwhelming box office flops (looking at you, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). The latter was far more indicative of the month as a whole, with high-profile sequels like Alien: Covenant and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales as well as Dwayne Johnson's Baywatch all failing to meet expectations. So, despite the lackluster Memorial Day box office (the lowest in nearly two decades), this month brings an even more compelling array of promising films, from superhero epics to low-budget critical darlings.

So, as always, here are 10 films to check out in June 2017:

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Release Date: June 2)

Two kids laughing at Captain Underpants in Captain Underpants Movie

Based on the popular children's books, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie follows a pair of elementary school pranksters (Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch) who wind up hypnotizing their principal (Ed Helms) into thinking he is a underwear-clad superhero that they invented. Of course, said hero is put to the test when their town is invaded by a mad scientist with a sinister plan.

Truth be told, Captain Underpants offers an irreverent addition to superhero cinema, perhaps at a time when the genre needs a fresh spin. With Turbo director David Soren at the helm and a script by Storks filmmaker Nicholas Stoller, this is one superhero epic that sets aside the dark theme and contemplative subtext to focus on good ol' fashioned adventure and hilarious hijinks.

Wonder Woman (Release Date: June 2)

Gal Gadot and Themyscira in Wonder Woman

You might have heard some controversial chatter about this one lately. All that aside, Wonder Woman is currently riding high on a wave of critical acclaim and impressive box office projections. Last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad both earned big money during their theatrical runs, but the Patty Jenkins-directed origin story could be poised to be the first DC Extended Universe film to please both audiences and critics in equal measure.

Gal Gadot -- fresh from her scene-stealing turn as Diana Prince in the aforementioned Batman v Superman -- takes center stage in this World War I period adventure that sees the princess of Themyscira venture away from her homeland to defend humanity. All signs point to this being an all-out winner, and if it lands the way it is poised to, Wonder Woman could easily take the DCEU to the next level.

It Comes at Night (Release Date: June 9)

It Comes at Night poster and trailer

A24 may be the studio behind films like Ex Machina, The Witch and Moonlight. However, the studio has yet to really find its breakthrough 2017 hit so far. Perhaps the psychological horror film It Comes at Night -- the latest film from Trey Edward Shults (Krisha) -- has what it takes to win over audiences, just as it has already begun to earn love from critics.

The film's story is shrouded in mystery, but we know it involves two families and an unknown outside threat. Regardless, we get the sense that It Comes at Night is the kind of film for which its effectiveness depends largely on your foreknowledge before entering the theater. In any case, we're eager to see what stars Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott and Carmen Ejogo are up against in this one.

Sofia Boutella The Mummy

The Mummy (Release Date: June 9)

Eighteen years ago, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz headlined a new take on the classic Universal monster film The Mummy, but don't expect either star to return for this modern-day reboot. Instead, Tom Cruise stars as Nick Morton, a man who becomes the unwitting target of an awakened mummy (Sofia Boutella).

This film -- directed by veteran screenwriter Alex Kurtzman -- is, of course, intended as the first installment in what Universal is calling its Dark Universe, an interconnected web of films that will also include Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Russell Crowe), the Invisible Man (Johnny Depp) and Frankenstein's Monster (Javier Bardem). For this star-studded plan to work, it all hinges on The Mummy.

47 Meters Down (Release Date: June 16)

Mandy Moore's career is already in the midst of a resurgence, thanks to her role on NBC series This Is Us. Now the singer/actress stars in 47 Meters Down, a new horror film from director Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door). The story follows two young women (Moore and Claire Holt) on a cage-diving trip who wind up trapped underwater and surrounded by great white sharks.

Last year's The Shallows became a sleeper hit by focusing on the elemental terror of being lost in the middle of the ocean. 47 Meters Down looks to take that a step further by tapping into an even more harrowing environment. In a sea of franchise fare, 47 Meters Down could be one of the few original genre films to really hit it big this month.

All Eyez on Me (Release Date: June 16)

Demetrius Shipp Jr in All Eyez on Me

F. Gary Gray's Straight Outta Compton managed to transcend the hip hop biopic to become a critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated blockbuster to the tune of more than $200 million worldwide. Since the story of N.W.A. captivated audiences, All Eyez on Me has a real opportunity to tap into the life of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur.

Newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays Shakur, as the film chronicles his rise to stardom and his fatal shooting at the age of 25. Meanwhile, Jamal Woolard reprises his role as The Notorious B.I.G. from 2009 drama Notorious. It's difficult to gauge how All Eyez on Me will depict the circumstances of Shakur's life and death, but we're interested to see if it has the breakout potential we're hoping for.

Cars 3 (Release Date: June 16)

Cars 3

Pixar's Cars films may not be the studio's most beloved -- Cars 2 is among its lowest-grossing and most tepidly reviewed efforts -- but the fact remains that Lightning McQueen's (voiced by Owen Wilson) story has a built-in audience and generates a ton of merchandising profits as well. So Cars 3 is racing to theaters this month, seemingly determined to make up for the previous installment.

While the espionage-centered storyline of its predecessor was heavily criticized, this entry looks like it is refocusing on McQueen's struggle to remain relevant in a changing world. When new racing star Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer) arrives on the scene, McQueen must prove himself worthy of being the champ all over again. Hopefully, director Brian Fee's film can give us the traditional Pixar feels.

The cast of Rough Night

Rough Night (Release Date: June 16)

Ever since Bridesmaids was an Oscar-nominated box office smash in 2011, Hollywood has realized that ladies too want to revel in R-rated raunch comedies just as much as the guys (imagine that). This month's effort to tap into that demographic is Rough Night, a bachelorette weekend gone wrong comedy with a standout ensemble cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Zoe Kravitz and Ilana Glazer.

Lucia Aniello -- best known for working on Glazer's Broad City -- makes her feature directorial debut here, and the film's cast and broadly comedic premise could help it connect with audiences this month, especially since it is relatively light on R-rated comedies. Still, it may face stiff competition during a crowded opening weekend. We'll see if Rough Night can deliver the laughs moviegoers are searching for.

Transformers: The Last Knight (Release Date: June 21)

Transformers The Last Knight - King Arthur

We know, we know. Not everyone is looking forward to this one, as Michael Bay's Transformers franchise is one of the more divisive film series running today. Nevertheless, we'd be remiss to not include this fifth entry, the first to hit theaters since the announcement of a full-fledged shared universe for the Autobots. Reportedly, this one may finally be Bay's last go-round with the franchise (just like the last one was).

In Transformers: The Last Knight, Mark Wahlberg and a handful of other series regulars return for another adventure (along with new addition Anthony Hopkins as a scientist with information on the Transformers), as the battle between man and machine rages on. The marketing indicates that this entry will tie Arthurian legend into the Autobots' story, though it's unclear how this will play into the mythos.

The Beguiled (Release Date: June 23)

Colin Farrell in The Beguiled (2017)

Sofia Coppola has been known to make waves whenever she steps behind the camera. The director of classics like The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation reunites with her Marie Antoinette star Kirsten Dunst as well as an ensemble cast that includes Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning for The Beguiled.

Based on Thomas P. Cullinan's novel, the story centers on a girls' school during the Civil War, and the drama that ensues when an injured soldier is taken in. The film is already being praised for its direction and performances, with Kidman in particular earning attention. In limited release this month, The Beguiled could be one of the year's first true awards contenders - Coppola already won Best Director at Cannes.

The Big Sick (Release Date: June 23)

Zoe Kazan and Kumail Nanjiani in The Big Sick

Kumail Nunjiani may be best known for his role on HBO comedy Silicon Valley, but The Big Sick could single-handedly help him make the leap to film. Directed by Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name Is Doris), the film is based on the real-life love story of Nunjiani and wife Emily V. Gordon -- both of whom co-wrote the screenplay -- and stars Nunjiani and Zoe Kazan.

Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, critics were raving about the film's seamless blend of comedy and drama as well as the supporting turns by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as Emily's parents. Amazon Studios soon picked up distribution rights for The Big Sick and are launching the film into select theaters this month ahead of a wider release later this summer.

Baby Driver's crew

Baby Driver (Release Date: June 28)

Audiences may never get the chance to see Edgar Wright's vision of Ant-Man, but rest assured that the filmmaker behind films like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has plenty of exciting projects left to share with the world. His first directorial effort since 2013 sci-fi comedy The World's EndBaby Driver looks to be a culmination of sorts for Wright's distinctive style.

Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) stars as the titular getaway driver, who must help pull off one last heist in order to escape with his girlfriend (Lily James) and get out from under the thumb of a crime boss (Kevin Spacey). That plot alone sounds familiar, but a killer soundtrack, unique aesthetic and supporting turns by Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm and Jon Bernthal could make Baby Driver stand out this month.

Despicable Me 3 (Release Date: June 30)

Despicable Me 3

Whether you like it or not, the Minions are back for another round of big-screen mayhem, but this time, they're back as supporting players in Despicable Me 3. Steve Carell, of course, returns as reformed villain Gru, who meet his long-lost twin brother (also Carell) and faces off against former child star Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker).

It's been four years since Despicable Me 2 earned $970 million at the worldwide box office, and while we're tempted to think that this sequel might not reach the same heights, the $1 billion success of Minions has taught us not to underestimate Illumination Entertainment's signature franchise. Since the first film hit in 2010, the Despicable Me brand has become a bonafide phenomenon, after all.

The House (Release Date: June 30)

Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler The House

Separately, Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler have proven their powerhouse comedic talents. Now The House unites the two Saturday Night Live alum as a married couple who opens up an illegal casino in their basement in order to replenish their daughter's college fund. Jason Mantzoukas, Michaela Watkins and Ryan Simpkins play supporting roles.

The House marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Andrew J. Cohen (Neighbors), and the film's biggest competition this month may very well be fellow R-rated comedy Rough Night. Still, the combined star power and widespread appeal of Ferrell and Poehler could help the film earn an audience and serve as shrewd counter-programming to Despicable Me 3.

That's a lot of high-profile films heading to theaters in the coming weeks. While we're curious to see if Edgar Wright's Baby Driver lives up to the hype and whether The Mummy successfully launches Universal's monster-filled Dark Universe, the big question for the geek community this month will undoubtedly be how director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman fares with moviegoers. The film has the potential to not only become the first universally beloved film in the DCEU but also the first female-led superhero film to become a runaway hit.
