Most Anticipated Movies 2014 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Despite a few expensive flops scattered throughout the year, 2013′s total box office haul managed to narrowly beat 2012′s, thanks to big-budget franchise sequels like Iron Man 3, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Despicable Me 2 – the latter of which also broke the record for home video sales. It was another year of comic book films and sequels grabbing the attention of moviegoing audiences and 2014 looks to follow the trend.

The Screen Rant editorial staff has perused through all of the films debuting in theaters in 2014 and narrowed down a list of 20 that we’re most anticipating. From familiar franchises, ambitious comic book projects and a few interesting adaptations – 2014 is looking to be another promising year for movie geeks.

Keep in mind, these are not films we necessarily expect to be the “best” – these are movies at the time of this publication (some don’t even have a trailer yet!) that we are most excited to see and cover on the site. They’re genre films we discuss and analyze most on Screen Rant and ones we hope to enjoy along with our readers and podcast listeners. Let’s begin our countdown of the 20 movies we’re anticipating most in 2014.

Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage

After continued mixed reviews and a drop at the box office with 2013′s The Desolation of Smaug, Peter Jackson needs to knock it out of the park with the trilogy-closing third installment in the drawn-out adaptation of The Hobbit. With the return of the incredibly animated and voiced Smaug and an epic war about to be had, we are excited to see how The Hobbit leads into The Fellowship of The Ring and hope it can make up for the lower points of its predecessors.

Matt Damon powered up in a powered exoskeleton combat suit in 2013 with Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium - and in 2014, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt will do the same in a war against alien invaders (and time). The footage at Comic-Con and the film’s cast make Edge of Tomorrow an interesting sci-fi followup, albeit an unrelated one, to 2013′s Oblivion - which we dug here at Screen Rant.

-

-

Release Date: March 14, 2014
Director: Scott Waugh
Cast: Aaron Paul, Dominic Cooper, Imogen Poots, Michael Keaton

With Fast & Furious 7 delayed a year and the franchise’s last two installments favoring borderline-superhuman, over-the-top action sequences, Disney and Dreamworks attempt a risky video game adaptation of a property that generally doesn’t embrace story or characters but do so with a desire to deliver authentic, real-life stunts with supercars. Tapping Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul to lead the chase and having seen one of these action sequences shot up close and personal on set, we’re excited to see if Need For Speed can break the molds of both the racing and video game genres.

Combing Robot Chicken-esque stop-motion animation and a hilarious cast, concept and story, The LEGO Movie is one of the more unique and exciting new franchises to hit cinemas in 2014.

-

10. How To Train Your Dragon 2

Release Date: June 13, 2014
Director: Dean DeBlois
Cast: Cate Blanchett, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig

One of the most fun and heartwarming animated films in recent memory, How to Train Your Dragon managed to offer the closest experience to actually flying while sitting in a theater seat ever – even more than James Cameron’s Avatar, arguably. The entire voice cast, and our favorite dragon Toothless return for the eagerly anticipated followup.

-

9. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: July 11, 2014
Director: Matt Reeves
Cast: Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Keri Russell

We’re still bitter about Andy Serkis not getting some sort of Academy Award nomination for his incredible motion-capture performance as Caeser in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In the followup, which takes place many years later after the catastrophic events of RiseDawn of the Planet of the Apes introduces a new cast of human characters to surround the scene-stealing Serkis.

-

8. The Raid 2

The Raid 2 Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: March 28, 2014
Director: Gareth Evans
Cast: Donny Alamsyah, Iko Uwais, Raiden Integra, Yayan Ruhian

Gareth Evans impressed us with The Raid: Redemption and its mindblowing action sequences, and the fact that its getting a sequel is reason enough to get excited about seeing more of Rama (Iko Uwais) kicking butt on screen. The Raid 2: Berandal sees Uwais (and director Evans) return for the main role in a story that takes place just hours after the original.

-

7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The Amazing Spider Man 2 Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: May 2, 2014
Director: Marc Webb
Cast: Andrew Garfield, Dane DeHaan, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field

While The Amazing Spider-Man brought us a wonderful cast, its story was lacking and in some respects, incomplete. With the ‘setup’ out of the way and plans for multiple sequels and spinoffs officially announced by Sony, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has high expectations and a cast array of characters from the comics all (seemingly) carefully placed for the future of the series. With so much riding in the next Peter Parker adventure, we can’t help but get excited about the potential of another Marvel Cinematic Universe.

-

6. Transformers 4

Transformers 4 Age of Extinction Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: June 27, 2014
Director: Michael Bay
Cast: Jack Reynor, Kelsey Grammer, Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci

Despite saying otherwise for quite sometime, Michael Bay decided to return to the director’s chair for Transformers: Age of Extinction. The franchise’s fourth live-action installment introduces new lead human characters led by Mark Wahlberg as well as plenty of new Cybertronian vehicles, including the fan-favorite Dinobots. After Bay improved upon the action sequences and visuals for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, we’re amped to see more of Optimus Prime and company destroying more villains in the followup. Maybe this time we’ll get to know some of the supporting bots?

-

5. Interstellar

Interstellar Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: November 7, 2014
Director: Christopher Nolan
Cast: Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Jessica Chastain, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Caine, Topher Grace, Wes Bentley

With The Dark Knight trilogy behind him and Inception proving director Christopher Nolan’s creativity when it comes to science fiction, it’s impossible to not get excited about Chris Nolan and his brother’s screenplay about astronauts travelling through the first discovered wormhole.

-

4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America 2 The Winter Soldier Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: April 4, 2014
Directors: Anthony Russo & Joe Russo
Cast: Anthony Mackie, Chris Evans, Cobie Smulders, Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan

Our insiders told us long ago that the script for Captain America 2 was something to get excited about and when we saw the footage for The Winter Soldier at Comic-Con we couldn’t believe how impressive the action sequences, characters and visuals looked. After Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World attempted to deliver standalone experiences, we’re excited to get back to S.H.I.E.L.D. and the other, less-super heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a film that’s hyped up to be the bridge between The Avengers and 2015′s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

-

3. X-Men: Days of Future Past

X Men Days of Future Past Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: May 23, 2014
Director: Bryan Singer
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Peter Dinklage

X-Men: Days of Future Past serves not only as a sequel to X-Men: First Class, but as a followup to the original X-Men movie trilogy that brings almost every hero and villain back. Bryan Singer returns to the director’s chair to tell a time travel story that has the potential to “fix” the continuity of the long-running superhero franchise and help launch all sorts of sequels and spinoffs. In fact, a sequel is already in the works with a confirmed release date in 2016.

-

2. Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: August 1, 2014
Director: James Gunn
Cast: Benicio Del Toro, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Djimon Hounsou, Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana

The riskiest and most obscure project from Marvel Studios to date, Guardians of the Galaxy attempts to not only take the Marvel Cinematic Universe into space, but aims to do so with several sets of all-new heroes and villains and an all-new cast. Having seen the teaser footage at Comic-Con and having read all of the comics writer-director James Gunn is drawing inspiration from, we’re pumped that Marvel is taking a chance on this property.

-

1. Godzilla

Godzilla Most Anticipated Movies 2014 570x285 Screen Rants 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2014

Release Date: May 16, 2014
Director: Gareth Edwards
Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins

Two years in a row, Warner Bros and Legendary stole the show at Comic-Con with footage for the reboot of Godzilla, and with an all-star cast and amazing special effects – not to mention a variety of monsters for Godzilla to battle – we’re most excited about the return of Godzilla to the big screen. The official Godzilla trailer helped reinforce our anticipation.

Honorable Mentions

Early on in 2013 films including Mad Max: Fury Road and Fast & Furious 7 would have easily made Screen Rant’s list of most anticipated movies of 2014 but both have been delayed into the epic release schedule of 2015 – a list which at first glance is even more impressive than what’s coming in 2014.

Still, despite listing our top 20 films here, we began with a list several times as large. It’s never an easy process removing a film from these lists, but it must be done and we wanted to name a few special outliers that we’re excited about but that didn’t quite make the top 20.

Ride Along (January 17, 2014) – one of our favorite funnymen Kevin Hart gets a lead role alongside Ice Cube in Ride Along, one of the few films in January worth getting excited about.

RoboCop (February 12, 2014) – taking a weak release date in 2014 after a delay, RoboCop has much to overcome in addition to the ’80s remake stigma, but what we’ve seen in footage, the trailers and cast so far has successfully managed to pique our interest against all odds.

Veronica Mars (March 14, 2014) – The wonderful but short-lived TV series starring Kristen Bell gets a film adaptation thanks to the power of fans and the Kickstarter crowdfunding service.

Jupiter Ascending (July 18, 2014) - Andy Wachowski & Lana Wachowski - and their visual eyes – take a key summer weekend to take moviegoers into an interesting future where humans are the lower class and Channing Tatum plays a genetically engineered super soldier on a mission to save Mila Kunis, the destined savior of humanity.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (August 22, 2014) – we’ve yet to see a trailer, but the sequel too-long-in-the-making brings back much of the original cast along with its signature black-and-white visual style for another Hard R set of intertwining stories.

These are just our picks so make sure to tell us what movies you’re getting ready to geek out about in 2014!

  1. Honorable mention

    The Neighbors
    Dumb and Dumber Too
    Into the Woods
    Gone Girl
    Monuments Men

  2. You’re looking forward to Captain America over Interstellar? Lol, you have some interesting taste.

    • @Jenn, You might be surprised that many on this site feel different than you. I am also more excited for Captain America WS over Intersteller.

Part of the reason is because we don’t know enough about Intersteller. It has not had that much publicity yet.

Plus, not sure we can compare the 2 films. Different types of movies Superhero spy thriller vs. Sci-Fi outerspace film.

    • Then I think MANY of us have interesting taste…

  3. Godzilla,
    Ninja Turtles,
    Dumb & Dumber 2,

my most anticipated, i just wish we were getting a Dredd 2 also.

    • If Dredd 2 were happening, it would definitely be on the list!

I hope one day it can!

  4. The Raid: Berandal
    TASM 2
    Transformers 4
    XMEN DOFP
    TMNT

  5. I’m a big fan of the Nolan brothers,so ‘Intersteller’ is definetly on my list along with ‘X-Men:DoFP’,’Guardians of the Galaxy’and ‘Captain America:TWS’,but my most anticipated by far is the return of the big OG,’GODZILLA’,that is my number 1.

  6. I’m fine with the top 5, but ranking Transformers 4 over the TASM 2? That’s unforgivable.

  7. Strike Transformers from the list completely and add in 300: Rise of an Empire! Are you kiddin’ SR?! Am I the only one who thinks the trailer looks epic? I’m fine with that! Or did it get pushed back beyond 2014? I don’t believe so… I agree with the rest of the list 100% though :) except also, maybe, perhaps, possibly TMNT. It has Megan Fox in it and I haven’t seen anything for it. Can’t quite call it anticipated.

  8. I agree with this list 100%. I am really hoping TASM 2 makes it worth Spidey not being in The Avengers.

  9. INTERSTELLAR at #5??? ROTFL!

  10. My most anticipated are:
The Hobbit: There and Back Again
    X-Men: Days of Future Past
How To Train Your Dragon 2
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1
    and The Amazing Spider-Man 2

  11. 1. The Amazing Spiderman 2
    2. Godzilla
    3. 22 Jump Street
    4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    5. Interstellar
    6. Monuments Men
    7. Transcendence
    8. Robocop
    9. The Interview
    10. TMNT

  12. I’m very surprised anybody is looking forward to the new Transformers. Those movies are absolutely awful. I can understand why people might of thought the first one was alright but those sequels,, come one.

I know the last one prob made a billion dollars but I just thought people would of been smart enough after that one to go, nope, that’s enough of that nonsense,

ah well different opinions I suppose

    • That’s the life of Transformers fans (who can accept change). I just think people should support it; if this one is successful (it no doubt will be), we’ll finally get Bay and crew out and another team in for 5 and 6 to make a constructed Transformers film.

    • I thought Transformers 1 was amazing. (yes it had some flaws)

Part 2 was fun but not great

Part 3 was fun but not great

  13. Yes for Godzilla! Please, please, please be good.

I’m also awaiting a little thriller called Jessabelle, out at the end of summer.

  14. I think it’s just me looking at the comments on here, but can someone come up with something original, rather than prequels, sequels, and remakes, revamping of comics for the screen? Most of the films you have in the top 20 are basically children’s films. Is it just me?

    • Godzilla is THANKFULLY not a sequel to that HORRIBLE film TriStar made, it’s not a sequel either, the movie is a reboot, and it’s a reboot that stays faithful to the original source material, and Godzilla has been rebooted into different continuities, so you can expect something original in this new movie.

      • “it’s not a sequel either” Sorry, I meant “remake”, “it’s not a remake either”.

  15. MARVEL movies – Comic book genre done to death. That doesn’t mean it’s terrible, though.
TMNT – If Michael Bay’s name is in this project, then I’m not buying a ticket.
Need For Speed – Cars racing, big deal.
Hunger Games – Not that interesting.
LEGO – Not bad, but there’s something about the protagonist that I don’t like.
Dragons 2 – I liked the first one, so I’ll go see this one as well.
Planet of the Apes 2 – Though the story of how monkeys took over the world is interesting, it’s not enough to suck me into the movie.
Transformers 4 – Michael Bay sucks. Call me when Transformers gets rebooted and is directed by someone else.

GODZILLA – Hands down my most anticipated film in all of 2014, and will definitely wipe my mind off of that disrespectful and unfaithful 1998 garbage TriStar and Emmerich carelessly made 15 years ago. Guys, we need more American Kaiju films.

    • hi luis,
why do you think MB(Michael bay) sucks? he is a really smart(and rich) movie maker, he knows what most people like/want…escapism!!! I appreciate you have a different opinion than me but it doesn’t mean what I like is bad it just means you don’t like it so please stop saying that something you hate “sucks” because it isn’t true!! you just don’t like it. if you want to continue this discussion your more than welcome to email me. thanks for reading :)

      • Thank you for stating the truth. People fail to realize the reason Michael’s movies are immensely popular is because he makes films people want to see. Sporadically, people like to view films that allow them to escape from reality. I could justify his Transformers films all day long.

  16. 300 Rise of an Empire

  17. ok people enough with badmouthing transformers!! we get some of you don’t like it but if you don’t have something good to say then don’t say anything because it makes people that adore it (like me) feel bad!! some people go to the movies to escape real life so just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean its bad it just means people have different opinions

    • What do you mean “we”? I think you may be in the minority here. And I think when people say something “sucks,” what they’re really saying is “I didn’t like that.” Try to control your level of offense when other people disagree with your personal tastes. We’re all adults here. No one’s trying to make you feel bad.

    • I am so glad to see another person on Screen Rant who loves Transformers like me. Though, I agree with Kevin. Let’s just try to keep our offense level down and revel in the awesomeness by ourselves, regardless of what others say.

  18. My order(huge superhero movie fan! Both Marvel and DC).

1). Captain America 2(the winter soldier)

2). Transformers(dinobots put over the top for me. Can’t wait!)

3). Guardians of Galaxy(nebula, korath, ronan, collector, pressence of thanos= WIN!)

    4). XMEN DOFP-(Bishop,sentinels,Warpath,Iceman,Kitty Pryde= WIN!)

5). Dawn of Planet of the Apes-(1st one was so outstanding! Can’t wait to see next one!

  19. @LouisFernandez- Your nuts if you haven’t given Rise of the planet of the Apes a try before judging. I wasen’t expecting much either and was blown away with the chilling mood the movie put in the air. It was just so well done, and disturbing, but in a good way. You found yourself rooting for the apes but feeling guilty for doing so at one second, and now it looks like were gonna plunge back into rooting for the humans in the next one! Its just a roller coster of emotions! Its outstanding movie making! To be honest , i should have that higher then 5th on my list. I’m talking possibly number 1 for me!

    • I agree with your list 1000% massmoviefan :)

  20. I guess no one else is excited about Divergent???
Spider Man 2 should be decent, and i can’t wait for Captain America and HTTYDragon2. If you couldn’t tell, I’m a superhero/disney and book fanatic. ← does that even make sense????

    • Divergent is going to be the best movie ever and it is the lack of readers which has not allowed it to make this list. Those who have read it are going crazy, I can tell you that.

  21. I think there is about 5 movies on that list I am looking forward to. I really don’t see how movies like the expendables 3, Need for speed, TMNT, and Transformers 4 could be more anticipated than Sin City 2.

The expendables series so far have yet to make even a decent movie. While movies like Jack Ryan, TMNT, or Need for Speed might end up being good, very few are anxiously awaiting their arrival.

  22. Why are all these undoubtedly mediocre comic-book movies leading this list? For every “Dark Knight” comics produce we get about 20 who cares “The Hulk” snooze fests. Nolan’s sci-fi piece and the follow up to Rise of Planet of the Apes are easily my look forward to movies

  23. I really like reading this type of article, and what amazes me… is that many entertainment sites are currently sharing similar set of most anticipated list. That means, these movies definitely hit their hype to many people at the similar levels.

As for me, I would definitely add honorable mentions:
    - Into the Woods/Annie: sounds like it’s gonna be the Les Mis of the year
    - The Grand Budapest Hotel: just saw the trailer… and it looks REALLY interesting
and for my top 5 (in random order):
    - Captain America: TWS
    - Guardians of the Galaxy
    - Noah
    - Rurouni Kenshin
    - Godzilla

  24. What about Mad Max????

    • Maybe next year since it’s releasing in 2015 :p

  25. My most anticipated, and probably only anticipated..

    1. Hobbit: TABA
    2. X-MEN: DOFP

    ….
    ….
    ….
    ….

    3. Cap America and TMNT

  26. Please Screen Rant, you have the power, if Godzilla is successful, pitch an epic crossover movie where Godzilla appears in the Pacific Rim universe, being a local monster, causing panic, but eventually helps the humans against a newly formed assault from the aliens who created the Kaiju. Godzilla and Jaegers against a Kaiju force! Make it happen! :)

    • I’m doing my best!

  27. Am I the only one who wants to see Divergent??

    • I’ll determine that when it comes closer to release

  28. Gojira big fan #1
Supa good time, make you feel nice, happy ya?

  29. It’s crazy to me to see Need for Speed and Jack Ryan on this list…wow!

Here are some of my most anticipated:

    Gone Girl
    Hobbit
    Interstellar
    Inherent Vice
    Fury
    Only Lovers Left Alive
    Foxcatcher
    Noah
    Enemy
    Edge of Tomorrow
    Hunger Games
    Godzilla
