As we come to the end of 2009, it’s time to look forward and put together our list of our most anticipated movies of 2010.

Last year could have been worse – 5 of our 10 most anticipated movies of 2009 turned out to live up to our expectations (including Watchmen, Up, and Star Trek), while the other five ranged from mediocre (Public Enemies) to downright disappointing (Terminator Salvation, Wolverine, Transformers 2). Of course “most anticipated” does not necessarily mean “movies we think are going to be awesome” – it’s “movies we hope are going to be awesome.”

This year the task was made a lot easier thanks to our senior editor Kofi Outlaw putting together Screen Rant’s 2010 movie preview, giving us a one-stop list from which to gather the biggies. While last year was a group effort, this year I’ve decided to pull rank and come up with the list myself, with some fine tuning help from editors Kofi and Rob Keyes.

So, without further delay…

Screen Rant’s 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2010:

20. The Green Hornet – December 22

Green Hornet made it onto the list just on morbid curiosity. I’m a big fan of the 60s TV series and was hoping to see a serious take on it on the big screen. However the production has not been smooth to say the least with apparent differences of opinion between Seth Rogen, director Michael Gondry and Stephen Chow (who eventually left the production altogether), production delays, script changes, etc. We’ll see what the final product looks like at the end of 2010.

19. Edge of Darkness – January 29

An older Mel Gibson as a father set on avenging the death of his daughter? Consider my ticket purchased and my seat reserved.

18. The Last Airbender – July 2

M. Night Shyamalan has been a victim of his own success (and his ego) with each of his films getting pretty much worse than the one that came before. However here he will be tackling something completely different from anything he has ever done before, and based on the one trailer we’ve seen so far it looks like it may turn out to be impressive. We’ll see.

17. The Wolfman – February 12

Benicio del Toro is a great actor and I’m looking forward to seeing him as the tortured soul cursed by the, uh, curse of the werewolf. It looks like they’ll be trying to do as much as they can with practical visual effects (although I’m sure there will be CGI as well) and that suits this film.

16. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – May 28

Is this going to be any good? I have no idea – but it looks like a helluva production. And Jake Gyllenhaal as a buffed out action hero? Curiosity factor alone is enough to put this on the list.

15. The Book of Eli – January 15

Denzel Washington as a righteous, post-apocalyptic bad-ass? Check. Gary Oldman as the bad guy? Check. A trailer that emphasizes both of those to utter awesomeness? Check. See you there.

14. Robin Hood – May 14

While some were disappointed (myself included) that director Ridley Scott decided to drop a couple of unique concepts for the story from the final product (Russell Crowe playing both Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham, the sheriff as the good guy and Robin as the villain), this still looks like a great, reality-based update of the story.

13. Alice In Wonderland – March 5

If there was ever a film that was suited to the twisted vision of Tim Burton, this is it. I’m not the biggest Burton fan and some of what I’ve seen in the trailer doesn’t quite work for me (the Red Queen’s head is so huge it looks cartoonish), but overall this is bound to be a feast for the senses and probably the closest a screen version will get to the source material.

12. A Nightmare On Elm Street – April 30

The original Nightmare on Elm Street is a horror classic and we’re all curious to see how this reboot/remake turns out. From what has been shown it seems like they may tone down the humor and dial up some of the more realistic aspects of the story. Really looking forward to Jackie Earle Haley’s take on Freddy Krueger.

11. The A-Team – June 11

With some interesting casting choices (Liam Neeson as “Hannibal” Smith, Bradley Cooper from The Hangover and Sharlto Copley from District 9) and director Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) behind the camera, this could turn out to be a fun hat-tip to the original series.

  1. No love for Machete?

  2. I just hope Ray Stevenson doesn’t die right in the beginning of Book of Eli, lol.

  3. Sequels and Remakes. Woo Hoo.

And why is Nightmare On Elm Street on here? Are you having a giraffe?

  4. Daybreakers!A good sci-fi vampire film .

  5. There really are some awesome movies coming out for 2010, i think one of the best ones that i will like is the A – team lol that was my favourite tv show when i was a kid. It always amazed me though how 5 adults could build a tank, break out of a steel locked cell and shoot all the badies using nothing more than a match box a shoe lace and a comb lol

it does make me laugh looking back

    nice post though

    will come back more often

  6. two that weren’t in your list (unless I missed them) and which *I* at least am very much looking forward to are Daybreakers and Legion (I’s a sucker for those religious topic films, even if I’m more of an agnostic than anything).

  7. Brace for Impact!

2010 is gonna suck, and these movie are mostly crap as well.

  8. Damn, someone is full of negative energy! lol :-P

  9. I will see precisely 7 of those at the cinema, the rest look boring as hell.

  10. This site is tops! I love your reviews and assessments. This is one of them. Very informative and useful. I might not watch some though- Robin Hood for one. I hate distortion of history/legends (eg Da Vinci Code etc)- makes me wonder if my own story (if I have one worth telling) would not be distorted decades or centuries after my death. Disturbing. Robin Hood was my childhood hero and the message behind his tale is positive. Help the poor with your wealth-don’t be greedy. Granted a legend is not necessarily the truth but what we’re being offered right now has no message to offer whatsoever.

That said, Expendables would be nostalgic. Not that I really miss the era when stars were hailed more than actors and acting talent and good script was a luxury, but just seeing the guys that made my childhood days all in a movie and how they’ve aged… real deep.

Shellhead is tops tho! Clash of Titans remake? About time. The special FX in the original hurts the eyes now despite the good script. Worth a remake.

    Nice one.

  11. Hey gang, I’ve updated this article with a poll where you can vote for the movies you’re most looking forward to in 2010.

  12. Voyage of the Dawn Treader is coming out in 2010?? How did I not know this??? That’s like my favourite of the Chronicles of Narnia (perhaps second to the Last Battle). I’m looking forward to that waaaaay more than Iron Man 2, which I am looking forward to and have been siunce watching Iron Man. However, I must say that, given the choice, I’d see Voyage of the Dawn Treader before Iron Man 2.

  13. How could ‘Red Dawn’ not make the list?!?

  14. @MAKsys

I do have Red Dawn in the runners up list. I’m just not sure if they’re going to stay true to the vibe of the original on that one.

  15. @claude

  16. no Scott Pilgrim loves?

  17. I agree with most of the choices on the list. I’m definitely looking forward to “legion”, “Clash of The Titans”, & “solomon Kane”; I’m a sucker for that stuff! I was really surprised at how much I was laughing, and coudln’t stop smiling while watching the footage for “The Expendables”. I felt like a kid again watching it. I was slightly disappointed to see Lundgren as a bad guy; hopefully we hear him tell Stallone, “I will break you”…LOL.

  18. @dancingpolkabear
LOL… Good call! I forgot about “machete”. That cast is too strang to pass up, & I love the old grindhouse look that Rodriguez has been working with. There is an appealing quality, to me, of those old exploitation films that have the cracks & slightly off colors.

  19. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is sure to be awesome. That (and Prince of Persia, maybe Iron Man 2) are the only films in this list that look half-decent.

And Kick *** #2? I don’t think so. That movie is sure to be a flop.

  20. I enjoyed Watchmen, but not enough to say it lived up to my expectations. It would have went on my disappointing list with Transformers 2, another movie I enjoyed, but neither one lived up to their hype. Of course I’m one who thought that both 2012 and Terminator Salvation were the 2 most underrated movies from last year, so what do I know?

  21. Wow 2010 is not looking “Epic” at all

  22. Machette wasnt the Grindhouse movie I wanted, the werewolves of the SS looked way more fun!

  23. As Cronicas de Narnia: O Peregrino da Alvorada. Esperamos com alegria a continuação deste filme tão unico, magico e inspirador para todas as pessoas. Parabéns a Walden Midia e a Fox

  24. Tron Legacy is probably the fil I'm looking forward to the most this year. Just a shame I have to wait until December for it. At least there are a few beauties to keep me entertained until then, Iron Man 2, The A-Team, Toy Story 3. Kick-Ass looks better with each trailer or exclusive I see. 2012 also looks like it'll be a good year, Star Trek 2, Captain America and with the recent announcement of a Spider-Man reboot I'm intruiged.

  25. Toy Story 3 by a mile, then Iron Man 2 (I really enjoyed the first one. Although I initially liked The Dark Knight more, now there are many things that point to me liking Iron Man more.). After these, maybe Inception or Shutter Island, they look interesting. I'll have to wait to see footage of The Dawn Treader before I'm interested in that (I read the book and enjoyed it, perhaps more than the other Narnia books, but the last film was crappy). All in all, if I could only see one new film this year, it would be Toy Story 3. The first two were great, and Pixar's other films have been great, too (even though Cars was the weakest, it was still pretty enjoyable).

  26. To make another note,I kind of want to see Deathly Hallows as well. I used to be a BIG Harry Potter fan, even when the Deathly Hallows book came out. I'm MUCH less of a Harry Potter fan than I used to be (I know this because I wouldn't have forgotten to mention it on my most anticipated list if I was). I thought the 6th one was all right, but not all that great. Some in me will want to see this, though, especially since it's a Part I.

  27. Anticipated movies
    no particular order
The A-Team (There Is No Plan B )
    Clash Of the Titans
    Iron Man 2
    Nightmare on Elm Street
    Wolf Man
    Narnia 3
    TRON Legacy
    Robin Hood
    Should be a blockbuster year
though not as big as 2011 will be.

  28. I heard that Robert Downey Jr. and Beyonce were doing a remake of ” A Star is Born” also heard they were doing a remake of “True Grit” with Matt Damon. Has anyone else heard this?

  29. Nightmare on Elm Street? One of the first horror films i watched as a kid, who's in it??
