Despite launching with 24 playable combatants (plus Goro as a pre-order bonus) back in April, dedicated fans couldn’t wait to get their hands on the additional fighters in Mortal Kombat X’s first wave of four downloadable characters, available early via the Kombat Pack. Every character has three noticeably different fighting style variations to master – which means the game offers plenty of replay value on its own – but the desire to play as even more combatants is a strong one. For the first batch of new characters, developer NetherRealm Studios selected Friday the 13th slasher icon Jason Voorhees, the extraterrestrial hunter Predator, and two individuals from previous MK games; Tremor and Tanya.
The first downloadable fighter in the pack, Jason Voorhees, was released in early May and his three variations – slasher, relentless, and unstoppable – offer completely different ways to utilize the character. The next DLC fighter, Tanya, now has her first gameplay trailer which showcases parts of her brutal X-ray attack, alongside several combos and special moves. And it ends with a look at one of her violent fatalities.
The Edenian known as Tanya made her first appearance in 1997’s Mortal Kombat 4 and she has appeared in several other installments since. In Mortal Kombat X’s story mode, Tanya sides with Mileena and Rain in their battle against Outworld’s Emperior, Kotal Kahn. She is unable to defeat the ruler in direct combat, but she later pummels the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Cassie Cage. D’Vorah – one of Mortal Kombat X’s new characters – later defeats Tanya and prepares to take her life, but it’s Cassie who convinces D’Vorah to spare her.
Unlike Jason Voorhees, Tanya’s gameplay reveal emphasizes her swift and agile style. Her variety of melee and projectile weapons – presumably from different variations – position her as formidable at any distance for elite players. Plus, the revealed fatality is delightfully over-the-top. One can only wonder whether she’ll crush her opponent’s heart or if she’ll simply hold it as it stops beating. Additionally, it’s great to see she has unique dialogue with opposing character – something Voorhees lacked because he doesn’t speak and many of the reactions from other fighters were very limited.
In addition to Tanya, “Klassic Pack 1” will also be available tomorrow for download. This skin pack includes the original costumes from the first Mortal Kombat game for Liu Kang, Kano, and Sonya. It’s unclear how many more editions of the Klassic Pack are planned, but one can only hope they’ll eventually release all of the characters’ original costumes.
Tanya will be first available for Kombat Pack purchasers on June 2, 2015. The character DLC will be individually available on June 9, 2015 for $4.99 and the skin pack will be $3.99. There’s no word yet on Predator’s release date.
Mortal Kombat X is available on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
