Director Kevin Tancharoen is hard at work shooting his Mortal Kombat live-action shorts, which will premiere on the Web this spring in accordance with the release of the new Mortal Kombat video game.

We recently learned some casting news about the Mortal Kombat live-action digital new media series, but have been waiting to see anything that could fill us in on how these new webisodes will tie to the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film by Tancharoen, which kicked off this whole MK live-action revival.

Today we have our first promotional materials for Mortal Kombat, sent to the Web as a gift from Kevin Tancharoen via his official Twitter account. Tancharoen posted three images from the set of Mortal Kombat: one of the pics is of fan-favorite Scorpion in an ominous scene set in a wintery forest (you just know a fight is about to jump off!); the other two pics feature a look at Scorpion’s new spear-o-death, and a look at a female character covered in blue liquid, which Tancharoen released with the somewhat vague caption, “Blue is not Kitana.” Should we take it that the character’s name is, in fact, “Blue” then?

At any rate, have a look at the full gallery of Mortal Kombat pics released by Tancharoen below. Click on any pic twice for a bigger version:

If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to watch the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film that inspired this new live-action digital new media series.

Some fans were worried early on that the gritty and realistic approach to the MK mythos seen in Rebirth would rob the franchise of its signature mystical/supernatural elements. Despite the fact that Tancharoen himself already promised fans that his Mortal Kombat will stay true to its origins, the sight of Scorpion in full ninja garb, complete with spear-o-death, should be a pretty solid indicator that this apple won’t be falling too far from the tree.

Mortal Kombat is currently shooting in Vancouver and is expected to start premiering around April. What did you think of the pics?

  1. Great pics…. looking forward to this. I thought the short was very entertaining and very well did.

  2. Looks good, cant wait. Loved the short.

  3. I’d love to see Zack Snyder do a Mortal Kombat movie. Why not? He’s got a strong relationship with Warner Bros. and action/visuals are his specialty.

    • I think his style would be perfect for Mortal Kombat.

I’m loving the look of Scorpion.

    • Zack Snyder would be great for MK movie.

Rob heres a question i have not seen any article about the new “Attack the Block” trailer.

    • That would be awesome. Snyder’s action sequences and fight scenes in Watchmen and 300 were pretty brilliant, showing long, zoomed out shots where you could tell exactly what was going on.

I hate the quick, spastic cuts that Tancheron used in the fight scenes. I know it’s the new fad in movies but doesn’t make it good.

      • Agreeed!

    • Snyder could make a fatality move looks exciting :D

  4. Not digging it. Scorpion looks like a hobo and his spear looks like something a hobo would make out of a shoelace and a piece of shrapnel. Not intimidating, not “badass”, not “cool” at all.

    Bah

    • Eh, Scorpion looks a bit dull. And his spear is really more like a dagger on a rope, not like that letter opener on a string.. Love the Snyder idea mentioned below though.

  5. def looking forward to this. does anyone know how many episodes there will be and how long will each will last for ?

  6. the Mortal Kombat webseries will not have any link to MK: Rebirth. only the directing style from Kevin Tancharoen will be the same. Mortal Kombat webseries will be linked to the new MK game release. all the backstory of these characters in this series will be based around the game characters story that everyone knows. all this was confirm on the synopsis that WB release.

    • where did you see this? obiously it has some sort of connection because in the short scorpion was an assassain and the spear didnt come out of his hand (like in the image above) and its already been confirmed on comingsoon and screen rant that michael jai white is coming back as jax and so is the same actor thats playing scorpion i cant remmber his name. i think they might be changing up costume designs and actors to tie more into the actualy M universe but im pretty sure this viral videos are in the same continuity of MK rebirth…

      • scorpion was always a assassain have u even played the game. the spare never came out scorpion hands in the video game also. that only happen in the first Mortal Kombat movie not the game. Mortal Kombat webseries will have the same actors from Mortal Kombat: Rebirth but they wont be no connection to each other. only they using the same actors and director. this webseries story will be closely linked to the video game.

        heres the synopsis
        http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/23349

    • Uh no. How would that be possible since both Michael jai White and Jeri Ryan are both reprising the roles of Jax and Sonja Blade?

      • Michael jai White and Jeri Ryan will play the same characters but it wont be the same story from MK Rebirth. it will be closer to the video game character counterpart not Rebirth universe.

  7. I almost certain this web-series will surpass the original Mortal Kombat movies by far.

  8. looks pretty dang good, i hope to see kanoe, sub zero, goro, reptile, and the rest from mk 1, and 2 .

  9. Not to pick nits here but it’s hard to tell a lot from such a tiny image. At least they have the kunai on rope correct instead of some silly creature that comes out of his hand. The question now becomes….will Scorpion have teleport?

“Tancharoen himself already promised fans that his Mortal Kombat will stay true to its origins”

Actually that boat kind of already sailed on this comment the moment he turned Reptile into a cannibal with a severe skin condition and Baraka into a psychopath that was into body modification.

    • the ‘mysticism’ of the games won’t be as great as it was in the old (and terrible) movies the director said it himself that its going to be a more grounded take on the franchise, which imo is great/suitable.

      • “grounded” and “mysticism” don’t really go together well…where’s the mysticism of reptile being a cannibal with a skin disease? it’s all realism.

  10. This shopuld be at the theater a REAL film…

    • I really do hate calling cinemas “theaters”.

  11. Is that a spear? It looks more like an arrow.

Regardlesss, if these are anything like the short film, I’ll be there.

    • It’s a Japanese weapon called a Kunai (google it) with a tether rope attached, just like Scorpion from the original game.

  12. Cool stuff love your Freddy gooker game ps.beat it all already
