Mortal Kombat Legacy Clip First Mortal Kombat: Legacy Web Series Clip & Other Details

As predicted, with the release of the new Mortal Kombat video game less than two weeks away, news surrounding the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat web series (now titled Mortal Kombat: Legacy) has started dropping in quick succession.

Yesterday, we reported that the web series would debut on April 12th, one week prior to the new game, and today we’re getting our first look at director Kevin Tancharoen’s Mortal Kombat: Legacy in action – in the form of a minute long clip.

While Tancharoen is holding back on certain fan-favorite ninjas, assassins, and any “Outworld” affiliates, the clip is still an exciting sneak peek at the upcoming series – featuring Michael Jai White as Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs duking it out with Darren Shahlavi as Kano before either of them received iconic cybernetic upgrades.

Check out the leaked clip below:

Despite plenty of set photos, there’s still been a lot of speculation regarding the balance Tancharoen would ultimately present in the web series – between the gritty real-world tone of his Mortal Kombat: Rebirth shortfilm and the fantasy-based video game plotline.

The clip may not put the fantasy versus reality balance debate to rest, or feature the fan-favorite characters some might have hoped for, but the debut is certainly encouraging – with plenty of solid physical action between the characters (not to mention Kano’s intriguing lack of a metal face-plate/glowing red eye). Could the explosion we see at the end of the clip cause injury to both characters – requiring Jax to don bionic armor-plating on his arms and Kano to augment his own face with an iconic metal graft?

Check out highlights from Warner Bros.’ press release below:

  1. Fail.

    • why do you say so? i liked it

      • The hand to hand choreography wasnt very good, and michael jai white has always ruined movies for me. Its just a matter of personal opinion. Im still have hopes for the characters like scorpion and subzero. I just dont want this to go from one fight to the next with little plot.

        • its almost as if you’ve never seen a martial arts movie before. the choreography was spot on and focused on the action, topped with the almost perfect editing (cuts etc) it makes for a great fight scene.

MJW is one of the most underrated martial artists/actors, simply b/c people just think of him as a muscle head. he has never had a significant enough role to showcase his real potential (he was the main character of blood and bone yet hardly said anything).

also, the mini series is a tie in to the new game coming out, so it will probably focus on characters origins etc. his short movie is something totally different (most the cast in that is different to).

          • I did say its a matter of opinion right? i never said anything about his skills as a martial artist. I dont like his acting, i thought he was at his best in Black Dynamite hah. He honestly ruined spawn for me. and ive seen plenty of action films and my favorite choreography comes from ong bak that to me is amazing. sorry if my opinion doesnt agree with yours.

            • Spawn wasn’t his fault mate…it was the writing

            • Ong Bak and Tony Jaa Has some of the best fight choreography of any Martial Arts films today.

        • AGREE

          • AGREE WITH JWALKA, JAI is one of the best martial arts actor yet underrated. SPAWN is a bad movie because of script writers, director and the ones who produced it not Jai White.

            • yep :)

  2. Looks pretty good cant wait to see the whole thing

  3. Can’t wait. I love Mortal Kombat and this looks great.

  4. I thought this looked great. i cannot wait much longer for this. also i liked how when the explosive was fired they both paused as if they were think OH S***

  5. if its mortal kombat its good!! lol cant wait for this!!

  6. there always seems to be a conveniently placed gun rack near by when you need it ;)
jokes aside the choreography was great and after finding out that this is reltaed to the game and not the short he made a while back, i’m all god and up to date RE realism etc of this series.

  7. Kinda looking forward to it now – will you have a link posted for the whole series run?

  8. Man…this looks great. I can not wait to see the series. This does look like how Kano and Jax get there bionic parts. Cool.

  9. Lame

  10. Meh

  11. htf can people rip on a 1min clip that showcased nothing but choreography. stop being so cynical and wait for the damn episodes before crying like little nostalgic girls.

  12. Thought it was a good little taste. I’m intrigued, which is where I feel like I should be right now. Will be watching on Tuesday to see what the finished product looks like.

  13. Um. Isn’t Mortal Combat a fantasy and Martial Arts type story? This just looks like your average cops vs bad guy gun battle with a small amount of hand to hand.

    • its a prelude to the game, hence why its called legacy – it tells the back story of most the main characters and is somewhat of a lead up to the MK: rebirth movie.

  14. Nice over use of the same sound effects.

  15. Awe MAN, this looks like the Ca-Ca I feared it would be. Well I didn’t expect a web series to be taken seriously so no harm, I’m embarrassed for those who think this looks any good.
I’m guessing some of you are also fans of:
    Blade Trinity
    Van Hellsing
    -pfft! What happened to standards?

  16. I’d say the target audience for this ranges from 12 years to 15, you know, fans of the ‘Saw’ films.

    • ‘fans of the saw film’ hehe your basing your pathetic assumption on 1min worth of footage, i think your the one who need ot grow up ;)

  17. So Kano grabs a gun and then tries to club Jax with it. He practically hands it over to Jax.

  18. I don’t know if this was the best clip to generate buzz with. It was your run of the mill knife fight scene that I have seen in literally 100+ other movies/TV shows.

My belief though is that scene will be what “creates” the Kano and Jax we know. Kano will suffer some horrid head injury which requires an eye implant (and he will hopefully keep the shaved head from the operation) and Jax will lose both his arms and need prosthetic ones.

    • EXACTLY, that’s the whole point of both the scene and the tv series, i’m glad someone here is on the right page ;)
i heard each episode will focus on a couple of the main characters (more then likely the ones related to one another like jax, kano and sonya).

  19. Considering how great the short film was, this looks disappointing, from the leaked pics it looks nothing like it, the gritty real world tone was a chance to show off these cool characters but in a new way. This looks average at best

    • its not really related to the short, its more of a tie in to the game ai think, and if it isn’t its just to establish how the characters become who they are (in this case how kano gets the metal plate and how jaz gets the cyber arms).

wait for the 1st episode to hit the net then criticise. also keep in mind that he does have to explain quite a few chars within 10 episodes so he doesn’t have all the time in the world to screw around with in detail back stories etc..

  20. Yeah I think I can smell crap without having to physically see it with my eyes. Try wiping it out of your eyes and you might clearly see the effort or lack thereof in this one minute clip, it’s atrocious. The short film isn’t that great ether. Removing the magic and mysticism from MK and basing the characters in a realistic world is a bad move. Sounds to me like there are some fanboys out there Desperately clawing at any hint of life left in the long forgotten franchise, it’s something you’ll learn to get over when you’re older.
-The only live action Mortal Kombat worth anything was the commercial for MK:2 back in the days, now That was quality.

    • its people like you that ruin creativity and end up forcing studios to reboot/remake and to churn out prequels and sequels to keep trash like you happy. here’s a point of advice: be more sceptical instead of bashing on something without even watching a full length feature on it (in this case an episode). if you think you’re right in basing your assumption on a 1min clip, then you clearly have no clue.

      • Very, very well said.

  21. Reserving judgement until the full clip appears – But hey, At least it can’t be worse than *shudders* Mortal Kombat Anhilation…….can it?

  22. No, sorry. I just re watched the clip man, the production value reeks of a channel 5 television series and the choreography is weak. There’s no point in arguing dude, agree to disagree.

  23. The first 7 minute short was AMAZING. This? Not so much. Sure, it’s just a teaser, but the fighting in it is catastrophic. Not to mention the ’80s punch sounds. Which is, for today’s standards, lame.

I believe Kevin is a great director, with a great vision. Too bad the webseries doesn’t continue the real world setting.

  24. it looks lame. very old style of fighting scene. and it was dumb, using a gun to smash his face instead of pulling the trigger and shoot him (they were far away from each other!) very slow fighting scene too. but what do you expect from a web series?!? atleast make this a ‘smart’ web series.

  25. Michael Jai White should focus his energy on Black Dynamite 2. That dude has some serious comedy chops.

    “Freeze, turkeys!” LOL

  26. OK show us how to do it since you all can do it better apparently

    • Seriously everyone complaining about a 1 minute clip should just not watch the show and stop bitching. I mean how much are you guys going to end up PAYING to see this? nothing? so shut the hell up you know your going to end up watching it anyways. and if not do what ASphincterSaysWhat? said and “show us how to do it since you all can do it better apparently”.

      • I agree.
I’ve been hunting down every detail of this project since “Rebirth” premiered, and I’m way psyched.
Also you can’t judge a whole movie on 1 minute of it!
Making a few deductions, educated guesses, sure; but to bash it before you see it in its entirety is beyond foolish.

  27. Mortal Kombat is awesome so far! I just found a blog that’s giving out the preorder DLC for all the costumes, and the new Kenshi character DLC!

I just got my Reptile Klassic Kostume but I don’t know if there’s anymore keys left. If you want to check it out, here’s the site:
