From Game Rant:

Last summer, Screen Rant reported on news that a Mortal Kombat movie and in a few episodes of Mortal Kombat: Conquest, the TV series.

It seemed beyond strange that we had heard nothing about it and that if what he said was true, it would have been shooting a mere 2 months later. It likely would have been some low-budget straight-to-DVD flick. As I said then, perhaps that’s the only way to go after the terrible outing of the latest Street Fighter movie but either way, it didn't happen.

Fast forward to the present, and three weeks ago we found out that Warner Bros. would be moving forward with a Mortal Kombat franchise reboot to be written by Oren Uziel. That's all we knew about it until now, where we're hearing that the project is in (slight) danger due to some legal issues.

Threshold Entertainment Inc. filed the lawsuit yesterday against Warner Bros. to stop their production. The reason for this is that Threshold made a deal with Midway games back in the early 1990s for the rights to expand the franchise into other forms, most notably with two feature films. But they already made two movies, right? According to the lawsuit, Threshold made another more recent deal with Midway for a third franchise film and therein lies the issue at hand.

Warner Bros. figures they own the rights since they won all of Midway's properties when it fell Bankrupt a year ago but Threshold claims they own it because the bankruptcy court maintained its licenses as part of the sale agreement.

So, this will likely be settled with some damages being paid as Warner Bros. reportedly made no efforts to contact Threshold throughout this process. That will sure change after this and they can get back to work on this quality project.

Do you care about another Mortal Kombat movie or did Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and the previews for the Tekken flick destroy the future of fighting game movies?
