Mortal Kombat Rebirth Awesome New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits the Web [Updated]

Kevin Tancharoen, director of the Mortal Kombat Rebirth viral trailer has revealed the origins of the short film as well as the direction he’d take a feature length version – should he be given the chance. Check out the new details HERE.

Early this morning, a mysterious trailer for an unannounced Mortal Kombat project appeared on YouTube – posted under the title Mortal Kombat Rebirth.

The trailer is over seven minutes long and features high production values – including performances by Michael Jai White as Jackson “Jax” Briggs and Jeri Ryan as Sonya.

It’s unclear at this point whether the viral trailer will ultimately lead us to a new Mortal Kombat film or a new video game installment. However, given the real-world spin, I’d say we’re looking at a new film.

Check out the Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer after the jump:

Looks a bit too ambitious for a fan-made trailer, right?

You might remember that Warner Bros. was moving forward on a Mortal Kombat reboot – with writer Oren Uziel already attached to pen the screenplay. Though, shortly thereafter, Warner Bros. was sued by Threshold Entertainment, who apparently bought the rights to the third Mortal Kombat film installment – before Warner Bros. purchased Midway (and subsequently their IPs).

Reptile Mortal Kombat Rebirth Awesome New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits the Web [Updated]

Either way, it seems clear that someone is making a new Mortal Kombat film. The real-world angle of the trailer (which features Baraka as a self-mutilating serial killer and Reptile suffering from a genetic disorder) fits the recent film-making trend of wooing audiences with less-fantasy driven premises – focusing on grittier, more realistic, interpretations.

In addition, it’s difficult to imagine how this “realistic” vision of Mortal Kombat could possibly translate into an enjoyable gameplay experience – given that the franchise was built on bicycles kicks, thunder Gods, fireballs, alternate realms, and over-the-top fatalities. If Mortal Kombat Rebirth points to a video game – how could that video-game capitalize on previous Mortal Kombat games with such a straight-forward approach? Not to mention, how that straight-forward approach would pretty much castrate the game’s source mechanics.

Scorpion Mortal Kombat Rebirth Awesome New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits the Web [Updated]

Personally, after watching the trailer, I’m really hoping for a new Mortal Kombat film – a strange thing to say, considering the quality of most video game films. The rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero was one of the more compelling aspects of the Mortal Kombat mythology – and the Rebirth plot-line appears to put that rivalry front and center.

Regardless, one thing is clear – given the upcoming E3 conference in Los Angeles, we’ll certainly have more info soon as to which facet of the Mortal Kombat franchise will be getting a “rebirth.”

What do you think Mortal Kombat Rebirth is leading us to? What do you think of the new approach to the franchise?

  1. officialy hyped. awesome trailer

  2. IF this is to be a movie, it looks like its full of potential

  3. I hope it leads to a movie,Id def. Go see it! BTW this looks so much better than the other mortal kombats and I like how they make it more realistic and I’m assuming they do….

  4. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I like the real world element although the fantasy part always made the characters seem more mystical and powerful. Its also strange having Scorpion playing the lead role and not a bad guy.

  6. This literally had be gawking at my monitor. To start with it felt very first Resident Evil (the movie, which I’m actually a fan of). I think it has alot of the same smart, modern style. If the entire movie is like that 7 minutes then I think this could be a truly awesome flick.

  7. O’ be still me beating heart and before Barak rips it out.

I never thought I’d say it but this take on Mortal Kombat is unfreaking believable. Its a bit over gross with the eating flesh bit but it does look asweaome.

Its not a fan thing either, way too many known actors in teh thing to be fan made. This IS either a serious viral piece for a game that has a marketing budget unlike any other or, and I think this is more likley, it’s a short teaser piece to solict feedback on teh possability of a full blow movie reboot. remeber how they got some moeny to do a short test piece on a HALO film? I believe some studio did something like that and gave someone a million or a few million to put together thsi 7 minute teaser and see what type of hype/feedback it gets. if its picks up enough speed then they’ll green light a ful movie.

There is also teh chance it is actually pieces from a movie in porodcution because there are at least 3 actors in it that are known, have been in majr to semi major productions.

Sonya Blade = Jeri Ryan (7 from STARE TREK VOYAGER SERIES)

SCORPION = I can’t place him but this actor has been in some stuff along the lines of a Jet Li film or similiar; just can’t remeber where I have seen him before but someone on the screenrant boards will remeber I’m sure.

    • Scorpion is played by Donnie Yen.

    • holy s!@t you’re right, I knew the voice but that is White as Jacks. Jeri Ryan is obvious

  8. Hoping this is pointing to a film.

  9. See there you go, someone has already listed the actor playing Scorpio. I checked his IMDB bio and I swear I have seen him in somethiung else besides whats on the IMDB list.

  10. They have to make this happen. A much needed new flare to bring this back to live action and to be somewhat more believable. The trailer was sweet.

  11. Why the hell do they always kill Johnny Cage

    • it’s funny they kill Johnny Cage in the trailer. Given the ‘real world’ take on the franchise, and Cage was one of the few characters with a real world bio. hilarious

  12. Okay, keep Michael and Jeri and the guy playing Scorpion, and taking it in the direction of following Scorpion instead of Liu Kang is brave. . . and something that would definitely be exciting to see. My opinion is this needs to be made and released sometime soon!

  13. There are a lot of famous people to be a fanmade. Even Franck Ribery is in it playing reptile!! XD

  14. Wow!! That Reptile part is ridiculous and watching Johnny Cage get schooled by Baraka is awesome.

  15. Whats funny is both the Mortal Kombat movies were so corny, that the TV series suffered from it, even though I enjoyed it. This on the other hand totally makes up for it and I would be so excited if a movie was made with this style. Hopefully other fighting movies (Street Fighter, DOA, Tekken, etc…) will take a note from this and step up their story writing abilities.

  16. Wow !!!!! that looks AWESOME !!

I really enjoyed the first MK but was quite disappointed with MK2.
I think this looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the previous two.

I hope this turns out to be a new film , it looks really fun :)

  17. …. oh my god.

That looks freakin amazing. Really hoping this comes to be a full movie.

  18. Very good.

  19. wow that had to be a real movie or somtin that costed money for sure freakin sweet though

  20. AWESOME!!

  21. between this an the street fighter: legacy movie…i am officially optimistic that a decent video game fighter movie can be achieved! Go for it!

  22. Several sites are reporting that this is test footage for a film.

    But, daaaaaaaaaamn! Awesome!

  23. lol man Johnny Cage gets no love

  24. if this is a real movie johnny cage better not die

    • Given the darker tone of the film, I’m not sure where Johnny Cage would fit into it. The undercover agent thing works as a way of getting him into the film – but I’m not sure if it would actually be sustainable.

I’d guess that, if it is a film, that what happens in the trailer will happen in the final movie.

  25. I think it is a teaser made up of test footage; something to lure investors and interest. Nothing more.

  26. That has got to be one of the best trailer/teaser/tester that I have EVER seen!
Im a massive mortal kombat fan, and would usually HATE anything that strayed from the source material…but that trailer looks so mind blowingly good that I dont even care that they intend to ruin baraka and reptiles back story

    Color me excited

  27. this better be a movie cause it looks badass
