Mortal Kombat Rebirth Awesome New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits the Web [Updated]

Update:

Kevin Tancharoen, director of the Mortal Kombat Rebirth viral trailer has revealed the origins of the short film as well as the direction he’d take a feature length version – should he be given the chance. Check out the new details HERE.

Early this morning, a mysterious trailer for an unannounced Mortal Kombat project appeared on YouTube – posted under the title Mortal Kombat Rebirth.

The trailer is over seven minutes long and features high production values – including performances by Michael Jai White as Jackson “Jax” Briggs and Jeri Ryan as Sonya.

It’s unclear at this point whether the viral trailer will ultimately lead us to a new Mortal Kombat film or a new video game installment. However, given the real-world spin, I’d say we’re looking at a new film.

Check out the Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer after the jump:

Looks a bit too ambitious for a fan-made trailer, right?

You might remember that Warner Bros. was moving forward on a Mortal Kombat reboot – with writer Oren Uziel already attached to pen the screenplay. Though, shortly thereafter, Warner Bros. was sued by Threshold Entertainment, who apparently bought the rights to the third Mortal Kombat film installment – before Warner Bros. purchased Midway (and subsequently their IPs).

Reptile Mortal Kombat Rebirth Awesome New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits the Web [Updated]

Either way, it seems clear that someone is making a new Mortal Kombat film. The real-world angle of the trailer (which features Baraka as a self-mutilating serial killer and Reptile suffering from a genetic disorder) fits the recent film-making trend of wooing audiences with less-fantasy driven premises – focusing on grittier, more realistic, interpretations.

In addition, it’s difficult to imagine how this “realistic” vision of Mortal Kombat could possibly translate into an enjoyable gameplay experience – given that the franchise was built on bicycles kicks, thunder Gods, fireballs, alternate realms, and over-the-top fatalities. If Mortal Kombat Rebirth points to a video game – how could that video-game capitalize on previous Mortal Kombat games with such a straight-forward approach? Not to mention, how that straight-forward approach would pretty much castrate the game’s source mechanics.

Scorpion Mortal Kombat Rebirth Awesome New Mortal Kombat Trailer Hits the Web [Updated]

Personally, after watching the trailer, I’m really hoping for a new Mortal Kombat film – a strange thing to say, considering the quality of most video game films. The rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero was one of the more compelling aspects of the Mortal Kombat mythology – and the Rebirth plot-line appears to put that rivalry front and center.

Regardless, one thing is clear – given the upcoming E3 conference in Los Angeles, we’ll certainly have more info soon as to which facet of the Mortal Kombat franchise will be getting a “rebirth.”

What do you think Mortal Kombat Rebirth is leading us to? What do you think of the new approach to the franchise?

  1. I liked :

    the fact that Michael Jay White appears in it ;
    the idea of a remake ;

I disliked the “saw” feel with reptile and baraka .

among other character rewrites , Baraka was a Tarkatan in the Mortal kombat series… so it kind’a takes all the outer-realm feel out of the movie (and it remakes 80% percent of the story). If it’s gonna really come out , the script should be written with human characters on the Earth realm and the ones like Scorpion ,Sub-zero on the Outer-realm and Netherworld teritories.

on http://www.apple.com/trailers – there is no such trailer of an upcoming MK movie.

  2. Okay,I absolutely cannot believe Im making my first ever post on here about Mortal Kombat!
First off, I am a long time fan of Vics work and of this site. I feel I know each and every one of you! Numerous times I wanted to interject with my thoughts and feelings but declined… I was just content with reading the 3 to 4 pages of comments. What can I say, whether I agree or not,you are all amazing and have interesting opinions. But, being a writer for numerous years (one who has given up with proper punctuation I might add – as in apostrophes… those Damned apostrophes!) I do love a good rant, hence how I found this website many moons ago. It’s a great thing you got going here, almost as if everyone has a voice. Well, that is if that “said voice” doesnt call people obligatory, stereotypical, or racial; names or ignorantly argue with a member. But either way, I just wanted to say thank you for this wonderful web site. I have spent 3 to 4 hours a night at work reading just about every article! Now with that being said, lets kindly move on, shall we?

I must admit that I grew up a huge fan of the games and the first movie. Being the age of 32 places me right in that demographic (as well as unfortunate enough to love the techno soundtrack.) But screw it, the techno was part of the digital game in its own little way and a really good overall job was done for what they had to work with. The reason I state this is due to absolutely great video games that would carry over well to the big screen due to its plot. But lets face it guys, a tournament style game lacks substance, not to mention tournies arent even fought that way to begin with! (So wait, youre telling me there are 20 fighters and I have to fight them all in a row???? Really, we’re not abiding by pool tournament rules? Just me? … Christ I’m screwed.”

If you want to make a good video game movie, which I truly believe no one in hollywood does; there are simple guidelines you must follow. Action, Drama, Suspense, Boy gets girl, and a killer closing sequence that makes you glowon the inside but without giving all the secrets away for a sequel. Legacy of Kaine: Soul Reaver would make a beautiful film! Hell, it would make a beautiful trilogy! And this is coming from a guy who is REALLY picky on vampire / sci-fi / fantasy films. But once again, fighting games are just that; fighting games. We have films for DOA, street fighter, MK, MK2, MK3, etc. Dont we have enough fight movies? They need to look at Marvel / Disney ( first time I ever typed Marv and Dis together… I think I just threw up in my mouth a little! But really, Marvel, tell us some of your great story lines and keep them similar to the comic! Millions of comic buyers cant be wrong! With video games, you must do the opposite. Just because what is in the game during certain times and titles is regurgitated fight, fight, fight! However Mortal Kombat had a beautiful back story. And according to this quasi real trailer, I do like where theyre going. Give the game a plot so when the video game for the flick release, change gaming engines, formats, hell, make it a sandbox grand theft auto style game where you drive around aimlessly looking at crime scenes, scouting for the tournies, fight in underground fight clubs for information about the Kombat. Expand the game, mix genres, have fun with it. Keep it 85 percent grounded and people would flock for both film and game.
Someone stated that it reminded them of “SAW”. Kudos, I thought that right off the bat! And once again, Saw 1 had a good plot, as well as this. Keep the rivalries goind and wonder off that trail of writing.
Plus, anyone who liked the other MKs, they screwed up Sub Zero, Scorpien (his living grappling hook), they squeezed EVERY character they could in it. The whole thing was box office poison. At least this way when I watch it, I will feel like its a movie and not a choreographed 2 hour fight scene.

Well, those are my words and I still regret posting On MK.
    Karma Out (Shane)

  3. The trailer looks awesome; however, a villainous plastic surgeon is kinda weak – sorry! Could I come up with something, you ask??? How about a failed chemistry student part time pest exterminator who in his efforts to create the ultimate kill-all chemical turns him into crazed morphing monster with the ravaging killing attributes of all of pests?

Please guys, just don’t bore us, you’ve got people to thrill out here!!!

    • And thats why your not in charge with coming up with something.

    • you sound like a 10 year old with a unrealistic way of becoming different …..weak

  4. Wow, just wow! I think i’ve watched this like 10 times already and it just keeps on getting better! Everything they have changed, for me, just makes it seem right. And I love the way they snuck in a “finish him” and the remark about the fatalities…and the fact that the dude in the holding cell was Scorpion…I could go on forever, please let the guy make this as he obviously has his heart in it!

One thing though, I wonder if anyone can help me…4:39-4:40, when Johnny Cage is on the floor, just as he’s picking up the cigar; what’s that weird blob moving around bottom left of the screen? Intruiging…

    • i think it was just decorations from the table

      • ha! good call, methinks I was reading into it too much!

  5. That was the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long while. And of course Johnny Cage dies…damnit. I love the realistic spin on it and I would love to see this on the big screen. Hell, I was yelling at my computer when the video ended. Let’s hope it gets made. Fingers crossed.

  6. HELL YEA!!!!, WE HAVENT HAD A MORTAL KOMBAT MOVIE IN YEARS, ALL THE FANS OF MK R REALLY DISSAPOINTED FOR THE REALISM IN THE MOVIE WHICH IN MY OPINION, IT DOESNT INTERFERE, I THINK ITS ONE OF THE GREATEST IDEAS EVER!, AND NOT JST THAT, MICHAEL JAI WHITE AS JAX WOULD BE FANATASTIC, JERI RYANS AS SONYA WOULD BE BAD ASS, AND ANTHONEY DALE AS SCORPION, IT IS A RAP!, I THINK THIS MORTAL KOMBAT REBRITH MOVIE COULD MAKE DEFINITE SENSE, BUT IN ADDITION, PPL R STILL UPSET FOR THE CHANGE UP OF THE CHARACTERS, AS FOR REPTILE AND BARAKA, BUT HEY WHAT CAN U EXPECT FOR THEM TO BE IN REALISM, THATS WHY ITS GOOD THAT JAX EXPLAINS ABOUT THEM, AND HELLO, THE TITLE MAKES EVEN MORE SENSE, MORTAL KOMBAT REBIRTH!!!!

  7. Can you get a screenshot at whatever flashed on the screen at around 7:11, 7:12? Looks interesting…

    • That was Sub-Zero, man! Freeze it at 7:12. Looks cool as hell.

      • I just read my reply and noticed I said “freeze it” when talking about Sub-Zero. This movie makes me write puns subconsciously. It’s meant to be made for us fans.

  8. Anyone else catch Kurtis Striker at 0:29? Anyone who played MK3 knows what he looks like.

  9. This movie is gonna be awesome!!!!!!! You’ll be lucky to get a Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe movie

  10. PLEEEEASE let this be an upcoming MOVIE and not a video game! I am of the age of the “OG” Mortal Kombat when it first hit the arcades. The movies that came out in the 90′s were good for their time, but WAY outdated by today’s standards. This is one time that I would REALLY like a reboot of a franchise to come to light. With today’s advancements in CGI combined with highly advanced and updated wiring (I still remember the original M.K. movie where they didn’t CGI the wires completely out, and you could SEE them in the fight scenes!) This movie could be one heck of a reboot, at least compared to the 90′s versions.

  11. was that jerri ryan playing sonya blade? or is the thought of her in green spandex fighting just wishful thinking from me. Trailer looks good, especially if you then watch half the other crap hollywood is making. I do hope they make this

  12. they lost my vote with playing the resident evil theme song at the begining of the trailer…
but the movie is going to be good…
hope the characters are just like in the game…
    cant wait

  13. I LOVE THIS

  14. NO WAY!!! Mortal Kobat has realms and magic. If they make the movie the way it showed in the trailer it’s going to SUCK!!!

  15. NO WAY!!! Mortal Kobat has realms and magic. If they make the movie the way it showed in the trailer it’s going to SUCK!!!

  16. Let me start by saying the theme of scorpion getting even with sub-zero is cleaver…..but one of the things i didn’t like was that my boy lui kang wasn’t in there…..yeah he has been the topic of mortal kombat for ever but damn who cares keep him in……and the realistic side of mortal kombat is un heard of you can’t make this franchise realistic, so wheres ja(x)’s metal arms gonna be…….how is scorpion gonna throw his spear……..how is reptile gonna spit acid, come on…. but being a mk fan i can’t lie this trailor had me thinking about it everyday i would love a new make…..KEEP THE GAME THEME PLEASE!! oh, and having home boy from undisputed play ja(x) was a perfect fit no hands down….give him metal arms though lol (KEEP IT PHANTASY)…….oh yeah, lol……..something like this should maybe be put into a series/tv show on sci-fi or spike tv something that would have mk the show :-D that way us fans can enjoy more and more episodes :-D…..by the way sub-zero should be the main character of the two he’s more less evil and is better lol

  17. Michael Jai White plays Jackson Briggs and he was one of my martial arts teachers in Connecticut where he’s from before he became a film star. I just saw this trailer for the 1st time and I can definately find out directly from him if this is really happening.

  18. If he makes the movie it will be awesome everybody’s waiting for it to happen asap and the movie companies I hope your reading this cause were basically telling u to hurry up so we could pay you guys!

  19. All Dis fighting Mortal Kombat games are good but next Time when you making the new Mortal Kombat you should look back at Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks This Was THE BEST MORTAL KOMBAT GAME I EVER PLAYED cuz it had more stuff to do then just FIGHTING. So think about it when realising a new ONE.

  20. Ok heres the deal baraka was not a plastic surgeon who the hell writes this crap? And in faft if this is the third film needs to take a step back. Baraka was a mutant much like mileena but fused with katanas dna. All these films to make them common to the world today makes me sick your ruining a good film and i have gagged at this. the legacy reboot was much more better then this bs. To all the fans out there who find this revolting to mortal kombat i call a petition to not watch this if it is released in theaters. crazy maniacs what the heck is your brain screwed on backwards. obviously not a person who has played mortal kombat in his life,. play the damn game do your homework.

  21. I think Dwayne “the rock” Johnson should be cast as goro
