A series of Mortal Kombat character posters highlight the film's ensemble, providing looks at Sub-Zero, Kano, Mileena, Kung Lao & Shang Tsung. The film is the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid and is produced by Aquaman director James Wan. Mortal Kombat is an adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name that started in 1992 and had its most recent game released in 2019.

Mortal Kombat has had a number of adaptations since the game first hit. The 1995 film Mortal Kombat was one of the early video game films in the 1990s following Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter and marked the directorial debut for Monster Hunter director Paul W.S. Anderson. A sequel titled Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was released in 1997. In 2010 Kevin Tancharoen directed a short film titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth as a pitch to Warner Bros. That short film eventually evolved into the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Most recently in 2020 Warner Bros. Animation released the direct-to-video adult animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpions Revenge to build off the hype for the latest game and to generate interest in the upcoming live-action film. Now the big-budget reboot is starting the marketing campaign with a cool posters highlighting fan-favorite characters.

Mortal Kombat has undergone a number of release date changes. Originally set for a March 5, 2021 release the film was pushed up to January 15, 2021. Yet due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing several release date changes, it appeared that theaters would not be ready to open in time for January and the film was pushed back to April 16, 2021. Mortal Kombat is one of many films that Warner Bros. will release in both theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously this year.

While the marketing campaign appears to be kicking off just a little shy of two months before the release date that isn’t completely uncommon. Streaming series and movie marketing campaigns trend to happen much closer to release than a straight theatrical release film. Two months before the film hits appears to be the ideal amount of time for Warner Bros. as they aired the first trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong two months before its projected release date and it generated one of the most viewed trailers in the company’s history. Warner Bros. is now hoping that anticipation is high for Mortal Kombat to turn the film into another hit and potential franchise that can either find a home theatrically or on HBO Max.
