‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’ Season 2 Announcement Trailer; Tournament Will Be the Focus

Published 2 years ago by

The Web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy made something of a big splash last year, releasing nine episodes (watch them here) that largely focused on the re-imagined backstories of franchise-favorite characters such as Jax, Sonya, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Raiden, and others.

In not-so-coincidental accordance with Comic-Con 2012, director Kevin Tancharoen has announced that Mortal Kombat: Legacy season 2 is one the way, via a hilarious season 2 announcement trailer (see above). Scroll down for more details about what MK:L season 2 will entail.

Legacy covered a lot of Mortal Kombat history but ultimately left some fans cold, since the galvanizing event of the original video game series – the Mortal Kombat fighting tournament – was never actually featured in the Web series.

Speaking in a (refreshingly) frank and honest manner, Tancharoen addressed fan criticisms of season 1 – not enough fighting, no tournament storyline, etc. – by letting it be known that Mortal Kombat: Legacy season 2 will in fact have more action, more new characters, and will be all about the tournament to protect Earthrealm from the supernatural Outworld hordes.

If you didn’t catch it in the trailer above, here is a list of the characters who will appear in season 2:

  • Kano
  • Liu Kang
  • Raiden
  • Johnny Cage
  • Scorpion
  • Sub-Zero
  • Sonya
  • Kung Lao
  • Kitana
  • Mileena
  • Jax
  • Baraka
  • Stryker
  • Shang Tsung
  • Quan Chi
  • Ermac
  • Kenshi

Presumably the cast of the first season – including stars like Jerri Ryan as Sonya and Michael Jai White as Jax – will return for the second season; we also expect plenty of casting announcements for new characters to be announced in the coming weeks. Sidenote: that beat-box sequence at the end of the trailer was pretty sick.

Aside from the excitement that is sure to be derived from this news, I have to say that this is probably one of the more entertaining announcement trailers I’ve ever seen. From the funny live-action skits to the shots of posed action figures and video game footage –  the whole thing has an air of tongue-and-cheek humor to it that makes it hard to hate. That Tancharoen is taking fan concerns into consideration when crafting this sophomore season shows he has just as much appreciation for the people who love Mortal Kombat as his short film, Mortal Kombat Rebirth, proved his appreciation of the franchise itself.

The trailer craftily avoided the subject of a release date, but we expect to see more about Mortal Kombat: Legacy season 2 in the coming weeks/months. Stay Tuned.

  1. FIGHT!

  2. Amazing! I did get a bit tired of Season 1, and actually sort of forgot about it before Episode 9 even came out, so I am heading to watch it now.

  3. The voice for every name announced after Sonya was too hard to make out. They should have just used the announcer’s voice from the game.

  4. First we heard that Street Fighter is getting a TV series and now Mortal Kombat Legacy returning for season 2 well very good news

  5. I just don’t understand WB’s approach here. Why invest all the time and money into a series that is given away for free online? Wouldn’t throwing it in theaters where people pay to see it be a better business model?

I’m not complaining but it just seems odd for a studio to do this, It’s like they don’t want our money

    • Well the series DID come out on Blu-Ray and DVD after they finished the series. So they ARE making SOME money off of it. Tho probably not much since you can see them free online. I did pick up a copy of it on Blu-Ray myself just so i could watch them all at any given time and for the special features

      • You know. They still make money when you watch the episodes free online. just like they make money when you watch things for free on TV

    • They still get paid, kinda like watching it on tv man. Plus it was only a test just to see if fans would be interested in a new live action movie. Season 2 is the result of a promise plus it could get some more backstories out of the way (mostly those not in season 1 & see the final results of those injured in season 1 as well i.e. Jax, Kano, & Scorpion.) Since each episode is only 10 minutes (minus a few due to “Previously On MK:L…” footage), they can quickly cover the begining of the tournament. & finish it in a movie with a significantly LARGER budget with even better effects for the real meat & potatoes of the story & fights. then a season 3 could do the inbetweens of MK’s 1 & 3 (So basically MK2)

  6. errrm, I thought they green lit him working on a full movie?

    • Me too! This is a total bummer.

  7. So the first season of this web-series did well enough to demand a second, but not enough for a movie? Damn.

Let me get this straight- Ermac and freaking Kenshi are in it… But not Noob Saibot? Blasphemy, I say.

First season was spectacular though, looking forward to this one- I’d like to see if Scorpion still held that grudge with Sub-Zero

    • noob might be in the third one. if sub-zero dies here

  8. I’d forgotten about this tv show. Thouroughly enjoyed it when it was on, but now it’s going to be another TV show I have to wait for to come out. Damn!

  9. Pardon my french, but f*** the web series i want the Movie! What happened? i thought that was greenlit? Why has there been no information on it. I just can’t stomach bad acting which is why the series does nothing for me. Give this man a better budget and access to talented actors and actresses.

  10. Good news everyone! “Kevin also stated on twitter that the feature film is still in development and that season 2 would not affect it.”

  11. Well, it’s about time! I just hope the duration of each episodes is longer than the ones in the previous season.

  12. most of these are the same characters from the first season, they need to release a list of new characters didn’t appear in the first season, i wanna see Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Reptile, Smoke, Ermac, Kabal, Jade, Goro, Kenshi, and Shinnok

    • Did you not watch the whole thing (or read the list above)? Half the characters on your list are going to appear.

In any case, I’m looking forward to the second season. The first season was kind of hit and miss for me. Some I thought weren’t so great (Raiden was just too gimped in his episode, and the Scorpion one had too much talking), but some were pretty good (the Johnny Cage one had a nice spin to it, and the Jax/Sonia ones were well done too).

  13. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Mortal Kombat is the most successful fighting game genre in the box office! Mortal Kombat Legacy has definitely raised the bar for all fighting game genres. I can’t be more excited for Season 2. Liu Kang and Kung Lao still has to make an appearance. And where the hell is Goro? He’s cool and you know it!

  14. Do any of you look up stuff about this series or movie….outside of this site?? The show was only a test just to see if fans would be interested in a new live action movie. & finish it in a movie with a significantly LARGER budget with even better effects for the real meat & potatoes of the story & fights. then a season 3 could do the inbetweens of MK’s 1 & 3 (So basically MK2)…..or would you rather have another movie like GL with a bunch of characters that pop up with no explaination, but then disappear? Chill people the movie is comming, just let the man tie up loose ends first.

  15. I liked the Web series but they should have used Rebirth as a springboard for a film, keep the gruesome Se7en style and then bring the tournament in.
But I’ll still watch season 2.

  16. Honestly, I was kinda disappointed to know about the new Mortal Kombat movie. I would’ve wanted the series to keep going and see more of their interesting origins. Finally, questions will be answered and, yes, tie up loose ends!

  17. Seriously?

What is going on with the movie?! There is no need for another season of this, if anything it’s going to hurt the films chances of seeing the light of day even more.

I’m hoping this Season 2 all ties into LEADING up to the film, but I’m somewhat doubting it at this point.

  18. I have been waiting for the Tournament since I was 9 years old. I love what you did with Raiden!! Unbelievable! I still think that would happen to Jesus if he came now instead of then :)

Please, Please don’t rush it like they did the ending of the first movie. It should have been put together like what Marvel did with the Avengers. Anyway! Thank You for breathing life back into the Body that is the Mortal Kombat Franchise and Re-animating the kindred spirit that since watching these last nine back to back for the first time has transmutated into a backdraft comparable only to a cataclysmic solar flare.

  19. where is cyrix & sektor ?

  20. do we have a date yet

  21. where the hell is reptile?….he is shang sungs bodyguard…it dont make sense not to have him
