Mortal Kombat 2 star Lewis Tan teases the scale of the upcoming sequel. Released in April 2021, Mortal Kombat did not fare very well with critics, as video game adaptations generally don't, though it made its budget back and more at the pandemic box office and, at the time, was HBO Max's most-successful film launch. Mortal Kombat 2 was officially announced at the beginning of this year, though there haven't been many major updates since then, other than what the cast has teased during interviews.

Now, during a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Tan continues to tease Mortal Kombat 2. The Cole Young actor began by talking about how the recent Warner Bros. Discovery merger is affecting Mortal Kombat 2, before teasing the sequel itself, saying the movie is "going to be absolutely insane" and "way bigger." Read what Tan says below:

Well, it impacts a lot, but not really us in particular because New Line is the studio that is under the branch of Warner Bros. But they're very happy with the movie, and obviously, it performed really well. It's one of the most-viewed films of their Warner Bros. Slate, even though it came out at the worst time ever possible. But no, we're full steam ahead. And now, we have Ed Boon with us as well, so we got the stamp of approval from the legend himself. #2 is just going to be absolutely insane. Way bigger.

What Mortal Kombat 2 Could Be About

Mortal Kombat 2021 Cole Arcana Armor

The end of Mortal Kombat saw Cole heading to Los Angeles to find Hollywood martial arts-movie star Johnny Cage and recruit him to help defend Earthrealm against a future Outworld invasion. The fan-favorite character was infamously omitted from 2021's Mortal Kombat movie. In the two previous Mortal Kombat movie adaptations, Cage was played by Linden Ashby and Chris Conrad. Mortal Kombat 2 hasn't officially found its Johnny Cage actor yet, though a few names that have been floated are Keanu Reeves, Westworld's James Marsden, and WWE star The Miz.

Other than Tan's Cole Young, Mortal Kombat 2 will likely see the return of Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Shang Tsung (Chin Han). Mortal Kombat 2 will be directed again by Simon McQuoid, with The Umbrella Academy and Moon Knight's Jeremy Slater penning the script, taking over for Dave Callaham, Greg Russo, and Oren Uziel. Official plot details are currently under wraps, though Slater has said the creative team is listening to fan feedback to help create a sequel that outdoes the original.

Tan echoes these sentiments in his comments above and in past interviews, saying the sequel will have a longer runtime and even more gore. With some new blood in Slater writing the script, Mortal Kombat 2 has the chance to fix some problems from the first film, which were omitting Cage and the titular fighting tournament itself. With Shang Tsung vowing to bring armies to Earthrealm and Raiden's champions recruiting new warriors like Cage and others, Mortal Kombat 2 should be able to deliver the tournament fans have been hoping for and the larger scale sequel Tan is teasing.
