galactus (More) Galactus Will Return In Silver Surfer MovieIt’s way, WAY early but Tim Story, director of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (More) Galactus Will Return In Silver Surfer Movie stated recently that they didn’t show more of Galactus in the film because they wanted to save him for the stand alone Silver Surfer movie.

Tim Story said the following regarding the devourer of worlds:

“We decided early on that we would not bring him to life completely as you might think of him in the comics, being a man with the suit and the helmet and everything else,” Story said during his commentary. One of the main reasons is because we always knew that there was going to be a Silver Surfer 1, or they were going to make a spin-off of the Silver Surfer. If I gave up everything in this movie, then that movie wouldn’t have much to go on. Knowing that I wasn’t going to do it that early, I wanted to keep it fairly open to interpretation by the director who would do that one. So the idea of the cloud and everything made pretty good sense to us.”

Kind of nice of him to be so concerned for the next director, don’t ‘cha think?

Right now everything is up in the air due to the possible impending stirkes in Hollywood, but the last I heard, Alex Proyas was set to direct Silver Surfer. I’m a big fan of Proyas and would thoroughly look forward to his vision of the silver dude on the big screen.

  1. Problem with Proyas though is he won’t work with Fox ever again until Rothman is gone. He said that. Unless he changed his mind. Avi Arad said they had another director who was heavy into Zen to do the job. I forgot his name but it was mentioned. It might have been the guy who directed The Fountain.

  2. Ah, Aronofsky… well according to IMDB it’s still Proyas, although since there’s been no forward movement on the project in a while that may just be old info.

    Thanks!

    Vic

  3. However bad the second one was (which I didn’t think it was that awful), it was far better than the first one.

    Vic

  4. Man, oh man…
I hope they get Doug Jones to act and Fishburne voice Silver Surfer in this.

I hate it when they do a spin-off or a sequal and they don’t get the same actors.

  5. The first one was mediocre. Rise was a dramatic improvement. We didn’t see Galactus…he was just a presence surrounded by that cosmic energy. It’s better they did it that way IMO. Seeing Galactus in full form wasn’t necessary for this film. Besides imagine they did show him and they screwed it up forcing the Silver Surfer film to adhere to it or ignore it.

  6. In FF2 galactus was really bad, in fact the intire movie was horible (exept the CGI that was nice). The movie did not include story or enything in particular. Even the SS sucked, I mean geting his powers from the board that was pethetic. Let’s hope that the new SS movie will include his backroud (where was he from, how did he met galactus, and why did he became the SS). It would be cool if the SS goes on his first mission and finds the Scroll planet (for galactus to devour) and he is in denail if he should do it or not, then the Scroll king (I do not know if they have kings, emprors, or they are into politics) sends SuperScroll after him they fight (then the story pics up from there). That is what I think they should do.

  7. You are right, but I meane come on the movie was still bad. It was not up there with the x-men, spiderman, and the blade films. They did some improvemets but it felt more like a to be continued epissode in smallville. I olso whant to mention dr:doom I didn’t like the way he acted it looked like a gay perverd (even though his final outfit was nice).

  8. The director heavy into Zen that Avi Arad was talking about, I’m pretty sure is David O. Russell.

  9. Amazing how this news comes out on the eve of the DVD release of FF2 Rise of the Silver Surfer. Seems like B.S. to me, a half assed excuse that says hey we didn’t screw you out of Galactus, we’re saving him for another time. So it’s ok to go buy our crap film. No thanks.

  10. Rise of the Silver Surfer was very good, just too short,IMHO. The story would’ve played out better if they would’ve made it into a 2 hour scale, hopefully they won’t cut Iron Man like that. And,of course,I too missed Galactus,my biggest complaint about the version used in the film is that he doesn’t communicate at all with the Surfer. Those are my biggest complaints about the movie. The Thing looked REALLY awesome, much better than how he looked in the first one, they really did a great job with all the special FX scenes too. Not to mention how cool Doc Doom looked, another improvement over the first film. Oh yeah,Mr.Fantastic’s attitude was MUCH more in line with the classic comix than in the first film, another thing I appreciated. He’s commanding,a leader. Sure he’s a bit nerdy, but he’s never let that stop him from making the decisions for the team. Another thing that seems to go unnoticed by most is John Ottman’s score. The guy’s a genius! I liked his opening title sequence from the first film too. Say what you want to about F4:ROTSS,but as far as I’m concerned,it was an awesome movie and an improvement over the first. Beats Spider-Man 3 anyday.

The news about the Silver Surfer’s movie has made me very anxious to see it. Hope it comes out soon.

  11. Personally, I’m stoked about any movie based on comics I read or have read. (heh….funny how that looks..)
Anyhow, I did like FF2 over the first and think SS is an awesome character. I agree with Adrian about how they portrayed Galactus. I’m eagerly anticipating a SS movie.

On a side note, I think an origin story about Wolverine, would be cool. He is after all the most well known character of the x-men (this was true even before the movies). Although, yes, the movies focused alot on him, I still liked them. Although i think the movie about him should be called “James Howlett” and see how many people show up for that one (if they can do trailers without including footage of the claws).

Producers/directors/writers all do the best they can or know how to do. I’m sure they hashed it all out about how to show Galactus in the movie, and for purposes of profit or future productions, they opted to keep it low-profile and use a more omniscent being like a storm cloud.

  12. KEL, that’s EXCITELY my take on the film and is a huge improvement over the first. FF2 beats the following average films any day: Spider-Man 3, Superman Returns, Ghostrider, Xmen: LS, and Blade: Trinity. I just don’t understand what comic fans want out of this film?

If you’ve read FF comics (or seen the 90′s cartoon), the story followed along the lines of FF comic#48 on thru “The Galactus Trilogy”. The main difference from the film and the comics/cartoons is that the film ‘purposely’ left alot of questions unanswer SO there could be a origin Silver Surfer film with SS and Galactus as the mysterious leads. If Spidey3 would have done the same with Vemon, it would have been a better film.

FF2 is mostly light-hearted and fun, not overly dramatic like Superman Returns, Spidey3, or Xmen films. If you want to take a nap just pop in Superman Returns. The FF team has always been more humor than trajedy.

I’m glad FF2 didn’t follow in the footsteps of the Xmen films by actually NOT focusing on ONE person (*choff*Wolverine), because it’s a film about a family team. We all know that all the Xmen films are really Wolverine FEATURING the Xmen and now Fox wants to make a Wolverine origin movie again?

Ok, some fanboys complain about Galactus ‘cloud’ when we weren’t promise a full formed Galactus. I love the change and to be honest was a MUCH more terrifing image of a GOD level being (he eats planets) then a big purple or black suit guy with a big hat. Think about how corney that would have been and isn’t Galactic a cosmic entity?
Here’s a few questions I ask fans that are displeased with Galactus. Why would a galactic entity/God care about showing himself to his next meal? How do you stop something like a nebula type being?! Why not have SS explode near Galactus to change his mind about eating Earth instead of the silly use of a hand-held Ultimate Nullifer?

I know that the films is not perfect, but come on guys, it’s better than the list of films above.

  13. Sorry EXCITELY should be spelled EXACTLY.

  14. Alcadyzaar, Nice title for the Wolverine film! I could even live with the film being called ‘Logan’. Off subject, I’ve nothing against Wolverine, his a great character, just hoping Hugh Jackman learned from the wasted Van Helsing film and doesn’t ‘candy-coat’ the claws. Wolverine and Sabertooth are very messy, very savage, and ‘NOT Disney’! Wolverine’s could movie could be great. The Wolverine comics are so RAW that the “Kill Bill” films look soft. This movie should be at least a hard PG-13 to R rating along the lines of 300 or Blade or Blade2, not Ghostrider.

  15. Adrian,I’m pleased to see that someone agrees with me! Thanx.

I’m not really an X-Men or Wolverine fan,so I’ll have to refrain from commenting on any of those films, even though I did like X3 a little.

I am,however,a HUGE Superman fan. Personally,I think that SR was more good than bad, would’ve been better without the stupid “superkid” and “lemme try to win back Lois” subplots, and would’ve been better if Supes went up against someone OTHER than Luthor, even though I did like Spacey’s portrayal of the character. Hopefully Singer and CO will correct those mistakes in the sequel and keep in mind that if that if they’re not going to make a Superman movie that’s exciting and actually about Superman, than they shouldn’t make a movie at all. On the bright side Ottman’s score is fantastic! I really loved it.

I love Spider-Man too,but his 3rd film is really,Really,REALLY too depressing! A major, rather trivial problem that I had with it was that they didn’t have that incredible, uplifting ending with Spidey swinging away like 1 & 2.

And yes,the FF are a family. That’s one of the things (no pun intended) that I thought the second film captured a little better, and it’s also what made the comic so great. And,while I still missed the classic Galactus a little, the more I think about it,the more I like how he was portrayed in the film. SS should be pretty awesome! SS has a great origin, and tons of other great stories that would look really cool on film,so I definitely hope this movie gets made.

  16. sorry,I wrote “that if” twice. My bad.

  17. I kinda liked the kid in SR movie. I mean it has not been done before a superhero whith a son (at least in my knowleg). It would hawe been cool if we could get some fighting sceenes with Galactus and SS.( Even if it was some cloud robots).

  19. Kel, I love Sups(one of my favorite characters) and SR is a beautiful film, but as you said before, the film hugely lacked a new villian or new threat. Spacey is a great Luther, but geees Sups’ vault of deadliest villians (Darksied, Doomsday, Brainiac, Metallo, Mongul) are some of the most frightening villians out there and are being ignored. Just adding one of those villians and their chaos/environment would make the next SR epic! On that note SS needs the same.

SS film has to have TONS of outerspace scenes and alien planets, not alot of earth scenes.
I just hope SS and Galactus eventually fight against one of Marvel’s greatest spectacles, Ego: the living planet.

  20. Umm…how about NO earth scenes in the first SS movie? Why would they do that anyway? Wouldn’t having earth scenes mean that the FF would be involved, and shouldn’t that be saved for like the second or third film? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that it’s really necessary to have any scenes with earth at all in the first SS film. If there are any, they should be right at the end, when the Surfer tells Galactus of this planet callled…..earth.

In regards to the whole Superman villain movie thing,Toyman or Mr. Myxyzptlk would be better than another round with Luthor. Especially without his k-suit,I mean if he’s gonna face Supes again,at least let him wear that suit so we don’t feel like it’s the same fight….again!

  22. Aww shoot! I’m SO SORRY I posted twice. My Bad.

  23. You know,I just noticed that toward the end of the film (FF:ROTSS) the shape of Galactus’ helmet is shown several times in a cloudy, firey form. See specifically the part where the Surfer confronts him at the near end of the film.

You know,I really wish they would’ve used the full opening title/credits sequence for ROTSS. Thankfully, they at least put ROTSS’s original main title/opening sequence on disc 2 of the Power Cosmic edition DVD,I just wish they could’ve released it in the theater that way,or at least release the dvd with it put before the rest of the film. They did the same with the first FF (luckily you can catch the original main title on the extended edition DVD),I don’t know why they always feel compelled to cut the main title out of the FF movies, the main title sequence actually helps set the tone for the film. Hopefully if there is an FF3 they won’t cut out the opening credits/main title sequence again.

The parasite or Livewire would be another good idea for a villain for a Superman movie. Bizarro would even be cool!

  24. I LOVE THE FF MOVIES!! I SPENT 30 YEARS DYING TO SEE ALL MY MARVEL HEROES COME TO LIFE! MABEY SOME PEOPLE HAVE BECOME SPOILED WITH SO MANY MOVIES NOW BUT I FOR-ONE JUST HOPE HOLLYWOOD KEEP ‘EM COMING!! MABEY A SILVER SURFER MOVIE WILL OPEN THE DOOR TO ALL THE COSMIC TITANS LIKE THANOS VERSES GALACTUS!!

  25. FF2 was good, but if the Silver Surfer movie is in continuity with it, maybe the reason Galactus is a cloud will be explained, as well as why the Surfer’s powers come from the board (I thought that was kinda lame, but I guess they needed to give him a weakness). As an extra twist, they should add Terrax as a possible Original Herald, Uatu the Watcher (I thought he should have been in FF2), and maybe Thanos.

  26. In the Marvel comic, Galactus was just a cloud when the universe was created. He was a cloud because the way he survived the destruction of the previous universe, he had to modify his body to survive intense gravity and heat, and doing this changed his body completedly when the big bang happened. For eons he just floated around until he landed on a planet where the inhapitants created a suit to contain his vast energies.

This could be in the upcoming SS movie. After being defeated by the SS, Galactus just floated around until landing on an alien planet, where the natives create him a suit of armor to contain his energy. The SS has sensed that Galactus has survived and to save his loved one on Zenn-La, he goes to finish him once and for all.

I liked both FF movies; FF2 was definately better. The SS movie would have to be less light-hearted because he would be brooding over all the lives he helped destroy. I would think that The Watcher would be in the movie also, since he had a great impact in the comic.

  27. Another thing I should’ve added in my first post is that the Silver Surfer movie should be split into two segments. The first segment would be pre-FF2, and show his life on Zenn-La. Have Galactus arrive, and have Terrax possibly as his herald (because the Fallen One isn’t that well-known). Have the SS create the board, and use it to beat Terrax. In order to save his world, he becomes the new herald.
The second segment would be post-FF2 to a degree. It would show him at the end of FF2, floating in space. But then he’d meet Uatu the Watcher and SS would fight Thanos, and cool stuff like that.
That way, when FF3 happens, SS can return along with Uatu to assist the FF with whatever problem presents itself (Personally, I’d like to see Annihilus as a possible villain, or a storyline on the Inhumans).
Also, I’d like to see SS w/o the board’s requirement. Maybe the board’s power would eventually become innate.

  28. FF2 was def better than the first, I wouldn’t
say it was a good movie, it was the better ff movie. I would like to see a silver surfer movie
along with galactus in a form of a man like in the
comics. I agree, the watcher and terrax need to be
in the movie. I say if the first ss movie is a hit
it would make sense to bring Thanos as the villian
and he should possess all the infinity gems and
the film should explain what power each gem has and how hes gotten ahold of them.

  29. When i said thanos in the film i meant film as in
    a possible ss2.
