Over at CHUD.com there’s a report that details the upcoming slate of superhero movies coming from Marvel Studios on the heels of the spectacular performance of Iron Man so far.
They had a chance to sit down with Kevin Feige, the head of the fledgling studio and hounded him for answers about upcoming movies.
Included in the interview were details about the upcoming Captain America movie, the Avengers movie (which seems a heck of a lot more likely to happen than the stillborn Justice League film), Thor and Iron Man 2.

Among the news bits are the fact that the Captain America movie will remain titled The First Avenger: Captain America instead of the preferred (by most) Captain America: The First Avenger. They’re scheduling the Cap movie to be released only a month and a half before the Avengers movie, so the emphasis on the group in the title of his stand alone movie seems to be quite calculated.
As to when the film will take place: World War II time frame, so it will be a full-on origin story taking place entirely in the past. I think that’s a GREAT idea and I’m betting that a lot of the Avengers film will concentrate on his adjustment to present day following his being in suspended animation at the end of his movie. That’s speculation but it would be awesome to have a cliffhanger in his film resolved only six weeks later instead of having to wait two full years (can you say Han Solo frozen in Carbonite?).
Feige also stated that they are in negotiations with Jon Favreau to come back and do Iron Man 2 which I stated was a no brainer a few days ago.
I really like how Marvel is approaching the idea of building a universe of superheroes that they’ll bring together for an ensemble movie. The DC route seemed like a bad idea, but this direction is a good one.

I’d actually like the movie to be called just Captain America.
Same goes for the Wolverine movie, people aren’t idiots, they know what a movie called Wolverine and starring Hugh Jackman is going to be about.
NEED Super happy Captain fun time now Plzkthnxbye!!!
Great news that Cap America will take place in WW2 !!!
Marvel, really sticks to the comic origins… This film sounds like its getting a real cool treatment.
Also so great to hear that Matt McConnaHey won’t be Surfing with Nazi’s this time.
This is great news indeed. Imagine the imagery of Captain America jumping through enemy lines leaping over nazi tanks and taking on the SS. Awesome, awesome, awesome … if true.
INK
Whoever is going to be playing the Cap sure will be a busy guy.
Truly fantastic news. I can’t wait.
Hopefully Cap is played by a good unknown, McCaughney doesn’t strike me as a good choice for any superhero except Booster Gold. Sorry. In regards to the storyarc, this is exacty what I was hoping for. Having the first Cap film set entirely during WW2 leaves plenty of time for his origin and story to flesh out. I’m glad that they won’t be throwing him into contemporary times so soon.
In regards to the “DC method”, the way they were doing JLA is the only way it would have worked. DC/WB’s other films, such as Batman Begins and Superman Returns, were not set up in he same universe, to have Singer’s Superman and especially Nolan’s Batman in a film together with the JLA would not have worked. Singer’s Superman has been Superman for at least 6 years and is played by a comparatively younger actor than Nolan’s Batman, who is just beginning and can’t seem to think for himself, unlike the comics/JLA Batman. Could you see Nolan’s Baman bulding the Watchtower or fighting aliens or, thru scientific means discovering his team members’ weaknesses and preparing to use them against them if need be? I sure couldn’t, Nolan’s Batman couldn’t even make his own batsuit or batmobile. He’d have Lucius doing all the JLA stuff. The JLA Batman has to be Batman the detctive, a genius, the thinking man, Nolan’s Batman isn’t any of those things, Nolan’s Batman only works in Nolan’s univere, it would not work in this extended DC Universe with the JLA and Green Lantern. Neither would Snger’s Superman. In order to have the Superman and Batman from the individual films together in a JLA fim, the movies HAVE to be set up in the same universe, like the Marvel films are. The DCU filmivese wasn’t set up that way from the start, and therfore having Nolan’s Batman and Singer’s Superman in a JLA film together would not work. I am certain that DC/WB and CO realizes this, which is why when a JLA film is made it will be with a different Superman and Batman than Nolan’s and Singer’s. DC should have had a plan to establish the films in the same universe from the start, like Marvel did.
Very Exciting stuff!
I’m also kinda happy about the WWII base then we see him appear in modern age with some awesome new costume and bust some heads with Iron man and thor.
My big question is what kinda team are we looking at? Will it have Ed Norton as Hulk? Will it have antman/giantman who i keep hearing may have a movie in a few years as well?
This title for the Cap is probably the best we can hope for, given that a superhero with “America” right in his name isn’t considered very marketable right now. Sad but true.
Hope the WWII piece has Cap using the old style shield and is as intense as “Saving Pirate Ryan”.
Also have a feel that Cap will be using guns for a small portion of the film.
I think the movie will be massive in the US and bomb everywhere else besides the UK, Australia and Mexico…Marvel is really showing off it’s marketing savy and uber ability to market it’s characters.. If any concept will make Cap work overseas it will be the WW II story arc with Cap being falling into suspended animation. As a kid I loved this character and the ideals he represented but how to make the boy scout character and die hard patriot translate well in todays world will be difficult feat at best.
First one to suggest the opening date of Cap’s movie
gets a red white and blue birthday cake.
Does WWII Cap mean Bucky? (Ewww)
I think it would be awesome if they took the “ultimate” route for cap, at least costume wise. The WWII cap in Ultimates is amazing, and his modern day ultimate costume just translates to film better.
i kinda figured that a captain america movie, thor movie and the avengers movie would eventually come. Once you saw fury in the ironman movie saying that he is assembling a team gives you a good idea and when u see ironman in the hulk movie say the same thing you should definatly know. i hope marvel really goes all out in the captain america movie like that have done with every movie and i can only imagine how the lightning graphics and flying graphics will look in the Thor movie. i can’t wait for them to come out.
