A full-length trailer for Monsters University has premiered online, following the extended preview for Disney and Pixar's Monsters, Inc. prequel hosted by director Dan Scanlon (a storyboard artist on Cars and helmer for the video short "Mater and the Ghostlight").

Monsters University picks up with James P. Sullivan (voice of John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) during their college years, where they begin as odd-couple roommates before growing into the best of friends. The other cast members include Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) returning as Randall, alongside new additions like Joel Murray (Mad Men), Julia Sweeney ("Pat" on SNL) and Kelsey Grammer (Boss) replacing the late James Coburn as Monsters, Inc. head Henry J. Waternoose III.

The trailer is overflowing monster-oriented gags and good-natured satirical riffs on college traditions, offering the best example yet of how Monsters University draws from iconic university comedies (Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds). Indeed, the Pixar animators have long found ways to work homages to classic cinema into their films, as evidenced by the nods to The Great Escape in Toy Story 3, 2001: A Space Odyssey in WALL·E, Seven Samurai in A Bug's Life and so on.

Pixar's movies often straddle the fence between realism and cartoony physics, but Monsters University looks to take greater advantage of freedom in the animation medium than recent titles like Brave and even Cars 2 (see: Mike's Looney Tunes-esque treadmill antics, for instance). That's in keeping with the style of Monsters, Inc., which often plays out as an expressive 2D cartoon animated in 3D.

Here is a proper synopsis for Monsters University, followed by the poster:

Monsters University, Pixar Animation Studios’ long-awaited prequel to 2001′s Monsters, Inc., takes viewers back in time before James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) and Michael “Mike” Wazowski (Billy Crystal) formed the most successful “scarer” team in Monsters, Inc. history. The film chronicles the pair’s Monsters University origins, where 18-year old Sulley and Mike first meet and become competitive rivals. However, as the two monsters go one eyed head-to-furry head, a larger dilemma forces them together – forging a lifelong friendship and setting the stage for their future adventures.
