Monsters Inc 2 Monsters, Inc. 2 Currently In Production?

Last summer we got word of Pixar possibly doing a Monsters Inc. 2. It was reported that at the 2009 Licensing International Expo, Pixar gave a preview session for all its upcoming features and one of those was Monsters, Inc 2. At the time it was explicitly noted that the studio hadn’t made any sort of official decision on a Monsters Inc. sequel.

Now we learn – via an exclusive scoop over at Latino Review – that not only is Pixar planning on making Monsters, Inc. 2 but that the movie is already in the production line for release in 2012-2013.

The info comes from what Latino Review calls a “very reliable source” but they remind us that to be on the safe side, we should file this under “RUMOR” until it’s confirmed either way.

The director of the first Monsters, Inc., Pete Docter (who also directed Pixar’s  Oscar-nominated hit, Up), is the one who has been fielding questions about whether or not we’ll see further adventures of Mike and Sulley. He’s apparently been skirting round those questions, probably because he’s got so many other things on his plate and also because he’ll probably want to keep people’s attention focused on the films coming out sooner rather than later.

There’s currently no word on whether Docter would direct or co-direct Monsters, Inc. 2 but if it does happen I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t involved in some way or another.

The obvious question is why is Pixar all of a sudden going sequel crazy? They used to be known for making original films each time they embarked on a new project (with Toy Story 2 being the exception). But with Toy Story 3 on the way this summer, Cars 2 officially in the works and now (if this news is true) Monsters, Inc. 2 being added to that list, it looks like the master animation team has realized that a sequel will probably earn more money at the box office.

In my opinion, Monsters, Inc., as good as it was, has always been a lesser of Pixar’s work (Toy Story, Up and WALL-E are at the top for me) and not the first film by the studio I’d pick for a sequel. But nonetheless, I see no reason why a sequel wouldn’t rival the first film (just look at Toy Story 2) and be just as much – if not more – of a hit.

Would you like to see a sequel to Monsters, Inc.? Or would you rather see a sequel to one of the studio’s other movies instead (The Incredibles, perhaps)?

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for confirmation on whether Monsters, Inc. 2 is actually in production or not.

  1. Pixar is probably sequel happy all of the sudden because it's a subsidiary of Disney.

  2. I thought Coraline had the plot of a bad video game.

  3. I thought Coraline had the plot of a bad video game.

  4. You make it seem as if they had to choose between Incredibles and Monster's Inc, and Incredibles will never have a sequel. If we're basing it on time, then Monster's Inc SHOULD get a sequel before Incredibles. Both shoulda happened before Cars 2 though, which I won't be seeing.

  5. “WALL-E is a very good movie, and it's first half is perfect, but I don't understand why so many think it's one of the very best Pixar movies. I mean, all of them are good to a degree, but there are a handful of Pixar films I'd put ahead of WALL-E right now (Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Up). I probably need to see WALL-E even more times, but still. On the other hand, I just love the style and the sheer creativity of Monsters Inc. The movie is very funny and has great characters, as well. Also, I think it has the best ending of any Pixar film.

I'm very excited for Toy Story 3. I'm not sure how I feel about Cars 2, and I'm going to reserve judgment on a Monsters Inc 2. I would love to see The Incredibles 2 if it has a great story prepared, along with Brad Bird on board.”

Totally agree with this. Really not looking forward to Cars 2 seeing as the first one put me to sleep. I'm another one that would choose other movies before Wall-E. It was good for one watch through for me, but it's not really my style.

  6. I agree with you monsters inc. was perfect and should have a sequal. It is much better than any other pixar movie. Dont get me wrong every pixar movie is great just this one is the best

  7. Lesser work? You must be kidding. Monsters Inc. helped put Pixar on the map and is one of my favorite all time movies. It was genius!
