TV Guest Stars: ‘Modern Family’, ‘American Horror’, ‘New Girl’ & More

There’s been a handful of notable casting updates as of late, and to catch up we’ve assembled the relevant ones for your reading pleasure. ABC’s Modern Family gets an arresting guest star, new cast members have been announced for FX’s American Horror Story, and Fox’s New Girl gets her first crush for the new series, and more.

Modern Family will see David Cross (above, right) guest star as a city councilman who runs afoul of Claire (Julie Bowen). Arrested Development fans will recognize Cross from his role as Tobias, though everyone else has almost certainly seen the prolific comedian somewhere. Cross has played in both Kung Fu Panda movies and other animated films and TV shows, has appeared regularly on The Colbert Report, and can be seen in untold comedy movies playing “that slightly creepy guy who probably lives in his mother’s attic”. You can catch Cross in the third season of Modern Family, which starts on September 21st.

In other comedy news, Justin Long (above, left) will be the first recurring guest star for Fox’s New Girl when it debuts this fall. Long has been around for years playing in movies like Dodgeball, Accepted and Live Free or Die Hard, but even the most casual of moviegoers will probably remember him as the athropomorphized computer guy from Apple’s smarmy “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads. Long will be New Girl star Zooey Deschanel’s love interest in a major story arc.

FX’s new series American Horror Story is getting its first big guest stars in Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek) and Teddy Sears (Torchwood: Miracle Day, The Defenders). The pair will play a gay couple that owns the creepy house the show’s main family moves into. Sears has been circling arcs on various TV shows for years, and Quinto broke out on Fox’s 24. This will be his first major TV role since Heroes was defeated last year.

There’ll be no shortage of eye candy when ABC’s 1960s period piece Pan Am takes off on September 25th. Add one to the airborne actress with Erin Cummings, who’ll be playing one of the airline executive’s mistresses (not unlike fellow redhead Christina Hendricks on Mad Men) in a first-season arc. Spartacus fans will remember Cummings as the protagonist’s ill-fated wife, and she’s also had small roles on Detroit 187 and Dollhouse.

Speaking of period pieces, NBC’s entry The Playboy Club is filling one of its first major guest spots with R&B singer Raphael Saadiq (above, left). He’ll be portraying R&B legend Sam Cooke in a special guest appearance at the iconic nightclub. You can expect The Playboy Club to repeat this old/new singer dichotomy throughout its production run, as they’ve already found contemporary artists to portray other, less notable ’60s singers in the first season.

Finally, the awkward guys of The Big Bang Theory will be getting even more enviable company when Katie Leclerc (above, right) comes on for a recurring guest role in the fifth season. The Switched at Birth star will play a potential love interest for Raj. The actress and her characters are hearing impaired, making her a notable young player for the deaf community. Leclerc’s episode is scheduled to air on October 6th, a few weeks after the September 22nd premiere.
