For a while now, many Mission: Impossible fans have been wondering when we might get a proper look at the fifth installment, directed by Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) and starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris, Alec Baldwin, and more. After all, production on the film wrapped about a week ago, and since it was moved from its December release to avoid Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there's barely four months to go until it hits theaters.
Well, today's the day, people. Not only do we now know the title of the film - Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - we're also getting a look at the first teaser trailer (above) and poster.
The trailer focuses on a couple different things - first, a mysterious spy (played by Rebecca Ferguson) who saves Ethan Hunt from what looks to be a potential imprisonment/torture situation. The film seems to be positioning her as Ethan's equal in just about every way, from fighting ability to stunt-driving and so forth. In fact, their motorcycling antics seems to recall the chase scenes from John Woo's Mission: Impossible 2.
The other thing the trailer focuses on is The Syndicate - the "Rogue Nation" of the title - which Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg's character) refers to as the Anti-IMF. Although we clearly know very little about this Syndicate/Rogue Nation, it does bring to mind S.P.E.C.T.R.E. from the Sean Connery James Bond movies, which was was not only a criminal syndicate, but also sort of the anti-MI6. That's particularly of note because the next James Bond movie will see the return of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Might we see two major spy movies come out in the same year with similar plots/enemies?
The last part of the trailer teases what will likely be the big stunt of the movie, not unlike the scene in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol that saw Tom Cruise scaling the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai. This time around, Cruise clings to the side of a massive plane as it takes off. The image also appears on the movie's teaser poster. Check it out below:
