When Minecraft debuted on the Wii U in December, fans rejoiced. Some were left wondering whether Minecraft: Story Mode would also make the jump, especially considering that none of Telltale’s other games were available on the console.

On January 18, however, Telltale and Mojang announced that Story Mode was coming to the Wii U in fairly short order. Not only that, but it would be available both as individual episodes and a Season Pass option to get all of the episodes with a single purchase.

Minecraft: Story Mode – Episode I: The Order of the Stone will be released on the Wii U e-Shop on January 21. Additional episodes will be released in the coming weeks as well, until all five episodes are available. Individual episodes will be priced at $4.99 each. The Season Pass for Story Mode will sell for $19.99 and will give players access to episodes 2 through 5 as well, with Season Pass owners getting the new game episodes as they become available.

The Wii U version of the game will support off-screen and mirrored play on the Wii U GamePad. A pretty common Wii U feature, this will allow players to enjoy the game either on the TV or on the GamePad’s screen if the TV is in use. It will also feature both touch and joystick controls, letting players use standard controllers or control the game directly from the touch screen on the gamepad.

A lot of people were kind of confused when Minecraft: Story Mode was first announced, since part of the point of Minecraft was that it didn’t have a story. Telltale won over a lot of the game’s critics, though, and managed to craft an enjoyable story within the world of Minecraft. Being able to tell this story on the Wii U opens it up to even more potential fans, especially so close on the heels of the Wii U Minecraft release.

If Story Mode does well on the Wii U, it makes one wonder whether other Telltale titles could see a Wii U release as well. Though rumors of a Nintendo NX release in late 2016 or sometime in 2017 could limit the appeal of porting games to the system, it could open up a new potential market for some of Telltale’s other titles like Back to the Future or The Wolf Among Us. Even if nothing else gets released on the Wii U, hopefully a positive experience will make Telltale interested in future releases once the NX gets here.
