Mindy Kaling has been an exciting name in comedy ever since her work began on The Office. She’s been able to solidify herself as a unique voice in the genre for years now, with The Mindy Project is one of the most critically acclaimed comedies on network television. Despite all its critical success, the series has struggled with keeping high ratings, leading to its recent cancellation on the network.
While that would have meant the death of a show just a few years ago, fans had reason to hope: immediately following the cancellation came rumblings that Mindy might be picked up for a fourth season by Hulu (much like what Yahoo! Screen has done with Community). It turns out those rumors were more than just desperate hope from fans on message boards, as audiences haven’t seen the last of The Mindy Project after all.
Hulu has officially announced today that they will be picking up the series for a 26-episode fourth season. The series will now join Hulu’s original programming slate following a new partnership with Universal Television. Fans will be able to stream all past and future episodes of the series exclusively on Hulu.
Craig Erwich, the Senior Vice President and Head of Content at Hulu commented on the announcement with the following:
“Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship. With so many of her fans already catching up and tuning in to the series on Hulu, we know her millions of fans will be eager to find out what Mindy has in store for the next chapter.”
“I am thrilled The Mindy Project has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show. It’s such an exciting place to be.”
Bela Bajara of Universal Television stated the following:
“We are proud of the fresh, hilarious, smart storytelling on The Mindy Project. Mindy, along with the writers and actors, surprise us every week. They have made us laugh (a lot), cry and think. We are excited about our partnership with Hulu and look forward to sharing our amazing comedy with the show’s many loyal fans for seasons to come.”
Mindy Project is an emmy-nominated single-camera comedy starring Kaling in the lead role, Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Ike Barniholtz, Beth Grant, Xosha Roquemore, and more. It follows Kaling’s character, a successful OB/GYN doctor as she deals with issues in both her personal and professional life. The series has become one of a number of news shows set to debut on Hulu in the coming months, with the slate also including Stephen King’s 11/22/63, Amy Poehler’s Difficult People, and more.
This shouldn’t come as much of a shock to die-hard fans considering how loved the series actually is (despite its low ratings) and its consistent popularity in Hulu’s content library. The solid cast of recognizable names as well as a consistent onslaught of hilarious guest stars has been a large part of what has made it so diverse among the many other, formulaic sitcoms on network programming nowadays. Not to mention that the writing behind the series never seems to falter, maintaining the amount of laughs fans hope for every week while being able to include smart and subtle social commentary.
Whether or not Hulu plans on renewing the series for more seasons probably won’t be known until the numbers come in for season four, but considering the fan response to its cancellation and now renewal – The Mindy Project might have a much brighter future ahead of itself than it did just a few days ago.
