Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown will play Sherlock Holmes' younger sister in Legendary's Enola Holmes. Legendary reportedly hopes to launch a franchise starring Brown as Holmes, a fourteen-year-old sleuth. Brown broke through playing the telekinetic teenager Eleven on Netflix's smash hit sci-fi series Stranger Things.

Arthur Conan Doyle's brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes, of course, has a long history on film and in television. Movie versions of the character's sleuthing adventures date back to the earliest silent days. Basil Rathbone established himself as the quintessential Hollywood Holmes through fourteen movies produced between 1939 and 1946. Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. much later turned the cerebral Holmes into an action man in 2009's Sherlock Holmes and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Benedict Cumberbatch these days plays Holmes as a prickly, sociopathic genius in the BBC One series Sherlock.

Deadline is reporting that Millie Bobby Brown will next take on the role of a detective named Holmes, but with a twist. Brown will star in Legendary's adaptation of the Enola Holmes books, a YA series by author Nancy Springer. Legendary plans to build a franchise around Springer's series of six novels. Brown will produce through her PCMA Productions banner.

The Enola Holmes books kick off when 14-year-old Enola escapes a boarding school and sets out to discover the whereabouts of her mother, who everyone else believes has died. Enola ultimately follows in the footsteps of the famous Sherlock by solving missing persons' cases. She also uses her wiles to elude her brother as he tries to track her down. Springer's books borrow characters and settings from Doyle's original Holmes stories.

After her breakout performance in Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown has now begun her film career in earnest. The actress will next appear in Legendary's MonsterVerse entry Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Enola Holmes gives Brown a chance to break away from sci-fi and delve into the YA mystery genre. It also affords her the opportunity to establish herself as a major movie actress capable of carrying a franchise. (And she can do that without having to play a vampire or a dystopian heroine.) Brown was also reportedly offered a lead role in Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair, though nothing has been confirmed on that front.

Brown will also return for Stranger Things season 3, which should arrive in late 2018 or early 2019. Stranger Things season 2 saw Brown developing her acting chops playing a rebellious Eleven getting mixed up with a gang of miscreants, though many didn't like the "more mature" Eleven of season 2. Enola Holmes sounds like it will give Brown a chance to play young and vulnerable, while still being smart and resourceful.
