Production on the fifth entry in the video game-turned-movie franchise – Resident Evil: Retribution – is underway in Canada, with Paul W.S. Anderson once again handling both writing and directorial duties.

Anderson’s wife and the leading lady of the Resident Evil series, Milla Jovovich, has been keen to keep fans updated on the status of the latest entry in the zombpocalyptic franchise. She previously revealed the title and setting of Alice’s next battle against the diabolical Umbrella Corporation – and spent a chunk of this past weekend dropping additional bits of information about the film.

Jill Valentine (who will be played by Sienna Guillory) looks to become one of the primary antagonists in Retribution. The film will also mark the screen debut of several fan-favorite characters from both the Resident Evil video game and CGI movie universes – in keeping with (according to Jovovich) Anderson’s self-proclaimed plans to incorporate fan-feedback into the storyline of the fifth Resident Evil flick.

New additions to the live-action Resident Evil film franchise include former Raccoon City cop Leon Scott Kennedy – who will reportedly not be played by Jensen Ackles, despite fans’ wishes – as well as S.T.A.R.S. weapons specialist Barry Burton and “Organization” agent Ada Wong. Expect to learn about which actors and actresses will be portraying said characters, in the near future.

Jovovich has also either revealed or confirmed the following tidbits of plot information (via her Twitter account):

  • The plot of Retribution sees K-Mart (Spencer Locke) – along with Claire (Ali Larter) and Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) – kidnapped by the Umbrella Corporation.
  • Shawn Roberts will reprise his role as Albert Wesker from Resident Evil: Afterlife, while Colin Salmon is set to portray James “One” Shade for the first time since the 2002 Resident Evil movie.
  • Retribution will feature Las Plagas parasites and promises to be the most action-packed of the series yet – seeing how it will also include a highly-complex chase sequence and a showdown between Alice and Jill, among other (hopefully) thrilling set pieces.

The Resident Evil movies have done all right by themselves as far as box office returns go, but fans have generally had mixed feelings about the franchise. Case in point: the first installment was fairly well-received by RE converts, but its conclusion deviated significantly from the video game source material – and set the stage for two sequels (Extinction and Apocalypse) that lacked the cohesive narrative design of the original film.

Afterlife was largely considered an improvement – if still not quite an outright successful zombie action flick – in comparison to its immediate predecessors. That uptick in quality, coupled with higher 3D ticket prices, helped the film bring in nearly $300 million around the globe last year and become the most financially successful installment yet.

Retribution isn’t going to win over anyone who wasn’t already a fan of the Resident Evil series – or convince those who dislike Anderson’s hyper-stylized brand of action filmmaking to change their minds (especially since the film will be shot in 3D, like Afterlife). However, it does look to offer much more of what longtime converts to the series have been wanting: additional beloved characters and a storyline that (to a degree) more closely resembles that in the original games.

It may have taken five movies to get there – but better late than never, right?

Resident Evil: Retribution is slated for theatrical release in the U.S. on September 14th, 2012.

  1. I love this series. I play all the games to this day as well. Looking forward to this one for sure.

  2. Used to hate these movies, but I gave up when “Afterlife” came out. It was a losing battle.

Own ‘em all, looking forward to #5.

  3. It all depends on just who ends up playing Leon… Bad casting here will break the movie, while good casting will really get the video game fans back on board

    • P.S. Maggie Q for Ada… Just saying

      • HAHA agree..

  4. Btw, sucks to be Kmart, always kidnapped by Umbrella for the majority of the movie anymore

    • kmart is just a real life entity of ashlee garham. (she never said her real name in the movie so its possible…you know?)
and finaly, leon, barry, and ada. oh, wait. they forgot my 2d
      fav girl of resi, Rebecca

  5. Great update.

Bad news that Jensen Ackles isn’ going to play Leon S. Kennedy, still please don’t let Robert Patterinson play Leon, I just saying.

Great news that Wesker is returning and also the Redfields.

Maybe more scary scenes and action scenes will make Resident Evil 5 just as good as the first one.

  6. Alice
    Barry B
    Chris……a lot of characters.

  7. Love it, love it, love it!

  8. The last two movies stunk. Real bad.

But ya know, I’ll end up renting the DVD anyway because Milla makes me drool. :-p~

  9. um okay so i know somewhere in the RE universe they explained what happened to angela from the second movie but they never told the story in the movies. i beleive alice just hinted that something bad had happened. are they ever going to tell that part?

  10. Resident Evil 4 was the worst movie ive seen in years. I want my 2 hours back and dont believe that anyone would actually pay money to see another. Mila Jovovich is above this, and is losing serious credibility by starring in more of these so called movies. The next movie WILL be a flop and Paul Anderson will have a very tough time gaining the respect of “Hollywood” after it. Get out while the getting’s good!

      • wow they choose to follow the resident evil game that changed it from a horror film to a action film. This game went in the wrong direction

    • Completley agree. It’s laughable how bad these movies are. They’re not even B movies. They’re Z movies.

  11. Knock it off Directer of the resident evil movies. You suck at being creative and originality. Get a new job.

  12. Ok, Hollywood, you like to reboot everything, when does this horrible schlock get rebooted?

Seriously Afterlife the best of this series? Spending 5 minutes showing a character sliding across a wet floor only to not show key plot points? That movie was horrible.

I only hope this movie has what it takes to kill this crap.

  13. I thought the last one did a great job. I didn’t like Extinction.

The first one was probably my second favorite. The second one wasn’t bad too. I thought it was funny.

  14. Sweet

  15. They should just make a new story completely based on RE4…

  16. It would have been so cool if Jensen were in the new movie.

  17. Why wouldnt they want Jensen Ackles to Leon Scott Kennedy? They are probably get someone to play him terribly like the guy that played Chris Redfield.

    • I don’t think it’s because they don’t want Jensen I think he’s just too busy with Supernatural, but it’d be awesome if they could have gotten him.

    • Oh really? No-one is going to see it? your pathetic.

  18. First of all, I think all of the movies are great, afterlife was great but could have had Leon and Ada. They should have kept with the games a little bit the only one I thought was the best till this day, which was apocalypse, which had Jill and Carlos, and number one should have had Jill and Chris and possibly alice since she is the best in my opinion, I hope number 5 will top em all off!! :D

  19. Because of the last movie, technically you can’t have a RE4 because, Hello!! Everyone is the living dead. In RE4, society was fine, except South America with the Las Plagas and everything…how are they gonna do a story anywhere similar to Leon saving the annoying Ashley!! (She was such a headache to save, she would just stand THERE AND LET THEM TAKE HER!! I SHOT HER A COUPLE OF TIMES OUT OF FRUSTRATION!!) :)

  20. That would have been awesome if Jensen was Leon, both are hot. :)

  21. Eh…I like the movies, but that might be because I’ve never been a fan of zombie survival games, and thus never played the RE games. As a (mostly) mindless, action, zombie survival movie series it’s great to watch, imo.

  22. Definitely can’t wait for the 5th installment. But I don’t see how they can justify bringing One back unless they’re flashbacking or he’s some kind of clone. As for Leon, I’m glad Jansen isn’t cast. Johann Urb should be able to pull it off just fine

    • who cares .. i loved his role in the 1st movie.. even is it was a short one… I’m glad that he’s back in whatever form… with that voice… just makes you melt…..

  23. All of yall need to stop hating on alice (milla jovovich) because she is a good character I don’t see y’all up there do I ??????? No I don’t so stop it just stop it u r just making a fool out of yourself’s give her a brake ok goodness!!!!!

  24. Manson needs to return to do the soundtrack
