Bringing some of the world’s most successful properties to the world of video games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have a significant reputation to uphold following the critical success that they saw with the Batman Arkham series, as well as the flurry of LEGO universe games that continue to be pumped out and their various other franchises.
Announcing at the end of February that they had secretly been working on the sequel to the critically-acclaimed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor game, WBIE eventually revealed that the follow-up is titled Middle-earth: Shadow of War and will be hitting shelves on August 25, 2017. Now, the first official gameplay video for Shadow of War has been released, showcasing some of the action that fans will be a part of when they get their hands on the title.
Taking place “many hours into the game”, those behind Shadow of War are hoping to show off the new Nemesis System that developers hope will make each individual experience with the game a unique one. We see the introduction of a Dragon Lord and an assault on a stronghold in the preview, giving us just a glimpse of the incredible chaos and battles players will be jumping into upon release. All of this is a part of the new Nemesis Fortress addition, where players are forced to use a number of different strategies to conquer dynamic strongholds with their personalized army of Orcs. Right now, developers are promising the fight seen in the video is just “one of the millions of possibilities that players will experience”.
Though Shadow of Mordor was at its heart a game of strategy, things have really taken a big step forward here. Now more than ever before, players will be forced to spend their time planning out an attack on a fortress such as this one, while also having to think on their feet when in the midst of battle. It’s all combining to ensure that this is one of the most intense and atmospheric gaming experiences a gamer could have.
Of course, with bringing so much new gameplay to the Middle-earth series, there’s always the risk that it could prove to be too big of a change for those already loyal to the franchise. For new players it shouldn’t be an issue, but if there’s a whole new learning curve for those who have already pumped hours of gameplay into Middle-earth, it could prove to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be available on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro and Project Scorpio starting August 25, 2017.
