First Look: Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2

For months there was speculation as to which character Mickey Rourke would play in Iron Man 2. Since it was revealed that the character would be Russian, fans of the comic (myself included) speculated that he would play an armored nemesis of our favorite armored Avenger – either Titanium Man or The Crimson Dynamo. So when word came that Whiplash would be in the film, people thought maybe Sam Rockwell would play that character and we’d have a double-villain scenario.
Well we still have a double-villain thing happening in Iron Man 2: Rockwell will play business rival Justin Hammer and Rourke will definitely be playing the super-villain Whiplash, albeit as a Russian character – and we’ve got the first look at Mickey Rourke in full Whiplash gear for you right here thanks to AdvancedIron.org!

This looks like the Whiplash version of the Mark I Iron Man armor – very raw, just the basic components. Based on what Rourke is wearing I’d say this is probably the first time he’s donned the weaponry and I’ll bet that later on in the film, financed by Justin Hammer, he’ll have a protective suit as cool as Tony Stark’s armor.
So what do you think? Up to the standards of the the first film?

It looks like he’s wearing prison clothes, so I’m assuming yeah, this is probably the first time he gets his hands on the tech.

*POTENTIAL SPOILER-ISH THING-> Conjecturing story from comics*
This immediately reminded me of an early Iron Man arc in Tales of Suspense where Titanium Man challenged Iron Man to a duel to try and prove that the Soviet Union was more adept at creating mechanical suits for its soldiers. I’m guessing that it’s less a “two villain” scenario than one “boss” villain (Hammer) pitting his hyped up minion (Whiplash) against Iron Man as a challenge just as equally against Stark as against Iron Man.
Happy Hogan got to see some action in that arc… Favreau setting up some scenes for himself?

Looks like a pirate, but I like it. I have complete faith in Iron Man 2.

I got ya. I’m not close to hitting the panic button. Everything I’ve heard about this film has been good. Anyone know why they chose to not put the Thor intro-cameo into this film as originally planned?

Well, Favreau did drop this comment on Twitter on April 18th:
“Woke up sore from doing stunt work last night. I shoulda known it was coming when the stuntwoman said goodbye by saying ‘Take some Advil.’”
I sincerely hope that is a prototype from early in the film (which it probably is) because that looks seriously stupid.
The biggest enemy here seems like overlap.
Here’s hoping this is a film that stands well and truly on it’s own, away from the first film, but without undercutting future material.

I’m interested to see the SFX of the whips themselves. Will they be bendable “lightsaber” type technology or electric enhanced chains?

I too hope so. Though it’s not that stupid for me, I think it’s not that great right now.
Hmm, well. I’m neutral really. But even though it’s not a very recognizable villain name, I’m sure it will be cool regardless considering who’s playing the character.

It wouldnt make sense for him to a have a fully developed SuperCool suit.
It looks like he either built it in prison or somebody is using him to test the prototype.
Not bad, alittle funny looking, but not bad for a prototype using stolen Stark Industry tech. Betting/Hoping CGI will be added. Hope IM2 is also not cheesy.
I think Mickey Rourke is well suited for this part…snicker:-p

That would be cool if they are doing the progression of armor/weapons thing like with Stark, but hopefully not as in depth, want to see more of Iron Man kicking random bad guy ass. But it’ll make it more realistic and make the villain seem bigger if he appears for more than just one fight like Iron Monger did in the first Iron Man, lol.
