Mickey Rourke really has been riding the comeback trail lately and it seems that along the way the former 80s heartthrob has been picking up some very interesting parts in some big, big movies.

The latest role that Rourke has attached himself to is that of the villain, King Hyperion, in Tarsem Singh’s Greek epic War of the Gods.

During the weekend we brought you news that Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto and one time Bond/ Batman/ Superman hopeful Henry Cavill (The Tudors) would be starring the film, which was written by Christian Gudegast and Jason Keller.

“(The story) follows a young warrior Theseus who leads his men into battle with the immortal Greek gods to defeat evil and the powerful elder gods of the Titans in order to save mankind. Pinto will portray Phaedra, an oracle priestess who must join Theseus — played by Henry Cavill (”The Tudors”) — on his quest to prevent the cataclysmic war from erupting.”

Since his Oscar nomination last year for Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, Rourke has attached himself to a slew of high profile projects including Iron Man 2, Conan, Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables and Passion Play with Megan Fox and Bill Murray. The Sin City star will also appear in 13 alongside Expendables co-star Jason Statham and he is set to reteam with his Johnny Handsome director Walter Hill for St Vincent.

If you are a recent fan of Mickey Rourke and his work, then I’d advise you to watch Diner, Angel Heart and Michael Cimino’s Desperate Hours for a brief overview of his range. Then check out anything that he did in the 80s – after that, proceed with caution!

War of the Gods is produced by Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton who brought 300 to the screen starts shooting next month.
