You know… for a sequel based on a movie that was a surprising monster success, Iron Man 2 certainly seems to stumbling quite a bit.
First came word that Terrence Howard was out of Iron Man 2, then despite the fact that last October Samuel L. Jackson stated that Nick Fury would have a larger role in the sequel, salary negotions between Jackson and Marvel Studios fell apart and it looks right now like he is Nick Fury no more.
Now comes word that Mickey Rourke, who was slated to play either Crimson Dynamo or Whiplash in the film, may not be in it either.
According to NY Mag, Rourke made it plain that he is not involved with the sequel:
“Right now, we’re not doing ‘Iron Man 2.’”
Now pay close attention: He said that he’s not doing Iron Man 2 right now. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not going to do it, just that he’s not signed up/involved at the moment.
With a Golden Globe win, the Oscars only days away and a lowball offer of $250,000 to appear in the film, this could very well be a comment thrown out in the middle of still ongoing negotiations. He could very well be hoping to snag an Oscar for his role in The Wrestler. An Oscar winner can no doubt demand more for an appearance in a film than an Oscar nominee.
For a sequel that should have been a no-brainer, Iron Man 2 certainly seems to be traveling down a rocky road.

Ok, so I overlooked the ‘right now’ part when originally reading about this. So there is still hope.
Its just contract negotiations but if he loses the Oscar he shouldnt be paid more money.
At this point, I’m willing to bet that IRON MAN 2′s release date gets pushed back later into Summer 2010.
I just want an awesome Iron Man 2! And I don’t want a Sam Jackson-less Nick Fury.
heath
I am with Heath on this. Sam Jackson must be brought back to the fold.
Can everyone please bombard Marvel.com with emails……….. to stop being such tight ass’s. Pleeeeeeeeeeeease
OK … seriously, is Rourke the be-all, end-all to a successful Ironman 2?
I think not. Congrats to him if he wins an Oscar … if he wants more money and Marvel is willing to pay him, fine. If he wants more money and Marvel isn’t willing, fine. Find someone else who will accept the offer.
And even though I am on Samuel Jackson overload at the theaters I would like to see him continue in the role of Fury.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Ironman 2 plays out. IMHO, Marvel doing a sad job with press and has to know that this franchise in the present time is Marvel’s main cash cow so why let so much negitive press get behind there name because of salary negotions?
Rourke would be a nice addition, but in no way is he a crucial one. Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Whiplash, you can get a lot of brutes to play those Roles. Vinnie Jones comes to mind…
@ppnkof
Totally agree.
Vic
Gotta agree with most people who think that Rourke can be replaced. I’m SURE they could find a replacement for his character. In fact, I don’t care if Sam Jackson is Nick Fury. It would be nice, but they can recast him, too. I’m still not sold on Cheadle as Rhodey. He just doesn’t LOOK the part. To me it feels like putting in Chris Rock as Rhodey…NO.
That being said, I trust Favs to make a great sequel. I’m just worried that Marvel is starting to nickel and dime everything.
Marvel is not going to be happy until they screw up everything about iron man
Not that I dont like Sam but why did are they going with the black Nick Fury and not the White old school one and why did they change him anyway? I have nothing against black people so lets not make this a racial issue but I just hate it when they change characters on me. I’m 29 and I loved the old school Nick Fury cause had that bad ass crasy white guy look that you couldnt confuse him. When they changed him I honestly thought it was Bishop.
@Frank
In the Ultimates version of the Marvel universe Nick Fury is black and was modeled after Sam Jackson.
Vic
Samuel L. Jackson is a horrible actor anyway and I don’t want him in the movie.
Iron Man 2 is shaping up to have a stellar cast; plus John Favreau tends to do a great job in any case
