Mickey Rourke In Talks For Tony Scott’s ‘Hell’s Angels’

Published 4 years ago by , Updated June 27th, 2013 at 3:10 pm,

Last month we reported on the news that Mickey Rourke may be teaming up with director Tony Scott for a crime-drama entitled Potsdamer Platz, possibly alongside Jason Statham and Javier Bardem. But now news has surfaced that Rourke may be teaming up with Scott not just for Platz, but another project entitled Hell’s Angels.

Deadline reports the news that Rourke and Scott are in talks for the Iron Man 2 star to play Sonny Barger, the real-life tough guy who helped transform the Hells Angels motorcycle gang into a nationwide organization. The rights to Barger’s memoir was sold over a decade ago, but it’s only now that the project is starting up again over at Fox 2000.

The studio has brought on Scott Frank (Minority Report) to do a heavy rewrite on the Hell’s Angels script that is being described as a “Donnie Brasco-like drama.” Not only would it be about Barger experiences within the titular motorcycle gang, but also would feature a young cop who infiltrates the gang in order to investigate possible criminal activities.

Who would play that young cop? Well, there are no prizes for guessing that Shia LaBeouf’s name has been brought up (according to Deadline, Scott has met with him already), but no deals have been closed for any actors (including Rourke) as of yet. But apparently the role is, “so perfectly tailored for Rourke that is is hard to imagine another actor who could more convincingly play a character who wears the hard miles and brawn of a grizzled biker gang veteran.”

Mickey Rourke Rumble Fish Mickey Rourke In Talks For Tony Scotts Hells Angels

Mickey Rourke as "The Motorcycle Boy" in Rumble Fish

I don’t think we need anyone to tell us that – we can get that vibe just looking at Rourke! (Let’s not forget his role in Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumble Fish, pictured above, where he played a character called “The Motorcycle Boy”). With his role in Iron Man 2 and the upcoming action-fest The Expendables continuing his comeback, Rourke is in top-form right now and is here to stay. Personally, I couldn’t be happier about that.

As far as the other Scott/Rourke project, Potsdamer Platz, it appears Rourke, Statham and Bardem are stilling circling the project as was reported last time. But still no deals have been confirmed with any of the three actors.

Just as a reminder, Potsdamer Platz (which is the name of a busy German commerce center) is about two soldiers in a New-Jersey based crime family who attempt to expand things internationally.

Would you like to see Mickey Rourke play a biker in Hell’s Angels? And would you like to see Shia LaBeouf star as the young cop?

  1. I would love for Mick to star as Sonny. They have been friends for like 30 years. So he will nail this role. As far as Shia playing the cop, i think that would be cool. He can learn alot from Rourke.

    • Mickey Rourke as Sony Barger would be casting made in heaven … er, maybe thats not the right word. I would say that if they cast anyone other than Rourke as the lead Hells Angel they should be drawn and quartered and tossed onto the road to be flattened by Harleys. Anyone they put in there to play off of Mickey better have some acting chops or they’ll be blown off the screen.

    • if you know anything about sonny barger you know sean penn is the only guy who could pull this off. he is sonnts size and his acting is by far the best in hollywood. if tony scott doesnt take a look at penn he will be sadly making a big mistake. this is a movie that has to be done right and sean can deliver a home run here hands down.
i love mickey’s work he is one of my all time favs but as sonny its just wrong but i would love to see him play 1 of the other hells angel roles since there will be many parts.
if you see younger photos of sonny you will see how sean penn could capture the flavor

      • You gotta be kidding. Sean Penn is a wonderful actor but you don’t send a boy to do a man’s job. I’m sure Penn would have a good laugh about someone saying he would be better at playing Sonny Barger than Rourke – its ridiculous. It doesn’t even matter that Mickey and Sonny were friends in real life and that he spent a lot of time hanging out with the Angels – its just that he has the edge and depth and experience to make that part into something poetic – the way that only Mickey Rourke can do.

    • I don’t see this movie Selling.America has got past the hells angels angels. The hells angels chicken head looking dead head is just a Joke The hells angels image has been seen through with all the coward hells angels in the club waring against Women and children. Seems like reading about hells angels and child pornography or in some way harming raping molesting and murdering women and children has become something we are all use to reading in the paper. I think some fool trying to make this type of behavior heroic would just be Bad for America and Bad for all that is decent and true.

We all know that little 666 the freaks wear probably just shows how many men they ate on their journey to becoming a hells angels. Sounds like A crappy movie

  2. oh and i encourage yall to watch Rumble Fish. Rourke is the king of cool in it.

  3. I wouldn’t mind seeing some kind of film made of Hunter S Thompson’s Hell’s Angels, with Barger still in his twenties. Rourke’s a good choice for an older version, though. Just as long as Tony Scott doesn’t use the same ludicrous ADHD style as he went with on Domino, which was like being continually tasered in the family jewels for two hours. And not in a good way.

  4. Damn I use to get Mickey Rourke and that guy from the Iron Man 2 that plays Whiplash confused…..– oh wait! lol

Damn he use to look different then he does now! Sheesh. Crack is a heavy drug!! LOL Quoting the late Rick James of course. Well, I’m glad to see more of Mickey Rourke though, he’s a unique actor, and appeal to his sensibilities too! The fact that he loves animals so much certainly connects with me as well! GO MICKEY!!! lol

    • Careful… if you “lol” too much you might hurst yourself.

      • LOL

  5. I once lived directly across the street from The Outlaws motorcycle gang… our neighbourhood was surprsingly safe as long as you “mind your own f*!@#%$ business.” The day the cops raided the club house and hauled them off to jail the B&Es started the next day cleaning out a few people completely. Rough bunch but they kept other criminal activity at bay…. for awhile. I drove a 70cc scooter at the time and they’d all hoot and holler whenever I rounded the corner. They seemed to get a kick out of the nerd next door.

  6. mickey rourke is hung like a horse

  7. You know what? I love Tony Scott’s films, he’s toned down the hyper ADDness now too. He’s one of the few ‘manly men movie’ directors left.

But please no Shia Laboof, I’d much rather Chris Pine if they’re going for a young guy, otherwise go someone older.

  8. Mickey is an incredible actor. One performance better then the next. he really makes the other actors look mediocre. This would be an incredible role for him. Glad to see he’s hot again.

  9. If you make the film……Just do it right.

  10. Why would Micky Rourke want to take on a roll like playing a Hells Angel? Hells Angels are lowlifes!

You know I used to never really have too much of a problem with Hells Angels fighting with other biker gangs and stuff like that we always hear about, I figure people that get into these gangs know what can happen.

However lately I’ve heard about Hells Angels in California fighting with, beating up and even killing Mongols. This is so sad to me. Why pick on Mongols? Don’t they seem like easy targets for these “big tough” motorcycle guys?
I’ve always kind of liked Mongols, they seem so friendly and nice when cleaning the tables at Burger King or bagging groceries. Sure they can be a little irritating at times, they try to take my french fry box before I’m done and they have mopped my shoes a couple times, but not a big enough deal to go to war with them like the stupid Hells Angels have.

But from what I understand the Mongols have formed their own gang and are riding motorcycles too??? Is this legal? Do they have drivers licenses? Is that safe? I’m more than a little concerned thinking about a group of them riding motorcycles together.

Also does anyone know if Corky from the show “Life Goes On” is part of that gang? I’m sure he’s in California, but I sure hope he’s not part of this gang. If he is – then Hells Angels leave him alone even if he is a mongol, he’s a good guy so don’t attack him!

Maybe somebody know what happened to Corky, please respond if you do. I hope he’s not getting attacked by Hells Angels!

    • You are a Fool. Hells angels in the USA are known for their large Percent of members in the newspapers for harming raping molesting and murdering women and children.

Everyone knows Hells angels cannot fight. Sonny every USA hells angels in the USA are just cowards and punks that hide in a flock with other freaks and pretend they were tough these freaks have never been in real fights without the other freaks and cowards in their goofy gang jumping in. Only fools believe these gang banging out of shape cowards are men.

      • I don’t see this movie Selling.America has got past the hells angels angels. 11. last cowboy was a great movie . Some people have told me I am as ugly as Mickey is that a good thing? Yo Mickey don’t do it. You already got ripped letting a punk Mooch train you. You could have been a contender if you had a real trainer train you instead of the fake ass non fighting gang freak. Notice that punks lack of career yet he has the avenue just to chicken s*** to take it I guess. Yo you tried he hid.stay away from that stay strait .

    • I don’t see what would be wrong about doing a movie about a cop infiltrating the Hells Angels – especially if Rourke is one of the leads. They do movies about the mafia and about the Nazis, neither of which are good guys – to say the least. Just because a group is the subject of a movie doesn’t mean they’re being glorified. Its up to the filmmaker to strike the right balance.

  12. Why would Micky Rourke want to take on a roll like playing a Hells Angel? Hells Angels are lowlifes!

You know I used to never really have too much of a problem with Hells Angels fighting with other biker gangs but if you read the newspapers you will always see hells angels harming raping molesting and murdering women and children and hells angels supporting child porn seems to be a big hells angel priority here in the USA.

Is Child pornography the #1 money maker for the hells angels in the USA ?

    • Once again, they do movies about the mafia and thats a group that has done everything imaginable – so why not the Hells Angels? I can see you have a personal distaste for the Angels, and I can understand that – but that doesn’t mean that, like the mafia, you can’t make a good movie from the subject. If Rourke is in the film I’m going to go see it, whether its about the Angels or the cub scouts.

  13. I think Mickey would be perfect for this film. The guy above might be right with Penn as Barger though. Barger and Rourke arent the same size at all, but Penn is. Rourke would be better at portraying the hardened biker, but it would be cool to have Penn playing a badass hells angel as well. They should both definitly be in this film, and Shia would be great as the rookie cop trying to infiltrate. He’d have to bulk up though. Maybe they’ll make Megan Fox his “oldlady” in it. Wouldnt that be something.

  14. Mickey Rourke playing the God of the hells angels would be a perfect part for Mickey. Mickey Rourke’s real fighter training would be perfect the scenes with Mickey slapping around Sonny barger and the rest of the hells angels that talked out of place at meetings or Mickey beating on hells angels that broke the gangs rules.

Mickey Rourke has Muscles like Mike Yevtuck but Mickey is alot taller. Mike Yevtuck is just a little taller then Sonny barger.

Sonny barger was alwas a short frail man I don’t think they make acxtors that wimpy looking to play barger

  16. This looks like old news, is the movie going to happen? If so, I agree with an earlier comment that M.R. is perfect for S.B. in his later years. We need another cool cat for the early years – any ideas? I don’t like the young cop angle — and would better enjoy a more reality based movie taken from one of S.B.’s books.

  17. I think Rourke would be perfect! He has the vibe down to play Sonny…alpha male, he should have prospected!
