About a month ago, the exciting news broke that Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell would be joining the Iron Man 2 cast as villains.
Rourke, gleaming in the spotlight from his performance in The Wrestler, was rumored to be playing either Crimson Dynamo or Whiplash but it was a little unclear as to which. Most reports, including this from Variety, clearly pointed to one over the other:

“Rourke is in discussions to play a villain described as Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit.”
From that description and the rumors, it seemed pretty clear that the villain would be the Crimson Dynamo. Now it turns out that Rourke will not be playing the Crimson Dynamo. At least, according to what Robert Downey Jr. has to say about it.
In an interview on the set of Sherlock Holmes, MTV got chance to sit down with the man who plays Tony Stark and throw a few questions at him.
When asked if Mickey Rourke would be playing Russian nemesis Crimson Dynamo, Downey rebutted with
“That’s actually incorrect”
Okay. Next obvious question: Would Rourke then be playing Whiplash? Downey’s response:
“I can neither confirm nor deny that… Or maybe it’s some semblance of both. Here, I can tell you everything about the story except I won’t give away the ending. The nerd stuff is top-drawer security.”
I’m not quite sure what that means but I think I’d prefer one or the other. Either way, we now know that Rourke will not be the Crimson Dynamo. In the interview, Downey also goes on to say the following about the story of the sequel:
“It’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man; it’s another to hold that responsibility… If that sounds like a familiar theme, trust me, it’s not. This film is three times more fun and strange. We’re going real far out this time. It’s going to be good. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
Nothing but positivity from the leading man which is expected but still nice to hear.
You can check out the interview here.
We must point out that Rourke has yet to sign for the movie. The last we heard was that Marvel was low-balling him with a $250,000 offer. This caused quite a stir in the online community as it came out not long after news that Samuel L. Jackson was being undercut and of course the big replacement of Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle which also had major contract implications.
What do you think of what Robert Downey Jr. had to say about Rourke’s character in Iron Man 2?
Iron Man 2 starts shooting this spring and is set to hit theaters on May 7th 2010.

Man… I *hate* it when I’m wrong.

Titanium Man???
Please no Whiplash always hated the character, Living Laser (Lame), Freak (No that’s Happy Hogan), Super Adaptoid (could be cool)
If they had any Noots the Villian would be the Manderin and cast either Andy Lau or Tony Leung in the role. Both speak near perfect English and happen to be the biggest stars in the world to 2/3 of the planet. Personally I’m an Andy Lau mark and one of the few who prefered Three Kingdoms to Red Cliff
I think they’re saving Mandarin for the third film.
Vic
I am not surprised by this .
At least Rourke is apparently still in it,
Or still on track to be in it.
Whiplash… let’s hope that’s not the case… just read up on some of this character’s descriptions… I’ll stay quiet with anymore comments on this matter for now…
Maybe he won’t be any of those recognized villains but will be a new villain loosely inspired by a comic book villain. Remember, they are trying for a more realistic approach to this, maybe Crimson Dynamo had something about him that wouldn’t fit in their idea of the IM universe and had to change the character, but so much so that they felt they cannot name him the same. Not to mention, who the heck would really call themselves Crimson Dynamo?? That’s something you can get away with in a comic book, but who in the real world would not find that really campy or corny??
Although I am not very farmiliar with the Ultimate Universe, could he be playing Marc Scott? He is a rival Arms dealer (his company is called Whiplash) that competes with Stark for military contracts. Only thing is I dont know exactly where he is from, so I am not sure he is russian.
@Ken J
I would be surprised if they tried to meld villains/characters for the second film. With many of the same creative minds at work, all of whom did a good job of trying to stay faithful to the source material, I’d find that an odd move.
Although Favreau is back to direct I really don’t know what to expect with the sequel. Remember, we have a completely different writer on this one, not the same guys who wrote the first one. And this guy’s claim to fame is Tropic Thunder.
I’ll be keeping a close watch on development of this one, folks.
Vic
Wasnt Tropic Thunder a good movie?
There simply needs to be a way to bring Rourke in to the fold one way or another. If not as Crimson Dynamo, then Whiplash or any other character that is befitting an actor of Mickey’s stature. He needs to be on board, that much is clear.

@Oscar
Yes, Tropic Thunder was great but it’s a COMPLETELY different genre of movie.

Yah, I’m not sure if I would want the writers of one of the funniest films I’ve seen in 2008 to write IM2. But I do have to say, they achieved the humor in a very creative and CLEVER way, and that’s what set it apart from the other comedies. So perhaps they are capable of applying those brains for something more serious. So I’m cautiously hopeful about IM2.
Of course, it’s Titanium Man! Russian counterpart, monster armor, large guy like Rourke, the action figure has already been released (check it out!) and hey, Whiplash is totally lame…!
You guys are so wron. print a retraction
@Ryan Bell
Where exactly, in the above article are we “so wrong?” Also note that this was written back in early February.
