A few months ago, Screen Rant reported that actor Michael Sheen was in talks to join the cast of Tron Legacy. Now, thanks to the magic of Twitter, we have confirmation that Sheen is indeed joining the cast of the long-awaited sequel.
In a tweet posted to the popular social networking site on July 29th, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed Sheen’s participation in the film. Sheen’s involvement in Tron Legacy (which debuted its first official footage at Comic-Con last week) marks the latest in a string of prominent roles, including parts in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, as well as The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

So far, we know that Tron Legacy takes place 25 years after the events of the original film and revolves around the character of Sam Flynn (played by Garrett Hedlund) who enters the computer world to learn what happened to his father, Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges).
It has been speculated that Michael Sheen is playing the villain in Tron Legacy, but we don’t know exactly what that means. Sheen himself has previously hinted that the character he is playing “isn’t a real person at all.”
It will be nice to see what Sheen brings to the production. His work in such prominent films as Frost/Nixon and The Queen has been highly acclaimed, and it is a fair bet that, given a good script, his presence in Tron Legacy could help elevate the film from a middling 3D action flick to something more.
In other Tron news, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s next project will be an original sci-fi action film called Oblivion. The project, which Kosinski has been looking to develop since moving to Hollywood four years ago, is being produced by Radical Pictures. According to the THR article,
“The story centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.”
Hmm…sounds delightfully apocalyptic. Anyway, what do you all you Tronnies (like Trekkies, but for Tron… or should that be Tronners?) think of this news? Are you more eager than ever to jump back into some awesome Disc Tournament action?
Tron Legacy will open in 2011.

Sheen is a really good actor so like the sound of this.
Wow, Michael Sheen is having a great year. I’d never heard of him until recently, but now I’ll pretty much watch anything he’s in.
Why does this guy look like the head Lycan from Underworld?
That’s because it is him.
He’s been in a fair few movies, mainly British ones, like the League of Gentlemen and the recent the Damned United. Oh, he was the local priest Orlando Bloom kills at the start of Kingdom of Heaven too. Not sure what else.
Oh, ok. I knew I had seen him before. I tried bringing up IMDB but it just took soo long. It finally came up and I saw that he was Lucian.
Lucian, that was it. Think he made it into all three movies and was the only person to do so. Maybe Bill Nighy too.
He did a nicely disintegrating Emperor Nero as well – I think he’d make the perfect Mad Hatter instead of Depp, in fact. Good news that he’s in this.
