Twilight fans rejoice! According to The Daily Mail Michael Sheen has been cast as Aro, the leader of the Volturi, an Italian vampire family in New Moon – the sequel to the smash hit movie. According to paper, the director of the film Chris Weitz “aggressively pursued” Sheen for the role saying:

“Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires. Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.”

In case you’ve been living in a cave and haven’t heard, the Twilight movies are based on a series of novels by Stephen King’s favorite author Stephanie Meyer – and this follow up will reunite original stars Robert Pattinson and and Kristen Stewart. Rumor has it that Pattinson is some sort of cross generational pin-up. I thought that I was the only one – welcome to the club Robert!

Sheen has made his name in recent years playing iconic British people such as former Prime Minister Tony Blair, football manager Brian Clough, the Carry On film’s Kenneth Williams and Sir David Frost in Frost/Nixon.

I suppose playing a politician is sort of like playing a vampire. Think about it.

Having not read the books means that I can’t say if Sheen is good casting, but I can only assume that he’s only interested in it because he could chew a lot of scenery. I also think that vampire Volturi is a meaty role for Sheen after playing “living” characters. I mean now he’s playing the undead. At the very least he’ll have something to sink his teeth into.

That and he’s getting £5 million. That’s sterling folks – not dollars.

All will be revealed when New Moon, the next installment of the Edward and Bella saga opens in November.
