smallville hawkman First Look: Michael Shanks as Hawkman in Smallville

TV Guide got themselves a nice little scoop on Nov 16th when they flaunted the first look at what Michael Shanks will look like as Hawkman on Smallville.  They also had the opportunity to chat with Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1) who will be playing Carter Hall aka Hawkman in an upcoming pair of episodes from Smallville.

The pair of episodes are now being drawn together into a single night of viewing and The CW Network is calling it a “movie” event.

We will be meeting the Justice Society in this movie and Shanks gave TV Guide some insight to the upcoming episodes and their first look at Shanks as Hawkman:

Admittedly, it looks a bit odd in the blue tint and doesn’t really give up too much except that he looks exactly like the classic Hawkman we’ve seen through the years:

The interview had some details that some may consider to be outline spoilers.  If you like being surprised by plot line, then there are a few things below that might be considered plot spoilers.

Onward:

  • Shanks said he is doing his own flying, controlled by big men with big arms in his fly-by-wire get up.
  • He won’t be bare chested, but will have a chest plate.  This will accommodate the FX harness for flying.
  • Carter Hall / Hawkman, who is a reincarnated prince from 1,000 years previous, comes off with a lot of cynicism and guilt about what he deems failures on his part from past events that involved the Justice Society.
  • The society has been around for some time and our own group of Smallville heroes are just hearing about them now…  which will be an interesting plot point in the movie.
  • There will be many references to other Society members throughout the movie.
  • Hall and Queen will be at odds over political views.

What caught my eye was the reference to how the Society was originally treated so poorly by the public that it causes a debate about whether the Justice League itself should even try to pick up the hero mantle as a group.

Interesting bits:  In addition to Hawkman, we’ll be seeing Dr. Fate, Stargirl, Martian Manhunter and Amanda Waller.  Plus, Tom Welling will be directing the 2nd hour.

It’s all good stuff giving us something to look forward to when this two-hour event featuring the Justice Society and penned by the ever illustrious Geoff Johns hits the air on February 5th, 2010.

I am looking forward to the unveiling of so many heroes in a single episode of Smallville.  To be honest, if feels like they’re pulling out all the stops for this 9th season to make sure they get a 10th.  And they just might, at the rate they’re going this year.

  1. Wow, looks pretty cheesy… Well, I stopped watching Smallville after like season 2 so…

  2. cant see it well, is it an actual suit or concept art ?
i hope doctor fate and manhunter come out good, those two are some of my fav DC characters

  3. Picture looks like concept art to me. Curious of how this will turn out because they must be desperate for ratings. I hope to see Impulse, Cyborg, Aquman, and Black Canary in the line up. Funny part is, will Clark being wearing his black costume or add alittle color to it? Otherwise he’d stick out like a sore thumb.

    @ Ken
You gonna watch? I wonder why politics will be involve between Queen and Carter Hall. I heard from friends That Green Arrow is a democrat while Batman is Republican and Superman is a illegal alien, lol. of-course thats a joke except on JLU Green Arrow does say he’s a old lefty. Anyways i wonder if this 2 hr movie will be in the boxset or on dvd by itself? I hope its good since Batman, Wonder Woman, GL arent part of the line up.

  4. @ jwalka

Martian Manhunter has been in smallville for 3 seasons now.

I’m disappointed with the name of the tv movie though, Smallville Absolute Justice.

Smallville has always had one word titles. Still looks amazing, has anyone seen the Pandora trailer, strange that the imagery is identical to The Death Of Superman! Why could they not have done that in Doomsday?

  5. @chris j

I’ve been out of the smallville loop way too long. I’ll be completely lost if I watched this. And I’m not really into comic books either, so even that won’t help me. Like right now, Hawkman, I have no clue who that is… lol

Well, right now he’s Daniel Jackson with a mask on and wings… :-P

  6. Hey Chris J, the Hawkman/Green Arrow rivalry has been going on for years in the comics. This really is just another instance of Geoff Johns beung true to the source material.

I hope they pull this off, I really feel that season 9 of Smallville has been a massive improvement on what has come before and I agree with other posts that the picture looks concept art or even CGI. Got us all talking though!

  7. I LOVE SMALLVILLE,IS VERY INTERESTING AND CLARK KENT,CHLEO THEY AER WONDERFUL.PLS I WISH TO CHAT AND SEND EMAILS TO THEM

  8. @Maureen

Have a bad morning? Why all the yelling? :)

  9. About the “image”:, this is a quote from the source: “A sneak peek at Michael Shanks in the Hawkman costume he dons for Smallville’s highly anticipated two-hour movie event. ”

It can be taken either way if this is a pic or concept. Either way, it’s fuzzy and odd at best to have such a questionably detailed image.

  10. I’m real excited for the 2 hour thingy. I just hope it lives up to the hype

  11. that looks terrible smallvile is terrible, i wonder if they ever put batman in the show how would he look like

  12. @ Mario Smallville isnt terrible, the fact that it has been on for nearly ten years atests to it not being terrible.

  13. Wait, wait, wait… it’s Michael Shanks from SG-1?!!

    Wow…

    Vic

  14. lmao ken you said it

  15. LOL – YEP, Dr. Daniel Jackson from STARGATE SG-1 is moonlighting as Hawkman on SMALLVILLE. Go figure. It doesn’t say much about where he’s headed with his overall career… but I could be wrong.

  16. The first thing I thought was “Michael Shanks from Doomsday arcade?”

And then after seeing the image I thought “Wow….that looks awful”

  17. mario, go jump on a walking mushroom

  18. He looks a bit ridiculous.

  19. The suit actually looks good. His body type just doesn’t fit.

  20. wow that looks so bad……

  21. The costume looks good but it would help if the actor were more ripped. Hawkman is insanely buff. I know it’s always a trade off between getting real actors or WWF wrestlers in superhero parts, but the ripped look is important to comic book properties. It is a visual medium. To be fair, it’s only a one week gig for most actors and they won’t buff out over that. If given a couple of months, like in a movie situation, I’m sure Michael Shanks and most actors would have the dedication to buff up.

  22. Kolchak, agreed, but i think for a TV show (especially one about superhero “early years”) I’ll be ok with him not too ripped. Though it would add to the character.

And of course he looks ridiculous. This is SMALLVILLE people. Since when have they not had cheesy costumes? lol (Although i really do like the Green Arrow costume)

  23. I can’t tell if this is actually Shanks in disguise or just a really good artist’s rendering of some sort. It looks great, either way, and I personally like to see the show staying so true to Hawkman. He’s a classic character all the way. I thought Smallville jumped the shark a year or so after John Schneider left the show but having watched the current season, they seem to have got a tight handle on matters and are putting out some of their best episodes.

  24. Well, the bit about superhero characters being “ripped” is true… and also untrue. They often tend to have muscle definition where none should exist on a human body. Some comic artists tend to overdo the whole musculature thing.

  25. Good point Mike. lol

  26. If Clark and the others should fight against Zod, they most have a plan to stop him before turns metropolis into he’s own planet, I think if hawkman, green lantern, The Flash, Batman and some one else from justice leauge could come to smallville so they can help Clark, Chloe and Oliver to fight against Zod and he’s army. And next year it’s mayby time for Clark to show the true color on he’s costume after all there will be a movie based on the tv show. Called Metropolis but the question is will Allison Mack, Tom Welling, Erica Durance and Justin Hartley be in the movie. ?

  27. Anon – that “Metropolis movie” theory is a myth. a no-go. A fabrication of hope!

  28. Did anyone see the green lanterns ring on the trailer after Pandora???

  29. Ok people check this out…

I’m pretty sure at 0:09 there is a Green Lantern ring
