michael rosenbaum lex luthor Michael Rosenbaum Will Return For Smallville Finale! [Updated]

Any speculation about Michael Rosenbaum’s involvement in the final season of Smallville can come to an end. It has been revealed that Rosenbaum officially turned down a guest starring role in the Smallville series finale [Update: Wrong! Rosenbaum IS returning for the Smallville finale! Details below]

From the first mention of Smallvilles final season, fans of the series have been making one continuous request, well, plea: bring Michael Rosenbaum back as Lex Luthor. Executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders have remained optimistic throughout and both Peterson and Souders had previously hinted that talks with Rosenbaum had been progressing.

Unfortunately, while it appears that Peterson and Souders have attempted numerous times at securing Michael Rosenbaum’s return to the series (including the Smallville season 10 premiere), the reality is that Rosenbaum has repeatedly dismissed their offer – as he wants to focus on other aspects of his career.

Entertainment Weekly cites a source that says:

“He has put the show behind him and moved on. He’s pursuing his other creative outlet [writing]. By all indications, he is not going to be involved.”

While I’m sure that this news will certainly upset boisterous fans, one can’t the deny the difficulties that Rosenbaum must face in his attempt to progress his career past Smallville. After seven years in the role of Lex Luthor, the notion of simply stepping into a new role can be incredibly difficult, if not impossible.

Rosenbaum’s interest in focusing on his creative writing might bemuse many but he has made some significant progress in that respect. With one series, Saved by Zeroes, still in development at Syfy and the upcoming release of his short film GHILD with David Yarovesky, Rosenbaum has showed that he has, in fact, been actively pursuing writing and not been simply sitting around doing nothing.

You can view the trailer for GHILD below:

Even though Rosenbaum has turned down the offer to return to Smallville, there is still some time left for him to change his mind. How much time, you ask? Around two weeks. After that, filming of the series finale will begin and the entire production of Smallville will be wrapped by the end of next month.

So, if Peterson and Souders have any tricks up their sleeves (or any extra money laying around), they still have time to make one final move at bringing Michael Rosenbaum back to the series. If for no other reason than to provide a realistic conclusion to the odd Tess Mercer/growing Lex Luthor plot line.

[Update: Perhaps in result to the Twitter rage against Rosenbaum not returning to Smallville, Ausiello has confirmed that Michael Rosenbaum will return as Lex Luthor for the Smallville series finale! Here’s what he had to say to TV Line]

“I’m delighted to return for the series finale. I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness, and even their threats. Ha ha… I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again. Oh, and for Lex to become the bad-ass he’s destined to be.”

There you have it. Fans get what they wanted and Smallville can end on the highest note possible! We applaud Rosenbaum’s appreciation of the fans. (Special shout out to @EthanMyers007 on Twitter for alerting us to this.)

  1. Oh my… there are some apologizes due from some very nasty-mouthed commenters here… 8)

    • Or maybe the uproar made him change his mind…

      • That is a possibility as well. :)

        • It’s also possible that they wanted to keep it a surprise, but with all the uproar and people getting their under-roos all in a bunch, Rosenbaum had to spill the beans, or else fear someone might pelt him with eggs, and then burn his house down or something.

    • I agree Vic. Haha

    • Agreed. yesterday I said (on another site) that truly great actors pay homage to their roots. I think I pointed out that even Terri Hatcher did a cameo on Smallville as a love note to the fans for her start in Lois and Clark and she certainly doesn’t need the money or exposure of Smallville. Thats class and I think I intimated that MR didn’t have any. Therefore, Mr. Rosenbaum, wherever you are, I take it all back, thank you for agreeing to appear. I now know it will be a great finale. I am now your fan for life.

  2. Simply awesome :D

  3. :D :D :D :D :D

    • I’m not sure if you liked this news or not. :-D

  4. All the geeks can now rejoice!!! :)

  5. I am so ****ing excited. I’m sorry for nasty talk, but I think this calls for it!!!

Literally just a few hours ago I was sad. Now I am dancing around like a teenage girl in an 80′s movie!!!!!!!!!

  6. Thats a very artful not to mention quick change of headline.

  7. This really got me excited to watch the show now. I’ve been a long time fan of Smallville – mainly because I needed some Superman in my life. Now that it seems everything I wanted for the reboot is actually happening Smallville is starting to annoy me for the first time ever. o_O But this news has completely rebooted my interest in this show! Can’t wait to watch the finale. Now I can say it will definitely be EPIC!

  8. So glad the genius came to his senses, Really… I can’t believe it even took him this long to say he was coming back. Better do it for the fans, cause if you don’t you know they would abandon you in a drop of a hat.

  9. What would have been even better would have been to continue insisting he wouldn’t return, no credits in the show and then… Lex… cut to black!

    • I was hoping they’d keep it a secret, but people were getting violent. Haha

    • Now THAT would have had a hell of an impact. I’m sure it would have leaked somehow, though.

  10. This is great. I was kinda pissed at first when Michael seemed like he was better than this show, but now I retain my original view and say that he’s a cool guy. The missing piece to a perfect final season has just been found.

  11. If he doesnt want to come back that means He thinks he is better then the show?
I am glad he is coming back,
But he had every right to say no.

    • Having the right and thinking you are better are two different things. And maybe he didnt think he was too good for the show, but I’m sure thats how a lot of people felt. I mean if I acted on a show that gave me most of my popularity and enjoyed it I would probably be thrilled to return for at least a cameo in its final season.

  12. YES!!! Good times!

  13. Question
Will he portray original lex or clone lex.

    • It will be the clone if you watched you could tell that they giving lex a role with hair. the clone with hair has a style that just like what rosenbam wheres his hair.

      • Why not both?

  14. Ok, now I feel like a douche. I said some unpleasant things about him yesterday. I take them all back!

    • lol same here

      • From what I heard there was a twitter backlash, which he certainly would have seen. He also said something like he hoped fans would watch his new work now he was doing this.
I think he realised all of his fans, are Smallville fans. But the right choice was made, he’ll get a huge payday and fan respect for life, we get the best ever Lex Luthor back one last time.
        Everyones a winner.

        • He really shouldn’t even put a price tag on the appearance though Sam.

          • I agree. But I’m happy he’s coming back. Should be one hell of a finale!

    • For all of you doubters out there, I’m coming for you! I have just created a cyborg strong enough to kill that alien boy scout, and I am going to unleash him on Screen Rant! Prepare for your day of destruction!!! And also remember to invest in LexCorp and its new branch of Real Estate Acquisitions. :-P

  15. Would be cool if they put him back in the title sequence.

    • I agree, that would be cool. I wonder if that was part of the deal to secure his return? I just read that Greg Beeman (director of season 9 finale “Salvation”) is coming back to direct the final episode. This episode just keeps looking better and better in my opinion.

      • I heard that they were only allowed to put people on the title sequnece if they appeared in a certain ammount of episodes in that paticular season, that’s why Justin Hartley wasnt added in season 6.

Personally, I’d like it if they found a way to include everyone that had been on the show, even if they are not actually in the episode.

        • There are two different versions of the opening title sequence this year. One with Allison Mack and one without. I’m assuming that was part of the deal with securing her return since I read an article during the break between seasons where one of the executive producers was quoted as saying the opening titles were expensive to alter and they’d rather spend that money on the episodes themselves (sorry, don’t have a link). I’d love to see Michael included in the credits but if it’s at the expense of the episode content I’d rather see the money spent towards an all out, top quality, series finale.

Also, I agree that it would be nice to see past characters included as a nod to the series history. But I’d be VERY surprised if that were to happen.

  16. FANTASTIC NEWS!!! So excited! Can’t wait! What an event the finale will be for all us fans, it will definitely be an epic nite of television. Maybe the highest rated show of the year??? lol hope so! Thank you Michael!

  17. If this is true then it is the second really good sign – after the decision to make the finale 2hours – that Smallville’s end will be the monumental event in television that we all expect it to be.

I had a sneaky suspicion that he was always going to come back, just wish he would’ve come in for a few more episodes. Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t have felt right if Rosenbaum didn’t appear at all in the final season.

Now hurry up E4 and start showing season 10 in the UK already!!!!

    • Just download it. I do, have done since season 7.

  18. I’m so proud of Michael right now. He could have taken the selfish way out but instead he decided to suck it up and do the right thing. In the end he respected the fans who have supported him over the years and I for one appreciate that very much.

  19. This is great news! Let’s just hope that Kristin Kreuk DOESN’T come back!

    • Don’t even put that thought in the producers minds! ;-)

  20. Here is my dream scenario.
The Lex clone “Assists” Clark in taking down Darkseid
He reassumes control of his company and then the original Lex comes back and kills the clone.

  21. I do think that Rosenbaums statement of doing it “For the fans” is more then a bit disengenous.
If he wanted to do it just for the fans then there is no reason to negotiate his return now is there ?
    Dont get me wrong.
I hope they paid him more money then the CW has ever paid anyone,
But about two weeks ago he was saying he hasent taled fthem for a long time.
Now we find out he has been in negotiation for two weeks .
He doesnt have to say it was for the money, but if it was for the fans then he would have returned earlier.

  22. I was hoping that the original Lex would somehow appear, not a clone. I remember watching the 1st episode of the 10th season, when Clark was technically dead and in that corn field. Before he was called back to the land of the living, he saw Lex walking through as well. Doesn’t this mean that Lex (maybe) isn’t really dead (somehow hovering between life and death – coma). If the Lex clone is somehow losing his memories, maybe Lionel or someone close to Lex will implant the originals brain into the clone’s body like in the comic books.
Either way, I’m glad Rosenbaum is coming back. I actually liked Smallville. I got a kick out of seeing the characters I read about coming alive.

  23. You don’t think they’ll follow the comic book story (with the brain transplant). Maybe Oliver killed a clone instead of the original Lex

  24. YES, finally, michael rosenbaum is coming back!

  25. Its all based on comic books.
There are TONS of different ways they can bring the real Lex back if they want to.

  26. This news just made my day. While I respected his decision yesterday it was a little disappoint but I wake up this morning to some excellent news. Good to have you back Mr. Rosenbaum.

  27. WOW!!! Just liked i suspected – I knew he was going to come back! after
watching smallville yesterday nite with the young LEX Luthor, Micheal Rosenbaum Thank You so much!

  28. @Sam Beckett

Call me old fashioned but I’m not a great advocate of downloading, particularly a tv series. I like that anticipation each week for an episode. Plus I enjoy watching the show in HD. I avoid the episode reviews on here but always look at general news on this show.

I for one would more than love to see Kirsten Kreuk. She is still so stunningly beautiful. Yes Erica is hot and Allison is goregous but Kirsten has always been the most attractive lead actress on the show, though I’d obviously take both Laura Vandervoort and Kelly Brook into consideration when they were on the show..

    • Well, frankly I couldn’t ‘anticipate’ waiting for nearly a year later than it is on in the UK. E4 also put advert breaks in stupid places and cut sentences of halfway.
I download the episode a few hours after it’s shown in the US, and then I will buy the DVD when it comes out as I have done every year.
Knowing how much of a fan you are, how can you handle it? We’ll have seen the finale before you’ve seen the season premiere…

      • I’m with you DrSam. I live in yhe UK & If I couldn’t download it I think I’d go crazy. I don’t even have Sky tv so id have to wait for it to show up on plain old Channel 4 & they’ve never been very consistent when it comes to screening Smallville.
Don’t know what I’m going to do when it finally finishes:-(

        • As great as the series finale will be, I too will be at a loss when it’s finished. I suspect there will be tears,
